[Trisquel-users] anyone heard of nitrokey?
I am surprised no one has heard of it, but here is the website, https://www.nitrokey.com/ the reason i say no one must have heard of it, is because no one has posted this anywhere in the forums. ;) Could we get a version of the nitrokey storage/pro app into the trisquel repository? It is apparently open source/free software. I know how some of you feel about "open source" but it is used in the gpl3 license so i would think you would be jumping to find about this, They have 8GB-64GB encrypted flash drives being sold on a campaign in indiegogo website. Can someone check to see if this is a legit thing? I am very curious myself. I am certian privacy advocates will love this if it is genuine.

I just try to boot (Trisquel 7) with no Internet access. It took about 20s. Like always. And I have not altered the default configuration w.r.t. networking. Trisquel makes it easy to install and use free software. It does not help the installation of non-free software but it does not purposely make it hard to install non-free software either.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Does replicant support 3G/4G on any devices?
So, now it's time for me to shake my new old cellphone publicly and scream "Yo-ho! Thief-Thief-Thiiief! Come get my cellphone!". :D Let's see how far I, a not-so-experienced hacker, can hack this cellphone (and disappoint myself with my failed attempts) or stay looking at the non-free software on it until I get angry and trow it in the freeway, along with the SIM card this time. :D Or perhaps I could donate this hardware to someone more experienced, but to do that I would have to keep the cellphone untouched, let alone pay lots of fees to cover the transportation and government taxes, and have to face my Big Mother (which is the one who gave me this "gift"). :D
Re: [Trisquel-users] Does replicant support 3G/4G on any devices?
Well, certainly you are less free in terms of software freedom, symbian is proprietary from Nokia and it only supports a handful of applications (most of which are proprietary anyway). In terms of my question, I feel inclined that they are both the same, with the smarpthone being a little bit better... Depending on the internal build of each smartphone. I remember a couple of articles about how easy the exploitation of GSM cards/networks is. So, I feel the older models (which were built back when people thought those things were secure) will be probably easy to exploit. Not only that, but the fact that several law enforcement agencies have long used phone spy to track criminals, makes it very apparent that phones are NOT secure. So, maybe the new smartphone thing has a few advantages, if the OS can indeed control the GPS and the micro, it might be able to interfere with the spy. But again it will depend on the internal build. As for old models, maybe there are some that are hard to exploit, not on purpose by the maker but on "accident" they made it like that, but we are hardly in the know of which models to use. And even so, the fact that we can't flash the firmware running inside makes it hard to trust the device. A good source would be Jacob Appelbaum, since he has dealt with that kind of stuff for a long time now. But in his talks usually he mentions how the spy occurs, it's rare to listen him giving solutions, I think it's because apart from the software part, we don't have many solutions. Damn, I just want a phone that can be trusted not to be a listening device. I know they have geo-location of me, it's necessary for the phone to work, I accept that, but I want it NOT to listen to me. :(
Re: [Trisquel-users] So, where do you guys get Content that's Non-free yet DRM-free? (not talking about Games unless there's a free engine)
I don't really know how deep game data integrates with game engines, but if the game data is just non-functional (no scripts, fonts, manuals, executables, and so on) then any correctly licensed game data that allows the user to at least share the work for non-commercial purposes will be just fine. But if the game data happens to have functional data then there's room for software freedom and, personally speaking, simply asking for DRM-free game data won't solve the moral, and perhaps even ethical, dilemmas that will arise.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Re : Why do some old kernels still stay?
That is indeed normal behaviour. I do not consider that having my GRUB configuration 'messed up'. My question still stands: in what way do kernel updates mess up his GRUB configuration? Even though it runs an update-grub, this does not affect the contents of /etc/default/grub, the primary configuration interface designed for the users. I have a customised /etc/default/grub- kernel updates do not overwrite my configuration in any way. They merely update GRUB to use the latest kernel.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Why do some old kernels still stay?
Ok, thanks.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Why do some old kernels still stay?
I use the 3.4 kernel, and because the 3.13 updates more frequently it gets picked as the latest. Also, I have it set to default to choose the option 1 (advanced options) and the next option has to be changed everytime a new 3.13 is added. But I will remove 3.13 So, I don't have to worry too much right? Just remove the linux-kernel-image packages of 3.13 and the headers, 3.4 will work ok, right?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Minifree price change
