Re: [Trisquel-users] Icecat 31.7.0
find the repo for IceCat Find what? Unless you've done something stupid with your sources list, it should be in the Trisquel repo. installing from source You didn't need to do that. is there an easy way to install? It's called apt-get. Just apt-get icecat (as root).
Re: [Trisquel-users] 'Abrowser' behaves strangely after a system update.
Am I the only person here not experiencing any strange issues with the latest Abrowser? It works perfectly for me. Haven't changed any settings since before the update. I don't even mind reader mode. I tried it out the first time, didn't really see the point (though it is a nice gimmick) and it has never popped up again. It's probably because I don't really use any of the addons- I kept my browser as vanilla as possible.
Re: [Trisquel-users] experience with Trisquel mini
i'm in gnome full trisquel now, but i can't find that user setting
Re: [Trisquel-users] New arrival
That's my battle plan.
Re: [Trisquel-users] New arrival
It's still about 2/3 cheaper than the average high-end Windows laptop with equivalent specs.
Re: [Trisquel-users] help me choose a configuration
* can't find the app that tracks processes so can't tell what is using cpu. i installed but can't rememeber what it is called and can't find it in the menus * after kernel upgrade and sudo apt-get upgrade-distro (or whatevre the correct syntax is) it now only does crazy cpu in response to some things, weirdly icecat triggers it but abrowser does not. * can someone please explain the little bash function on the kernel upgrade page? * there seems to be a grub problem, I have a grub menu on every reboot
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 7 feedback (with hardware details)
The best place for feedback concerning hardware is probably www.h-node.org. Welcome to freedom.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Decentralised server: BeagleBoneBlack as a mail server/other services? Your experience?
what server would fry? i am running these 2 servers with 512mb ram and 700mhz cpu: http://www.loxleyvalleyprotectionsociety.co.uk/ http://92.19.232.58:82/index.html i run my owncloud server with 1gb ram and 1.66ghz cpu but it could easily be run on the other lower spec machines the only things that i listed that would make it fry i think are the video game servers
Re: [Trisquel-users] New arrival
but it is very easy to install libreboot on a x60 yourself
Re: [Trisquel-users] help me choose a configuration
Icecat was working fine on my system in Trisquel mini, and I think in Mint too. this is not being a resource hog this is pegging one cpu to max in a broken sort of way.
Re: [Trisquel-users] experience with Trisquel mini
try running this command and see if it can be run!: sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install git git clone https://notabug.org/tomlukeywood/freenetbootin.git cd freenetbootin make sudo ./unetbootin sudo rm -r ../freenetbootin
Re: [Trisquel-users] help me choose a configuration
i fixed grub - boot-pc was not installed only boot-pc bin ?? anyway icecat is still a problem but so far other things are working ok. it shouldn't be this difficult
[Trisquel-users] Trisquel 7 feedback (with hardware details)
I am running an Acer Aspire One. Former Ubuntu user, sat a spell on Debian too. Been running 6 Toutatis for about 2 years. Install stays pretty stable for at least that long, even with me installing a lot of extra packages for testing, so pretty reliable, and simple to use. Easy install, works from a USB with UNetbootin, and I'd been thinking it was about time for a fresh install. Just installed 7 Belanos on a separate partition. Had a few teething problems with the GRUB2 configuration (see GRUB issues thread), but got that sorted now. IceCat a bit wobbly, particularly with LibreJS turned on, writing this in Abrowser, in a guest session on 7. A few hardware issues. The display offers a much smaller range of resolutions (800x600 4:3 and 1024x600 16:9) than in 6, which isn't a major problem with one screen, but I haven't yet tested with two. Can't figure out how (or if) to switch from Metacity to Compiz, or change the desktops back to a square (they're in a line by default in 7, why?). The scroll bar on the right-hand edge of the built-in touchpad works in 6, but not in 7, which is a nuisance but tolerable. I can use GUI click-and-drag scroll bars, but using a touchpad with a screen this size makes them fiddly (any way to make the scrollbars appear as wider in Abrowser?). Is the forum the best way to give such feedback?
Re: [Trisquel-users] help me choose a configuration
IceCat has LibreJS add-on installed. It can sometimes be a resource hog, especially on slower systems. Now that I checked it with trisquel.info, it seems to require 40+ seconds on modern hardware. But with LibreJS disabled the website loads quite fast.
Re: [Trisquel-users] 'Abrowser' behaves strangely after a system update.
I am experiencing the same behaivour, but setting the reader.parse.onload to false didn't help. Icecat is unaffected. I also get the same output as ssdclickofdeath. I have 6GB of memory and 3,2GB swap, while running mini-trisquel.
Re: [Trisquel-users] experience with Trisquel mini
Can you please reply to the actual posts themselves? It's annoying to have to sift through and find the post you're replying to, and even harder when working through email, as am I and no doubt others too.
Re: [Trisquel-users] 'Abrowser' behaves strangely after a system update.
One note: I am using Trisquel 7 32-bit. Can anyone confirm whether or not this is happening on a 64-bit machine?
Re: [Trisquel-users] experience with Trisquel mini
You could give him a break and tell him to install unetbootin from the repos, its a lot easier for a newbie :-P I know you did a good job with freenetbootin but c'mon... unetbootin is not that bad :-P
Re: [Trisquel-users] Decentralised server: BeagleBoneBlack as a mail server/other services? Your experience?
What OS are you using as server?
Re: [Trisquel-users] 'Abrowser' behaves strangely after a system update.
I'm not having this issue either, and I have addons and plugins installed...
Re: [Trisquel-users] 'Abrowser' behaves strangely after a system update.
I'm not experiencing issues either.
Re: [Trisquel-users] experience with Trisquel mini
