I think if you're not a whistleblower, your worries here are exaggerated.
There is no way for a spy agency to listen to EVERY guy with a smartphone.
Just think about it, those are millions.
Maybe your voice gets checked by a machine for some sort of keywords, but
even this scenario i think is unlikely.
So I think the huge number of users ensures that no human would listen to you

Well, certainly you are less free in terms of software freedom, symbian is
proprietary from Nokia and it only supports a handful of applications (most
of which are proprietary anyway).

In terms of my question, I feel inclined that they are both the same, with
the smarpthone being a little bit better... Depending on the internal build
of each smartphone.

I remember a couple of articles about how easy the exploitation of GSM
cards/networks is. So, I feel the older models (which were built back when
people thought those things were secure) will be probably easy to exploit.
Not only that, but the fact that several law enforcement agencies have long
used phone spy to track criminals, makes it very apparent that phones are NOT
secure. So, maybe the new smartphone thing has a few advantages, if the OS
can indeed control the GPS and the micro, it might be able to interfere with
the spy. But again it will depend on the internal build.

As for old models, maybe there are some that are hard to exploit, not on
purpose by the maker but on "accident" they made it like that, but we are
hardly in the know of which models to use. And even so, the fact that we
can't flash the firmware running inside makes it hard to trust the device.

A good source would be Jacob Appelbaum, since he has dealt with that kind of
stuff for a long time now. But in his talks usually he mentions how the spy
occurs, it's rare to listen him giving solutions, I think it's because apart
from the software part, we don't have many solutions.

Damn, I just want a phone that can be trusted not to be a listening device. I
know they have geo-location of me, it's necessary for the phone to work, I

Re: [Trisquel-users] So, where do you guys get Content that's Non-free yet DRM-free? (not talking about Games unless there's a free engine)

2015-11-18 Thread Adonay Felipe Nogueira
I don't really know how deep game data integrates with game engines, but
if the game data is just non-functional (no scripts, fonts, manuals,
executables, and so on) then any correctly licensed game data that
allows the user to at least share the work for non-commercial purposes
will be just fine.

But if the game data happens to have functional data then there's room
for software freedom and, personally speaking, simply asking for
DRM-free game data won't solve the moral, and perhaps even ethical,
dilemmas that will arise.

this does not affect the contents of /etc/default/grub, the primary
configuration interface designed for the users. I have a

Re: [Trisquel-users] Difference between Linux-libre kernel and Debian (main) kernel?

> So what are you doing here then?

I was Trisquel user for several months. I joined the forum some time into my
Trisquel adventure. I remain because I enjoy partaking in the discussion and
helping GNUbies when I can. I use GNU/Linux and free software generally. I
think that gives me license enough to be here- and on top of that I have
experience with running Debian-based distributions (including Trisquel) which
means I can occasionally lend a hand (though others usually beat me to it). I
don't recommend non-free software or use it. I promote free software when the
opportunity presents itself. I think I have every right to be here.

> Weird, in another thread you are saying
> a future trisquel should be based on debian implying it is newby friendly,

You have completely misrepresented my argument. I did not say that Trisquel
should be based on Debian because Debian was newbie-friendly, but because
Debian is primarily a free software project, which should be supported by free
derivatives. I think distributions based on Ubuntu are a bad thing, because
they support Ubuntu, which is a heinous pile of 'open-source' blocking out the
sun in the free world.

Regardless of where it draws packages from, Trisquel will be more user-friendly
than Debian because unlike Debian, Trisquel's entire purpose is to be
user-friendly and usable by the masses. Trisquel being based on Debian would
not in any way result in sacrificing user-friendliness, because the Trisquel DE
could be kept, the Trisquel community, website, and most of the documentation
could be kept, even the spins (Mini, Standard) could be kept. Trisquel being
based on Debian or Ubuntu has no significant impact on user-friendliness, just
package sources.

It is you who is confused.

> I think we can figure out what your true motives are. You use Debian for
> the same reasons some others do, Because it is more popular and you are
> scared or ashamed to use a distro that is not supported by alot of people.

Popularity in itself is not an argument for anything. If I was really just in
it for the popularity, I'd be using Windows and not GNU/Linux.

I use Debian because I want newer and more vanilla packages, more control over
my system, and freedom from the Ubuntu taint. I personally prefer Debian over
Trisquel, and that is hardly a crime. I see no point in going on witch-hunts
for Debian users.

I am no longer a newbie, and I care about my freedom. I also know how to stay
free, and ensure that I do not install non-free software. That is why I do not
have contrib or non-free enabled in my /etc/apt/sources.list, and do not
install non-free software from third party sources either.

To others, however, I recommend Trisquel because it is more user-friendly, has
a (mostly) friendly community, and has a stronger stance towards non-free
software than, say, Debian. I also install Trisquel for others and prepare
Trisquel installation media for new users of GNU/Linux.

