Re: [Trisquel-users] Taurinus X200 laptop now FSF-certified to respect your freedom
Hi Chris, Given your vast experience with Intel Processors, graphics cards and other computer hardware, can you help me? My computer is having following specifications:- [1] Processor: Intel® Core™2 Duo CPU E7400 [2] Graphics driver: Intel® G33 x86/MMX/SSE2 [3] Memory: 2.0 GiB [3] Mother Board: ASUS P5KPL-CM (1) Is it possible to install a 64 bit version of Trisquel GNU/Linux on this system? (I presently have a 32 bit version of same OS, everything works fine. One of my friend suggested 64 bit versions works faster and allows the use of more RAM, if compatible with the processor arch. So can I give it a try?) (2) Can I flash my BIOS with libreboot? (AFAIK, ASUS has some sort of flash utility (I don't remember the exact name, but something like EZ Flash) in the BIOS Setup, so I don't think it should be that hard to libreboot my computer.)

Re: [Trisquel-users] Problem with resolution in Live DVD
Thanks for the reply! Here is the outpup you asked: 01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI RS880M [Mobility Radeon HD 4200 Series] However, and maybe I am being slow on this one, but... Why did the older kernel had the ability to work well without a proprietary firmware and the newer one doesn't?? I thought the newer kernel would have better support than the older. You mean that the 3.10 libre kernel works fine at native resolutions (for example the one I mentioned 1366x738) even without the patch, right? I suppose all the newer kernels will have the same issue, right? Without patch, no deal, right? What is the latest kernel that will have support for a longer period of time that we could use without the patch? Seeing as the patch doesn't work all that well... Could you please provide more info on who is the person who developed the patch? Website, forum, contact, anything..? I don't like the idea of using a kernel that crashes on me (I want a stable and secure OS) but even less the idea of installing something from an unknown source. Thanks!!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Problem with resolution in Live DVD
> Why did the older kernel had the ability to work well without a proprietary firmware and the newer one doesn't?? I thought the newer kernel would have better support than the older. It's because the mainline bastards upstream decided to simplify the radeon driver. They love the blob so there's no problem in their universe... If only Torvalds showed some balls and kicked the blobs out of the mainline. Linux is extremely well established by now, vendors would rush to make their blobs free software.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Torify my Software Updater and Synaptic
I knew of that. It would be awesome if Trisquel did the same thing, but I don't think the project can handle it right now (the immense amount of work it requires is prohibitive). However, maybe trying to ask Ruben to get apt-transport-tor in the repositories would be a nice idea. Think it's worth it? I actually tried to compile it in my machine but it didn't work...
Re: [Trisquel-users] Torify my Software Updater and Synaptic
It's all really above my paygrade! :) I think it would be a good thing and that the threats are real but I'm no expert. Privacy and security are always good things and as Snowden taught us being paranoid is probably not enough.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Does Anyone Know How to Map a Network Drive in Trisquel?
"SFTP is for access over the internet, is it not?" Network protocols are for accessing over a network, public or private. The internet is nothing more than a network of networks. Your stuff at home is a network. Best not to draw arbitrary restrictions over what sort of network a given protocol is "supposed" to run on. There's no difference. :)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Midori won't open some websites because of security certificate problems
I too like locate (when the file I'm looking for isn't brand spanking new). Unlike other tools like find(1), locate uses a previously created database to perform the search, allowing queries to execute much faster. This database is updated periodically from cron. May I suggest the mlocate package instead of the locate package. mlocate instead of re-reading all the contents of all directories each time the database is updated keeps timestamp information in its database and can know if the contents of a directory changed without reading them again. This makes updates much faster and less demanding on the hard drive.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Help needed - Cannot log in trisquel after external harddisk not ejected properly
the file was .bck , so i executed 'rm -rf .config && mv .config.bck .config' first. Then this command "$ mv .config/gnome-session .config/gnome-session.bck" was showing error that particular folder does not exist. So, after reading the old comments carefully, i understood that i first renamed .config to .config.bck. then logging in automatically created a new .config so you would have wanted me to first executed 'rm -rf .config && mv .config.bck .config' and then to create a new .config folder and shifted files from .config.bck to .config graphically. i was able to log in everytime after all files were shifted.. I may have misunderstood the instructions, so please comment. Also, i am attaching a new log file.the old one was from the guest user id. Also want to thank you for answering with a lot of patience details, the tab function is of great help. Lastly, as this operation is taking a lot of our time, would you recommend i just redo the configuration settings on the old user or create a new user . Is there any fundamental problem which could reoccur in future if i do not find the fault file ?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Midori won't open some websites because of security certificate problems
Off topic. Supertramp, I too find navigating commands difficult. I do not blame gnulinux. I am almost always unable to read a man. Those of you who manage must be either skilled or have picked up early. About the 'find' ex, it is the '-iname'. Where did minus and 'i' come from? Much of the time to me it is like restarting when I face a new command or problem. I cannot figure the basic syntax, if there is any. Fx I wanted to use 'tcplay' by its commands. I did not get further than mounting a container.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Does Anyone Know How to Map a Network Drive in Trisquel?
Have you tried restarting the system? It should be automatically mounted on boot. To mount all from /etc/fstab without a reboot execute: sudo mount -a If that doesn't work, append "user" like this: guest,uid=1000,iocharset=utf8,user This will allow you to mount after booting with a click.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Problem with resolution in Live DVD
Thanks for the explanation. I thought it could be something like that but wasn't sure. I couldn't agree more. So newer kernels mean better NVidia support, but worse AMD support right?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Midori won't open some websites because of security certificate problems
Hi tonlee! I see what you say. I started with computers when I was very young. My first pc was a 386 laptop when I was 10 or 11. I have used DOS 3.1, win 95, 98 , me, xp and winzozz 7. Vista I skipped (didn't use computers during several years during the "vista period"). I switched to GNUX 2 years ago and ever since I have been reading and playing a lot, but I wouldn't define myself as "skilled". I guess computers (no matter what OS) require some logic, nothing special.. and I do realize that most people don't have it and it takes them a lot to learn but I really believe that EVERYBODY can learn (and should learn) few CLI commands. I really reckon that learning the essential CLI commands is not only beneficial to everybody's computing but also vitally necessary. If you know how to read you can learn!! I can recommend you an excellent pdf -> http://en.flossmanuals.net/_booki/command-line/command-line.pdf And here is a useful wallpaper that can help you too -> http://vagubunt.files.wordpress.com/2010/11/cli_rehashed_by_doom-d2yf3nv.jpg cheers

Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel and Ubuntu Phone
So I'm using an Ubuntu phone. While compared to other phones you're certainly more free here, it's not fully free in any way, so I don't know if it is relevant for this forum/list, but I can give you some answers to your questions: >I'd lke to be able to sync contacts and calendar with a POP/IMAP email program. I use syncevolution for this. I don't think there's a GUI for this (at least there wasn't when I started using Ubuntu Touch), but you have access to a terminal anyway so it's easy to configure and sync from there. I have my calendar/contacts stored on a server that supports CalDAV and CardDAV, and then just sync it everyday. That way when I make a change somewhere else, it will propagate to any of my other devices after the sync. Of course you could also write a cronjob for this, most of GNU tools and standard tools that you know from a Linux environment are available on the phone. (As long as they work with ARM.) The only thing that doesn't work for me is GnuPG, and that's why I don't use E-Mail at all on my phone, because all of my mail is encrypted. There is an e-mail client that is kind of decent (Dekko), but that's it.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Problem with resolution in Live DVD
You mean that the 3.10 libre kernel works fine at native resolutions (for example the one I mentioned 1366x738) even without the patch, right? exactly so. All the ATI GPUs have always required the proprietary firmware for video acceleration but they displayed the native screen resolution until linux kernel 3.10. After that, as lembas pointed out, they simplifies the driver so, all the kernels after the 3.10 need the blob for you to just have a decent screen resolution.

[Trisquel-users] Re : Help needed - Cannot log in trisquel after external harddisk not ejected properly
Again: now that you can graphically log into your user account (can't you?), you can rename the files from the file manager. You can display the hidden file from the related entry in the menu or use Ctrl+H. The problem related to the configuration of some application in your desktop environment. Not to the X server (the logs you show us are OK). The renaming procedure I was suggesting aims to find out what application creates the problem. If you do not mind reconfiguring to your tastes some desktop applications, then just (re)moving the whole ~/.config. Creating a new user would mean even more applications to reconfigure to your tastes, moving your user files and changing their owner to the new user. You had better just (re)move the ~/.config.

Most programs are single-threaded, i.e., would run on one single 33MHz processor.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Taurinus X200 laptop now FSF-certified to respect your freedom
Indeed, combining 100 processors together would in practice mostly just allow you to run 100 programs simultaneously without adding further slowdown. Multi-threaded programs that can actually take advantage of multiple processing cores do exist, of course, but it's a difficult job to do and typically reserved for programs that really need it. Even then, it's usually only a small number of threads, nowhere near 100; there's only so much you can do concurrently, after all. Some jobs can of course be easily split up, like brute-force password cracking, but most of the time there is a certain order you need to do some essential things in. If you have to do 10 jobs before moving onto the next set of jobs, and one of them is guaranteed to take 10 milliseconds while the rest of them take only 1 millisecond, it's no help at all to give an individual thread to the rest of them; you might as well just split those jobs into two threads, one for the job that's going to take 10 milliseconds and one for the 9 jobs that are going to take 1 millisecond each.

> Is it actually possible to replace the WiFi card in a laptop? That depends. Unless it's a sealed case, you should be able to open it up and replace the wifi card with one that fits. However, a worryingly large number of manufacturers implement hardware locks which prevent user-installed wifi cards from working with the rest of the computer, denying you control over your own hardware. I don't think that is the case with Toshiba, but Lenovo, IBM, Dell, HP, and few others do engage in this nasty practice. Your safer just using a USB wireless adapter from Tehnoetic or Thinkpenguin.

I have a NVidia :) You'd think that with the power and influence Torvalds and gang have these days, due to the popularity of the Linux kernel, they could easily de-blob mainline Linux and all the companies who have based their entire businesses on the kernel would have to scramble to free their firmware, or at least help out. A license change requires a lot less effort than completely switching away from the Linux ecosystem.

> (AFAIK, ASUS has some sort of flash utility (I don't remember the exact name, > but something like EZ Flash) Easy Flash, actually. > in the BIOS Setup, so I don't think it should be that hard to libreboot my > computer.) ASUS Easy Flash is a utility designed to update the BIOS with new versions from ASUS. It cannot be used to install alternate BIOSes. It's actually a lot easier to install Libreboot than all that- Libreboot comes with a flashing utility which lets you flash Libreboot directly to your ROM via software from within the operating system (in most cases). Regardless, Libreboot/Coreboot doesn't support your system. Libreboot only works on a range of Thinkpads, the ASUS KN4-DRE server board, and the Macbooks 1 and 2.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Taurinus X200 laptop now FSF-certified to respect your freedom

A machine with proprietary BIOS (and potentially other low level nasty things) but one that supports a free operating system? In that case, just browse around h-node. I'm sure you can find a workable system and get it second hand. If in doubt, just buy from Thinkpenguin. On the other hand, if you mean a Librebooted system, you're not getting anything cheaper than Minifree (if you're in the UK) or Libiquity (if you're in the US). Or just buy a Thinkpad second-hand and Libreboot it yourself. > 2. a laptop that has more than just Libreboot, I want a fully free machine Wait no longer! They already exist. As I said, Minifree/Libiquity. They even have low-level nasty things from Intel removed, like the Intel Active Management Engine.
[Trisquel-users] Fresh Toutatis Install on Fujitsu Lifebook, Wireless Internet Not Working
Hi everyone, I just bought a second-hand Fujitsu Lifebook T Series (model T4215). They were designed for XP, but this one was running 7 when I bought it. I tried to install Belenos from a liveUSB (made with UNetbootin) which had worked fine installing on my Acer Aspire One, but I had a few teething problems. The graphical installer crashed a couple of times before completing, and the text installer left me with a command-line only system, and my liveUSB borked by the installer putting GRUB on that instead of the hard drive. A separate GRUB problem left my Aspire One booting into a GRUB shell that I don't yet know how to use. Fortunately the Lifebook has a CD-ROM drive (unlike the Aspire One), and I had a Toutatis liveCD lying around from some experiments with an old desktop. I just installed Toutatis from the liveCD and installed all the available updates. However, my wireless internet is still not working. The network menu says "device not ready" which I'm assuming means a driver problem? I can think of a number of things to try: * upgrading to Belenos using the Update Manager * making a new Belenos liveUSB and do a fresh install * upgrading to a newer kernel Does anyone have any other suggestions, or advice on which of the above is the best approach to this kind of problem?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Fresh Toutatis Install on Fujitsu Lifebook, Wireless Internet Not Working
One more thing, when I tried to Belenos install, I removed the Windows partition, and manually partitioned to create a 20GB EXT4 root partition, a 4GB swap partition, and the rest of the disk as an EXT4 /home partition (about 75GB). I then mounted these manually when I ran the Toutatis install. Don't know if that's relevant but...
Re: [Trisquel-users] Fresh Toutatis Install on Fujitsu Lifebook, Wireless Internet Not Working
Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 3945ABG That is it. Your WiFi requires proprietary software. Trisquel, by its nature, doesn't include proprietary software so your WiFi doesn't work. Your options are to replace the WiFi card or to use a USB port for WiFi or go without WiFi. This USB WiFi thingy will work just fine without any proprietary bits: https://www.thinkpenguin.com/gnu-linux/penguin-wireless-n-usb-adapter-gnu-linux-tpe-n150usb
Re: [Trisquel-users] Simple Evolution Setup Q

Re: [Trisquel-users] Fresh Toutatis Install on Fujitsu Lifebook, Wireless Internet Not Working
OK thanks. Good to know. Toutatis is running fine for now, so I will leave upgrading to Belenos for now, and look into your other suggestions. Is it actually possible to replace the WiFi card in a laptop?
[Trisquel-users] Re : Problem with resolution in Live DVD
See https://trisquel.info/forum/screen-resolution-0 (you can apparently get the correct resolution with a 3.11 kernel).
[Trisquel-users] Re : Fresh Toutatis Install on Fujitsu Lifebook, Wireless Internet Not Working
You can try to update the kernel: https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/update-linux-libre-kernel However, it is very likely that there is no free firmware for your Wifi card ('lspci' would tell). Even in the latest kernel. The solution therefore becomes to substitute the Wifi card or use a Wifi adapter. To have the guarantee that it will work with Linux-libre (hence Trisquel), you can get it from http://libre.thinkpenguin.com or http://tehnoetic.com (other vendors may sell some supported hardware but they never provide the relevant information: the chipset).
[Trisquel-users] Re : Professional Photography Tools Free Software
GIMP + the UFRaw extension I guess. However Trisquel's repository has other programs that handle the RAW formats: RawTherapee and Darktable. And there are programs to organize (chronologically, with tags, etc.) the pictures. Shotwell in particular.