ok i did not know it was in trisquels repo's so yeah you can just find unetbootin i add/remove applications
Re: [Trisquel-users] 'Abrowser' behaves strangely after a system update.
Are you guys all using 64-bit or 32-bit Trisquel?
Re: [Trisquel-users] help me choose a configuration
If you type top in a terminal you'll see what causes this high CPU load. For me this reads a lot like this bug: https://trisquel.info/en/issues/8183
Re: [Trisquel-users] experience with Trisquel mini
Usually if something is in Debian's main repo it will be in Ubuntu's and Mint's and Trisquel's repos as well. If i am wrong please correct me :)
[Trisquel-users] Re : 'Abrowser' behaves strangely after a system update.
I have the same crash on my 32-bit computer, and no problem at all on my 64-bit computer...
Re: [Trisquel-users] 'Abrowser' behaves strangely after a system update.
What is the quickest way to get this problem fixed? It seems like a major issue like this should be dealt with more quickly. Also, why is it that as soon as a new package version is available the old one is immediately removed from the repos? In a situation like this I'd like to downgrade back to abrowser 38 but can't. I had to go back to 33.1 instead.
Re: [Trisquel-users] A mail provider based in Bulgaria, using 100% open source software, Tor-friendly and no javascript friendly.
Since I read your posting, I did open an e-mail account with them. Matter fact, I'm looking and researching to setup a e-mail server for us. My colleagues agree and vote for it, All 14 employees voted unanimously. I'm committed to my employees because of their vote! My employees would like it to be functional in 6 months. Anymore suggestion are welcome.
Re: [Trisquel-users] GRUB issues
This has gotten off topic (GRUB), so I'll reply in the general 7 feedback thread I started: https://trisquel.info/en/forum/trisquel-7-feedback-hardware-details
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 7 feedback (with hardware details)
In a thread of GRUB issues, we drifted into some general feedback on 7: https://trisquel.info/en/forum/grub-issues#comment-73834 onpon4 wrote about the lack of easy access to Compiz in 7: The tool you're talking about was from the Trisquel devs, and it was dropped in Trisquel 7. You now need to enable Compiz by yourself. The script is pretty simple, though, so you could copy it from Trisquel 6 to Trisquel 7, or 8 (whatever you upgrade to next), or just read it to understand how to enable Compiz manually. Ok. So does the script you speak of download Compiz from the repositories before it does anything else? Or is it that Compiz is still in the default install, but there's no longer a GUI way to turn it on?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Decentralised server: BeagleBoneBlack as a mail server/other services? Your experience?
Really? Hey, then problem solved. I didn't know about u-boot. Tanks for the link legimet, looks like some more interesting reading.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Libreboinc: A totally free Boinc, only for free projects
So, did this go anywhere?
Re: [Trisquel-users] experience with Trisquel mini
I have been looking for a way to install unetbootin for days, i really don't care which version, i'd be using downloaded images anyway. however I can't find it in the trisquel repo, and sourceforge appears to be broken so I haven't managed to get it.
Re: [Trisquel-users] experience with Trisquel mini
thanks! i'll try this when I get time for another session with it. Clear instructions like that from the actual source of the software makes things much easier. I can follow what the commands are doing but I wouldn't have known them myself. Of course to really make it easy may I suggest you make a .deb file download from your site? if the Startup Disk Creator tool included with Trisquel is known to not work properly, then why not just replace it in the distro with freenetbootin?
Re: [Trisquel-users] experience with Trisquel mini
I'm a bit unclear what you are requesting and in which case it didn't happen. If everyone replies to the post most relevant to their reply then the latest post forks off all over the place, doesn't that make it harder? Nevertheless I thought that's what we were doing...
Re: [Trisquel-users] help me choose a configuration
huh? you sound pretty advanced.
Re: [Trisquel-users] New arrival
and Intel proprietary CPU stuff removed from ROM doesn’t libreboot do that..?
Re: [Trisquel-users] experience with Trisquel mini
it got a lot further this time, but ended with bash: make: command not found
Re: [Trisquel-users] experience with Trisquel mini
You know you can install multiple packages in one command, right? For example: apt-get install qt4-qmake libqt4-dev git
Re: [Trisquel-users] 'Abrowser' behaves strangely after a system update.
It seems so, I have a 32bit computer and I'm having these issues
Re: [Trisquel-users] experience with Trisquel mini
i installed g++ and ran make etc and freenetbootin is running it warned me extlinux not found, but i can presumably get it if I need EXT2 thank-you! i will keep this thread as an example for future attempts to compile things though no doubt the procedure varies... can i ask at this point, how do I make shortcuts for menus or panel etc so i can strat the application easily? there must be a guide somewhere - feel free just to point/link also can i move the compiled app? on osx if i want to move an app to another computer i can simply copy the app (which is really a folder containing binaries and supporting files) to the other machine and run it - is there an equivalent procedure on GNU/Linux? it seems much harder to know where the actual binaries are, and one can't just double click the app folder to run it -but maybe that's just my ignorance.
[Trisquel-users] I can't seem to find a user-mode-linux package.
I need it to run pbuilder as nonroot.
Re: [Trisquel-users] experience with Trisquel mini
unetbootin isn't in the repos.
Re: [Trisquel-users] experience with Trisquel mini
ok try now! sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install qt4-qmake sudo apt-get install qt5-qmake sudo apt-get install libqt4-dev sudo apt-get install make cmake sudo apt-get install git git clone https://notabug.org/tomlukeywood/freenetbootin.git cd freenetbootin make sudo ./unetbootin

Re: [Trisquel-users] 'Abrowser' behaves strangely after a system update.
64-bit
Re: [Trisquel-users] experience with Trisquel mini
i know its just this why if theres a missing package it will at least install the others if not the one that failed
Re: [Trisquel-users] New arrival
doesn’t libreboot do that..? Sure, but some people might still prefer to guy from Gluglug anyway. In this way you get to support Francis and his ongoing work. As an example, I purchased his Libreboot installation service so as to support him financially even though I already had Libreboot installed. I wanted to support him. We need libreboot and it's in our shared best interests to be sure he's still around and able to work on it full-time. That means money to pay rent and buy food and etc. as he currently does nothing else but Libreboot. (If you think of it, the computer selling business is a way to support his work.) Freedom isn't free: Support freedom. :)
[Trisquel-users] Re : experience with Trisquel mini
build-essential is for making .deb packages. Here only g++ needs to be installed.
Re: [Trisquel-users] experience with Trisquel mini
making .deb packages is something i'd like to learn to do. i wondered if g++ was just another missing package does build-essential include g++? a thought- since trisquel is all about software freedom, and the whole point of free software is that you can modify and rebuild it - would it be good if standard tools for compiling were included in trisquel by default?
[Trisquel-users] Re : experience with Trisquel mini
Your chain of commands stops as soon as there is a problem. To keep on installing even after a problem, must be turned into ;.