> Trisquel is not part enough of the cool crowd for you, You don't feel
> superior over othoers using it.

This is not true. I prefer Debian. I use Debian because I prefer it. I myself
went from using Debian (and after discovering free software) to using Trisquel
and back to using Debian. Trisquel is certainly not beneath me- if I was that
egotistical and 'coolness'-obsessed I certainly would not be associating myself
with Trisquel by even participating in this forum.

> You also can't get noticed on the debian
> forums or help channels like you can with trisquel to feed your ego. Thats

This is essentially true. I am not an established member of the Debian
community. I have found a niche here, and I like it that way.

> IMO, you don't do any favors recommending trisquel, but publicly stating

Yeah... no. Most people haven't even heard of GNU at all, let alone Trisquel
and Debian. I recommend Trisquel to everyone I talk to about free software. But
if someone asked me what distro I used, then I wouldn't lie to them about it. I
use Debian, and admit it when asked.

> That would be like mint and ubuntu supporters and contributors not actually
> using ubuntu or mint. Ludicrous.

Not really. Exclusively using the distribution you develop is not a requirement
of contributing to said distribution. On the other hand, if someone promoted a
distribution without using it, I don't see how that is hypocritical. I use
Debian for certain reasons, and I promote Trisquel for other reasons.

[Trisquel-users] Antwort: Does replicant support 3G/4G on any devices?

2015-11-18 Thread shiretoko
Just to be clear: in order to function, the 3G/4G does not require any
_installation_ of proprietary firmware.

Unlike wifi, it will work out of the box when you install replicant.
I'm not sure, but i think this is what is normally referred to as "free
userspace".
This userspace is 100% free software if you install replicant, and mobile
internet will work out of the box.

What jxself says is true, however. But so far, a replicant phone is the best
that we have.
A normal android smartphone is completely controlled by google and dozens of
proprietary apps. You don't even have root access, can't even get rid of the
bloatware.
Compared to that, a replicant phone is a huge step up.

[Trisquel-users] Re : Why do some old kernels still stay?

The headers are indeed optional (and not installed by default, in Trisquel 7

What I don't know and would really love to, is: what is better in terms of
"being remotely controllable", a smartphone or a regular old time cell-phone?
Let's compare like Nokia 3310 and Samsung Galaxy S2 (two, with replicant and
stock rom). Should the cell-phone be more "secure"? Or can Galaxy Replicant
actually do things like "truly disable modem" or "truly cut off the micro"
that would otherwise be less secure in a standard cell-phone?

Also, is there any free software that can be installed in old cell-phones?

That is pretty clear/honest to me.

"triskel" and "trisquel-base" are meta-packages: they only are a convenient

meta-packages do not lead to removing any actual program.

The only drawback (that can be seen as an advantage too) is that you would
not discover any new program that the Trisquel developers may decide to
include in the future default system (e.g., for Trisquel 8) by adding them as

2015-11-18 Thread tomlukeywood
I tried to join forces with someone else who was making the same thing but
with Coreboot, but for some reason they stopped answering my emails and so I
didn’t continue.

Also the code I was writing at the time was unbelievably messy and
repetitive.
just look:
https://notabug.org/tomlukeywood/Libreboot_Flashing_Utility/src/master/main.c

But it would be a good idea to try again.

I think it would work better (due to the fact I don’t have much experience
in making medium sized projects)

to work with someone else to make sure It all stays organised.

Is there anyone that would want to help work on this project?

If anyone is interested feel free to email me:

[Trisquel-users] Antwort: Minifree price change

2015-11-18 Thread shiretoko
First, all i did was pointing out that the minifree project earns money
mostly due to the fact that not everybody can flash libreboot on every pc
without technical skills - this is a fact, not an accusation.
If it was easily possible to flash libreboot, who would pay 700 bucks for an
outdated laptop like that?

To this point, i did not talk about the intentions of minifree at all.
Later, I said that i don't *expect* the documentation to become more easier
under those circumstances.

I refuse to call this an accusation, but whatever.
After all, minifree is a company and i'm pretty sure the maker of minifree
wants to earn some cash, like everybody.

Again, that's normal - where's the accusation?

"The difficulty in installing libreboot on these laptops is not the fault of
Francis or anyone else involved with the libreboot project. We've looked into
this and tried to make it easier. External programming is the only way. It
sucks, but blaming the libreboot project for that is wrong."

Maybe it's that way, maybe it's not.
I can't tell, most costumers can't either.
I just know the rules of the market and therefore i'm rightfully suspicious.
Talk is cheap, son.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Issue removing Apparmor

2015-11-18 Thread t8mf4nu6lizp

You're confusing two things.

If you uninstall package A and it says it needs to remove also package B it
means package B depends on package A. (Yes, there are some very strange
dependencies... and metapackages.)

Synaptic's remove completely option means that you uninstall a package and
its system wide configuration.