> You're accusing the maintainer of a firmware distribution – a distribution which has stable releases, thorough documentation, and utilities, all for the express purpose of making installation as easy as possible – of intentionally making the installation process difficult for his own personal financial gain? Yeah, pretty much. I try to make the docs as complete and easy to follow as possible. Everything that I do to install libreboot is documented fully on libreboot.org. The reason libreboot is difficult to install on these laptops is because libreboot is difficult to install on these laptops.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Difference between Linux-libre kernel and Debian (main) kernel?
> So what are you doing here then? I was Trisquel user for several months. I joined the forum some time into my Trisquel adventure. I remain because I enjoy partaking in the discussion and helping GNUbies when I can. I use GNU/Linux and free software generally. I think that gives me license enough to be here- and on top of that I have experience with running Debian-based distributions (including Trisquel) which means I can occasionally lend a hand (though others usually beat me to it). I don't recommend non-free software or use it. I promote free software when the opportunity presents itself. I think I have every right to be here. > Weird, in another thread you are saying > a future trisquel should be based on debian implying it is newby friendly, > but yet here you are in this thread saying you recommend trisquel over > debian because it is more newby friendly? Are you confused? You have completely misrepresented my argument. I did not say that Trisquel should be based on Debian because Debian was newbie-friendly, but because Debian is primarily a free software project, which should be supported by free derivatives. I think distributions based on Ubuntu are a bad thing, because they support Ubuntu, which is a heinous pile of 'open-source' blocking out the sun in the free world. Regardless of where it draws packages from, Trisquel will be more user-friendly than Debian because unlike Debian, Trisquel's entire purpose is to be user-friendly and usable by the masses. Trisquel being based on Debian would not in any way result in sacrificing user-friendliness, because the Trisquel DE could be kept, the Trisquel community, website, and most of the documentation could be kept, even the spins (Mini, Standard) could be kept. Trisquel being based on Debian or Ubuntu has no significant impact on user-friendliness, just package sources. It is you who is confused. > I think we can figure out what your true motives are. You use Debian for > the same reasons some others do, Because it is more popular and you are > scared or ashamed to use a distro that is not supported by alot of people. Popularity in itself is not an argument for anything. If I was really just in it for the popularity, I'd be using Windows and not GNU/Linux. I use Debian because I want newer and more vanilla packages, more control over my system, and freedom from the Ubuntu taint. I personally prefer Debian over Trisquel, and that is hardly a crime. I see no point in going on witch-hunts for Debian users. I am no longer a newbie, and I care about my freedom. I also know how to stay free, and ensure that I do not install non-free software. That is why I do not have contrib or non-free enabled in my /etc/apt/sources.list, and do not install non-free software from third party sources either. To others, however, I recommend Trisquel because it is more user-friendly, has a (mostly) friendly community, and has a stronger stance towards non-free software than, say, Debian. I also install Trisquel for others and prepare Trisquel installation media for new users of GNU/Linux. > Trisquel is not part enough of the cool crowd for you, You don't feel > superior over othoers using it. This is not true. I prefer Debian. I use Debian because I prefer it. I myself went from using Debian (and after discovering free software) to using Trisquel and back to using Debian. Trisquel is certainly not beneath me- if I was that egotistical and 'coolness'-obsessed I certainly would not be associating myself with Trisquel by even participating in this forum. > You also can't get noticed on the debian > forums or help channels like you can with trisquel to feed your ego. Thats > basically what it boils down to. This is essentially true. I am not an established member of the Debian community. I have found a niche here, and I like it that way. > IMO, you don't do any favors recommending trisquel, but publicly stating > you use debian and never even used trisquel for more then a few months. > Because in reality, that promotes debian more then trisquel. Yeah... no. Most people haven't even heard of GNU at all, let alone Trisquel and Debian. I recommend Trisquel to everyone I talk to about free software. But if someone asked me what distro I used, then I wouldn't lie to them about it. I use Debian, and admit it when asked. > That would be like mint and ubuntu supporters and contributors not actually > using ubuntu or mint. Ludicrous. Not really. Exclusively using the distribution you develop is not a requirement of contributing to said distribution. On the other hand, if someone promoted a distribution without using it, I don't see how that is hypocritical. I use Debian for certain reasons, and I promote Trisquel for other reasons. > We need less people like you. Who's the one criticising GNU/Linux for being 'insecure' and praising Windows for the opposite? Who's the one insisting that freedom doesn't matter, only 'privacy', mangling the