sudo apt-get install build-essential

Re: [Trisquel-users] help me choose a configuration
I would recommend abrowser.
Re: [Trisquel-users] experience with Trisquel mini
yes, several times for various reasons since i first had this issue. i also looked in the web index for the trisquel repo and couldn't find it, os i think it isn't really there and the entry in add remove software is spurious, possibly related to earlier attempts to install it? any idea about that error when following your freenetbootin install instructions?

Well, that's really impressive. If this much can be run at a decent speed, then my life is complete, at last. Seriously, this is great!
[Trisquel-users] Re : help me choose a configuration
* can't find the app that tracks processes so can't tell what is using cpu. I do not know if Trisquel Mini has such a graphical application by default. But you can install that of the regular edition: GNOME System Monitor. You can install it from Add/remove applications (for instance).
Re: [Trisquel-users] help me choose a configuration
both top and system monitor show the icecat process using 100% when i try to visit this website. abrowser is fine. incidentally when i remove and reinstall icecat it has all my old bookmarks and prefs, presumably it is getting them from abrowser, is it supposed to share users in this way? It would be more useful if they were separate.
Re: [Trisquel-users] 'Abrowser' behaves strangely after a system update.
so only people on 32bit are having the problem it seems?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Re : 'Abrowser' behaves strangely after a system update.
No problems on my 64-bit either.

64-bit.
Re: [Trisquel-users] experience with Trisquel mini
I was requesting that instead of replying to posters replying to you by making entirely new posts, you actually follow up and reply those posts. It is far easier to follow the chain of conversation when the replies are actually threaded, as opposed to having to find the post being referred to. It's a tiny thing. It may, of course, just be a problem with my mail client's threading, or something. Can't be bothered to check out the website.
[Trisquel-users] Antwort: 'Abrowser' behaves strangely after a system update.
I experience the same issue. Never had any oom problems before. Disabled reader view but it still segfaults. No downgrade possible as mentioned by alucardx.
[Trisquel-users] Re : Trisquel 7 feedback (with hardware details)
Compiz is not part of Trisquel 7's default install but is in the repository.
Re: [Trisquel-users] experience with Trisquel mini

Re: [Trisquel-users] experience with Trisquel mini
go to system settings, then click user accounts... ? I see it - I wasn't sure if you meant there or somewhere else. The problem earlier, and also just now was that the pane wouldn't unlock, it would appear to but the options remained greyed out. I just succeeded in unlocking it - not sure what changed. are you sure you are not just looking to find problems with trisquel? lol Yes of course I am, when you contemplate spending (tens of?) thousands of hours of your life using something you want to know the problems before getting in too deep. That said, I don't think I'm being any harsher than I would be on any other system.
Re: [Trisquel-users] experience with Trisquel mini
changing your user account setting might of been what changed. and fair enough, any other issues?
Re: [Trisquel-users] experience with Trisquel mini
further to my last long post: specific issue that is probably multiple issues. example: I want to install unetbootin from the repo. * It doesn't show up in synaptic * it shows up in add/remove applications * when I click on the check box the cursor becomes a spinny wheel indefinitely until I quit add/remove applications. * sudo apt-get install unetbootin doesn't work (E: Unable to locate package unetbootin) related issue icecat doesn't show in add/remove applications but does in synaptic.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 7 feedback (with hardware details)
I have some hardware that had resolution issues when I moved from Trisquel 6 to Trisquel 7. If I remember right it was an ATI graphics card and in Trisquel 7 the driver module was blacklisted. I removed it from the blacklist and it worked much better.

