Re: [Trisquel-users] LinuxVoice interview: Mir vs. Wayland

2014-10-18 Thread davidvargas1

the following article/ comment summarizes everything.

However, i also guess there were political considerations, in particular
Canonical feel they got burnt by Gnome. That relationship was unsatisfactory
in terms of realising their mobile ambitions and convergence goals.

NIH was undoubtedly a factor, along with other factors – technical,
political and commercial.

Also I understand that Gnome, KDE, and other relevant projects, would prefer
to cater for Wayland as the only new emerging display server, and not another
display server as well (Mir).

Ultimately it’s Canonical own money, and so they can do what they want. But
in fairness to them, they have lofty ambitions of convergence, and commercial
imperative to deliver their vision.

Good luck in that, canonical! be ready to compete and lose money with the
competition, your money is just pennies to the competition.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Toutatis Brightness control

2014-10-18 Thread santiago . lorente

Hi,

I have the same problem. Since I installed Trisquel on my laptop the
brightness is always high. I try to change it and see the icon responds but
not the brightness, it always stays high. I'm a beginner with GNU+Linux so I
have not really understood the technical explanations.

It would be nice an easy step-by-step guide to solve it. If it is anyway
possible...

Thanks!

The h node listing about graphic cards does not tell for sure that a card can
run on non free software?

Graphic cards listed on
http://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/CodeNames/#nv20family support 3d
acceleration and are able to run on free software? It may happen you install
one of the cards on hardware that makes the card run non free software? Same
situation if you install one of the cards on a computer that runs none free
software?

Because there is no desktop computer running only free software, it is
unlikely that a nouveau card will run on free software?

If ati releases more documentation than nvidia about their cards, then why do
nouveau make nvidia drivers?

 despite having nonfree VGA BIOS
Does the bios interact with the graphic card?

According to https://www.h-node.org :

The h-node project aims at the construction of a hardware database in order
to identify what devices work with a fully free operating system.

This definition excludes the BIOS/EFI.

Hey Jane! The first step would be to post the output of the lspci command.
Welcome to free operating systems btw!

In the GNOME Classic menu in 7.0, it is no longer possible to drag menu items
between folders using the menu editor. Not sure why it had to change.

A few of us put some info about this in the wiki:

I hope that we got it right. Please let us know if not.

The default desktop setup is garbage. If you want classic desktop, use
Cinnamon:
