Re: [Trisquel-users] Good free website hosting
I've seen such detached re: posts before. Besides operator error it could be a bug in the software, who knows.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Good free website hosting
Actually, a Wiki could work very well. Thank you for the suggestion, I'm definitely going to try ShoutWiki out!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Good free website hosting
I took a look at it, but it seemed like it targets users who know what they are doing with technology. Also, SSH keys and git? While Red Hat is a great company I like and respect, I will probably look into simpler solutions here. But thank you for suggestion! :)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Karaoke simple game or app
To answer my own questions: http://usdb.animux.de/ has a lot of lyrics ready to be used in game. But you need to get the mp3/ogg file yourself. Either rip from a CD or buy the song online and use it. Sometimes you might get a different timing and it won't work, but most of the songs actually are working properly. Like most free software, it works very well, but you have to do a lot of leg work yourself. Also, the game doesn't seem to be updated for one or two years now, I wonder if they have given up on it. Also, Debian reps have version 0.6.1 still. I wonder if Trisquel has version 0.7 already?? Also, if anyone has ever tried it, do you get to hear your own voice when you sing? I can hear the songs playing, and the game gets my voice, even giving me the score, but the mic sound is not played over the speakers. wtf??
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel Enhancement Project reaches version 0.1 alpha milestone
Outstanding mYself, your effort is impresive to say the least. ¿Do you allow me to add a good free programs to your wiki? I would want to add The mana world an other good programs.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel Enhancement Project reaches version 0.1 alpha milestone
Google Translate: I only speak Spanish, but, as I understand, is a database with the information necessary to install many useful programs that are not yet in the repositories. I thank you, it has helped me a lot, just today. In its current state, yes. However, this is expected to be just a documentation part of a bigger whole. While Trisquel 6.0 was planned to have a community-backports repository, this was actually never happened so this should be seen as a compensation of some kind.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel Enhancement Project reaches version 0.1 alpha milestone
I approve! ;-) Just one quick question: How do you measure the progress of your project? As far as I understand it, it is just a documentation effort, which doesn't seem to be very measurable.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel Enhancement Project reaches version 0.1 alpha milestone
Thank you for the information about Popcorn Time. Since I'm subscribed to their mailing list, I expected to be notified about this new release. I tried to upgrade to 0.3.3 Beta but, according to this post, this requires a never version of glibc library which is not available in Trisquel 6.0. Since this doesn't affect the current stable version of Trisquel, I'm going to postpone this until Belenos gets released.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel Enhancement Project reaches version 0.1 alpha milestone
You're free to do so, however, please avoid contributing bloat of any kind as I would like to keep the list short and simple (it's not meant to be a comprehensive list of all free software games and programs - there's the Free Software Directory for that purpose). I'm very picky about what applications should be included and provided support for.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel Enhancement Project reaches version 0.1 alpha milestone
There are planned features and milestones, so the versioning tries to reflect this. It's not a strict documentation in its definition.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel Enhancement Project reaches version 0.1 alpha milestone
Acknowledged
[Trisquel-users] Re : Trisquel Enhancement Project reaches version 0.1 alpha milestone
I installed (well, unpacked the tar.xz archive) Popcorn Time Beta 3.3 on Trisquel 6. I took it from https://popcorntime.io and it works. No problem whatsoever.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel Enhancement Project reaches version 0.1 alpha milestone
Which version did you tried, the 32-bit or the 64-bit one?
[Trisquel-users] tp link free router, what is gained by that?
https://www.thinkpenguin.com/gnu-linux/free-software-wireless-n-broadband-router-gnu-linux-tpe-nwifirouter is a free router. It is a tp link tl wr841nd router that has librecmc http://www.librecmc.org/librecmc/wiki?name=TL-WR841ND installed. Thinkpenguin says, the router has to be v.8.2. I got told, that a router may be a combined router modem or just a router. Is the tp just a router? If that is the case, then what do you gain by using the librecmc tp router? There is no free modem?
Re: [Trisquel-users] tp link free router, what is gained by that?
It's just a router. The combined modems+routers, AFAIK, don't meet the FSF's Respects Your Freedom criteria. Obviously, we should also have free modems although I don't know anyone working on that. In the meantime, it's still good to use free software on the router so I'm not sure what you mean by asking what someone gains: They gain a 100% free software router. The modem remains unchanged but it doesn't have to change for us to gain the router. Hopefully things will change and we'll gain the modem too. In the meantime we've gained a router. :)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Adding a 3rd monitor?
Would trying Arandr (available in the repos I think) work?