[Trisquel-users] Are all Atheros Wifi cards libre?
I have a Lenovo Ideapad Y400 and have recently switched to solely Trisquel, which consequently disabled my Intel Centrino N 2230 because it runs on proprietary firmware. I was curious if all of the Atheros mini pci-e wifi cards would be compatible.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Are all Atheros Wifi cards libre?
As far as I know all the Atheros wifi cards series AR9xxx and AR5xxx work just fine. I have a couple (I bought one more and keep it ready for the future..) of AR928X and they work splendidly! Cost 15 dollars for 2 wifi cards. You can find them even for 5 bucks. cheers!
Re: [Trisquel-users] New arrival
I'd personally rather buy one from Gluglug anyway, for the hardware improvements, extra stuff, and Intel proprietary CPU stuff removed from ROM, as well as Libreboot.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Decentralised server: BeagleBoneBlack as a mail server/other services? Your experience?
Why do you keep talking about Libreboot? Such embedded devices usually use a bootloader such as Das U-Boot: http://www.denx.de/wiki/U-Boot
Re: [Trisquel-users] 'Abrowser' behaves strangely after a system update.
I'm running a fairly fresh install (from a few days ago) of Trisquel 7 (32bit), on an Acer Aspire One. I have 1GB memory, which was always enough on Trisquel 6, and I'm using a swap partition. Just updated to ABrowser 39, which crashed repeatedly. I had this page open in a tab: https://trisquel.info/en/forum/radio-talk-show-covering-free-software-declare-your-independence-ernest-hancock ...and the podcast in that thread open in a second tab. I opened a third tab, and tried to search !imdb the cartel thrice. The first time I did it from the address bar, instant crash. The second time I tried it from the search box, instant crash. The third time, I closed the other two tabs and tried it, instant crash. Then I open ABrowser, closed the session restore, and closed the browser. Then opened it again. Did the same search in the address bar, instant crash. Same again with the search bar. Tried again with the !imdb, same result from both address bar and search box. Then it offered me the choice to refresh ABrowser, which I did. Same search, still crashed. Same when I used the search bar in the start page. Tried safe/ troubleshooting mode, seemed to make no difference. I'd also like the option to roll back to a previous version when this happens with application updates.

Re: [Trisquel-users] help me choose a configuration

Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 7 feedback (with hardware details)
Glad to hear you're scrolling again! To fix the resolution issue it might be worth trying a newer kernel from e.g. https://jxself.org/linux-libre/
Re: [Trisquel-users] experience with Trisquel mini

Re: [Trisquel-users] help me choose a configuration

Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 7 feedback (with hardware details)
I would like to know about this script too. I have installed it and made a .desktop file to autostart it in trisquel 7, but I have run into a problem i had to work around. namely this bug. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz-fusion-plugins-extra/+bug/819302
Re: [Trisquel-users] GRUB issues
This happens to me with trisquel 7. It doesn't accept any username and password. Just remove the 01_PASSWORD file.
Re: [Trisquel-users] experience with Trisquel mini
have you run sudo apt-get update?
Re: [Trisquel-users] help me choose a configuration
when removing icecat i selected complete removal and assumed that removed the profile too, but I should check. I removed it manually but it doesn't seem to be involved in the cpu use issue.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Decentralised server: BeagleBoneBlack as a mail server/other services? Your experience?
That's too bad, but at least the data can remain more reliably on a hdd (thanks again for the link BCG). Yeah I know about yacy. I was thinking about searx instead. Butt it seems that should work since it's an option on yunohost (thanks Magic Banana). On the way, I learned about freedom box and the dream plug. BBB is better, and is ARM as well (less power consumption). Seems yunohost was first. Unless there's a serious downside to yunohost, it seems awesome with a future Libreboot on the BBB. Even libreboot seems like being overkill since there's no AMT/ME on the BBB.
Re: [Trisquel-users] 'Abrowser' behaves strangely after a system update.
I hear Icecat is better anyway.. ;)
Re: [Trisquel-users] experience with Trisquel mini
You have actually been doing this in your conversation with tomlukeywood and gnuser below. As of my whining, you had made a few posts addressing people across the board, which did actually make it hard to follow.

when the pane is locked certain things are greyed out - I would click the unlock button and enter password, the lock icon would change, but the greyed out items would remain greyed out. At least think that was what was happening, I'm applying hindsight to my confusion now I see how the panel is supposed to work. Anyway it works now. remaining issues: * why does add remove software show a different set of available packages from synaptic? * cpu craziness, now only caused by libre JS in icecat, but earlier caused by a wider range of things. Updating the kernel seems to have helped, but oddly not all at once it wasn't like flipping a switch it just improved gradually after updating the kernel. the next 2 are not trisquel issues, but more general: * not a bug as such, but with MATE and Gnome both installed the panel applet in MATE that lets you control network connections is invisible. I believe this is a known conflict, and wouldn't a be long term problem as I intend to pick one or the other, but if anyone knows how I can switch net connections on and off and pick wifi networks etc in MATE without that applet I'd love to hear about it as a short term workaround. * the impossible-to-grab resize corners in windows using GTK2 really bugs me, I'm aware of the alt right click alternative, which is great, but not so good if controlling the computer one handed while holding a guitar and leaning across a table, as I often need to do. this is a point against MATE and for Gnome3 fallback, I think, though it seems to depend a bit on the app. Also MATE in Mint seems better with the corners, so what is different there? Other than that I think I prefer MATE but there are pros and cons. there are quite a few more issues, that are not bugs as such but general issues with GNU/Linux common to all or many distros. Not sure if I should get into that as I'm finding I get better answers to obvious small bugs than to general why make it like that? type issues. I guess I'm concerned that if after much work if I get a solid trisquel install, and manage to work out a system to transfer it to multiple/new computers (looking into remastersys or similar) that the hardware support issue of using only free software may bite me in the future - however it is now mostly behaving on my laptop, though it was totally not usable on first install. So there's a defined issue, why does a system that behaves fine running off a live USB stick seem to have major hardware issues when actually installed on the same system? Having got a setup I like then being able to backup and transfer it easily between machines or reinstall a clean system with all my apps in place on the same machine is very important to me, and I haven't really tried it yet.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Advertising Trisquel FLOSS
i know how to use kdenlive(video editor) and have made several projects using it before and i know more of less how to use gimp so i could help with some advertising
Re: [Trisquel-users] help me choose a configuration
Seconded. Just use Abrowser if you want less hassle. PS. To completely remove a package (binaries and config files) type apt-get purge package.
Re: [Trisquel-users] New arrival
Well said. Support freedom. What I meant by 'Intel proprietary CPU stuff'- I didn't mean BIOS but Intel AME and AMT. I have no clue what they are, but Gluglug have gotten rid of them too, as well as replacing the BIOS.
[Trisquel-users] Advertising Trisquel FLOSS
Hi, I was thinking about Trisquel and how it gets recognized in the (tech) public sphere. While digging trough the wiki I stumbled upon the article on Proposed policies, procedures, solutions where it states: Team Leaders [...] marketing / press relations / artwork lead / active in fund raising (to learn about and write up press releases, seek donations, etc) Is there anyone working on that parts of Trisquel? If not, are there people around willing to join me in forming a team for public relations and such? vinz.
Re: [Trisquel-users] 'Abrowser' behaves strangely after a system update.
64-bit.
Re: [Trisquel-users] experience with Trisquel mini
i tried again. I have been looking in synaptic and unetbootin doesn't show. maybe i am searching wrong? i just tried add/remove applications again and unetbootin is there. why are the 2 methods different? aren't they both searching the same repo? now i have a gui glitch preventing me from actually selecting it...