Re: [Trisquel-users] tp link free router, what is gained by that?
From: svh...@gmail.com https://www.thinkpenguin.com/gnu-linux/free-software-wireless-n-broadband-router-gnu-linux-tpe-nwifirouter is a free router. As jxself says it's just an ethernet router. But for many types of broadband connection that is all you need e.g. many modern cable connections the ISP provides a modem and a separate ethernet router, the same with what's known as FTTP (Fibre To The Premises). As per the D-Link DSL-3780 thread here there are often security problems with cheaper 'consumer' grade broadband routers or router/modems. This is because the manufacturers build them at lowest cost and that includes skimping on the firmware. Maintenance on them is an expense and therefore is skipped or ignored also. So a router which uses a libre firmware distro is going to be more secure to start with. In particular AFAIK OpenWRT, the open source firmware distro which is LibreCMC's upstream, hasn't had a significant security problem in ages. Further as with all free software distros any security bugs are given priority attention which is often not what you'll get from a manufacturer. With router modems one of the reasons for there being no libre firmware is that it would need an expensive telecoms certification. It's the same with the modem code in Replicant phones - at present it's proprietary and even if someone wrote a replacement then the users freedoms aren't really there because if they changed the code and did their own build they would need to pay for certification to be legal. There are open source firmware distro supported ADSL modems which have blobs. These are still a better bet than a manufacturer's firmare build, because the security problems are usually in other parts of the firmware build. Just you still can't trust it completely and won't have all your freedoms. So I suggest you follow networking best practice which is to have an ethernet modem (this free software one) inside that. Leave the network zone in between to be your DMZ for Internet facing services and stuff for which there is no free software replacement as yet. Then put the free software computers and devices in your inner network. That's what I and a friend do.
Re: [Trisquel-users] US Patent Office Grants 'Photography Against A White Background' To Amazon
From: n...@blueyonder.co.uk Subject: Re: [Trisquel-users] US Patent Office Grants 'Photography Against A White Background' To Amazon Date: Fri, 3 Oct 2014 06:11:43 +0200 (CEST) If I remember correctly, abuot 8 or so years ago, someone in America applied for a patent to cover the act of putting food in the mouth, chewing and swallowing it - in order to hilight the absurdity and general brokenness of the US Patent system. Alas, as with so many Thanks, I didn't know. It was probably carefully chosen for its patentability. Mine was chosen for the humour. other areas of life - the Corporations are ruining it but are so rich and well connected they can buy politician's silence and complicity. The single biggest problem we face in the modern era is the concept of 'fiduciary duty'. If could get that redefined to include social responsibility, we'd have a chance, but whilst every business and organisation is mandated to act only in the interests of financial improvement, everything else gets trampled in the process. I'm not knowledgeable, wise or intelligent enough to work out what the key difficulties in a complex evolving human system like capitalism are. TBH I suspect nobody is, and even if there was someone and we had a definitive answer it would be exactly the same situation as climate change - there'd be those who claimed and campaigned otherwise in the face of what is proven and now obvious fact. However, I do know the answer to the problems, which as you're using Trisquel you know already - do something about what you believe. Personally for economic matters I favour the 'Think globally, act locally' approach which is applicable to many large problems. E.g. buy from ethical traders or fairtrade/ethical products and service where available. So in the UK make your supermarket the Cooperative. Work for or start an ethical business. And so on. Ghandi said something like 'You have to live the tomorrow you want today.' It takes surprisingly few people doing that to change things. Just a few can change a whole nation. Go watch the current film about the LGBT community helping out miners during the strike here in the UK. That was the seed of all the related legislative change in the UK since. As per Spain today, and the million who marched trying to stop Blair taking the UK into the Iraq War, you can have many more protest and change not happen.
[Trisquel-users] New entries on h-node.org
Now that Debian is included in the list of distros that can be used to test hardware, there are quite a few new notebooks tagged as A-platinum. I wonder how much we can count on the hardware being fully compatible with free software, since they were only tested on Debian Testing. I am particularly interested in this one: https://h-node.org/notebooks/view/en/1433/G750JX as it is readily available in the country where I live. I have another laptop with an Atheros 9485 so that can't be a problem, but I'm not sure about the NVidia GTX 770M. Any opinions or suggestions?
Re: [Trisquel-users] New entries on h-node.org
I wonder how much we can count on the hardware being fully compatible with free software, since they were only tested on Debian Testing. And I wonder if we can count on people not enabling non-free for their reports.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Adding a 3rd monitor?
Yes, it's in the repos. But it only detects my current displays. (=ignoring the second graphics card)