Re: [Trisquel-users] Does replicant support 3G/4G on any devices?
You know, that's what they said about emails "there are millions of emails being sent everyday, no way they can read every one of them". And we now know they do. Even if they were just recording for regular check-up... I don't like it! :( What if a private company decides to buy recordings? The fact that it is possible to do so, is enough to worry me. It's an unjust possibility. If a person knows he might be being observed, he behaves differently. It's unjust power being exercised over me. Maybe I'm being paranoid, but the principles apply just the same.

So we should not do anything hardware-wise until we can change Apple's politics? Am I the one being too optimistic here?!
[Trisquel-users] Re : Why do some old kernels still stay?
It is normal: by default, GRUB is configured to always use the latest kernel image and 'sudo update-grub' is automatically run after you install such an image.
[Trisquel-users] Re : Why do some old kernels still stay?
You can remove the 3.13 kernels. One single kernel is enough (assuming you are sure it boots!). The package manager would prevent you from removing all kernel images.

Re: [Trisquel-users] beagleboardblack fully free software?
Yes, but makes little sense to take that away when a better product comes along. X200 won't be less free when that happens, so if it deserved the RYF why take it away? truth is, and you can see the link I posted above, these computers don't really respect our freedom, they are a step in the right direction. One i would like to take myself. However quantumgravitywas dead right: FSF BEST CHOICE instead of RYF would make much more sense.
[Trisquel-users] Antwort: Does replicant support 3G/4G on any devices?
Just to be clear: in order to function, the 3G/4G does not require any _installation_ of proprietary firmware. Unlike wifi, it will work out of the box when you install replicant. I'm not sure, but i think this is what is normally referred to as "free userspace". This userspace is 100% free software if you install replicant, and mobile internet will work out of the box. What jxself says is true, however. But so far, a replicant phone is the best that we have. A normal android smartphone is completely controlled by google and dozens of proprietary apps. You don't even have root access, can't even get rid of the bloatware. Compared to that, a replicant phone is a huge step up.
[Trisquel-users] Re : Why do some old kernels still stay?
The headers are indeed optional (and not installed by default, in Trisquel 7 at least). I think they are useless unless you compile modules for the kernel.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Does replicant support 3G/4G on any devices?
What I don't know and would really love to, is: what is better in terms of "being remotely controllable", a smartphone or a regular old time cell-phone? Let's compare like Nokia 3310 and Samsung Galaxy S2 (two, with replicant and stock rom). Should the cell-phone be more "secure"? Or can Galaxy Replicant actually do things like "truly disable modem" or "truly cut off the micro" that would otherwise be less secure in a standard cell-phone? Also, is there any free software that can be installed in old cell-phones?
[Trisquel-users] Re : beagleboardblack fully free software?
Read the first paragraph on http://fsf.org/ryf (emphasis is mine): The "Respects Your Freedom" computer hardware product certification program encourages the creation and sale of hardware that will do *as much as possible* to respect your freedom and your privacy, and will ensure that you have control over your device. That is pretty clear/honest to me.

In a similar vein perhaps worth trying issudo shutdown -H (Note the H is capitalized!)
Re: [Trisquel-users] So, where do you guys get Content that's Non-free yet DRM-free? (not talking about Games unless there's a free engine)
> They have propietary data, but the engine is 100% free. No, this isn't true in any case. All adventure games include a scripting engine of some sort which is integral to making the scenario work correctly. This software is a part of the game's "data", and under the same terms. The same holds true for visual novels, by the way.
Re: [Trisquel-users] "Johnny Carson flashes" are frustrating problem analyses
I remember that a fix to some computers not powering off after you tell them to shut down is to add a acpi_osi=X parameter to Linux in grub. Apparently X can be *leave blank*, Linux, Windows. Remember to update-grub after you change the config. Perhaps we could induce this condition.
Re: [Trisquel-users] "Johnny Carson flashes" are frustrating problem analyses
Read the links in my last two posts and you will find where the shutdown & boot messages are stored on disk. Nothing meaningful to your diagnosis occurs after the disks are umounted in shutdown.

[Trisquel-users] Re : Issue removing Apparmor
"triskel" and "trisquel-base" are meta-packages: they only are a convenient way to refer to bunch of packages (their dependencies) altogether. Removing meta-packages do not lead to removing any actual program. The only drawback (that can be seen as an advantage too) is that you would not discover any new program that the Trisquel developers may decide to include in the future default system (e.g., for Trisquel 8) by adding them as dependencies to the meta-packages that define this default system (e.g., "trisquel" and "trisquel-recommended" define the "normal" edition of Trisquel).
[Trisquel-users] Issue removing Apparmor
Hey all, As I have recently installed selinux and I removed Apparmor. As a result my entire desktop environment was removed. After reinstalling Gnome and KDE, I opened up Synaptic. Without checking "complete removal" it still calls for the removal of triskel and trisquel-base. Is this correct? I believe it was removed on a previous machine and do not recall a similar issue. Thank you in advance for your help.
[Trisquel-users] Re : Why do some old kernels still stay?

[Trisquel-users] Re : anyone heard of nitrokey?
If you use a program with a vulnerability that is exploited, then the attacker may be able to read your files in your home folder (no need for root permissions) including your private GPG key. With that key, the attacker can then usurp your identity (e.g., sign emails) and decrypt encrypted messages that were addressed to you. Disk encryption is useful when the disk is stolen. Not when a vulnerability in a running program is exploited.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Minifree price change
I tried to join forces with someone else who was making the same thing but with Coreboot, but for some reason they stopped answering my emails and so I didn’t continue. Also the code I was writing at the time was unbelievably messy and repetitive. just look: https://notabug.org/tomlukeywood/Libreboot_Flashing_Utility/src/master/main.c But it would be a good idea to try again. I think it would work better (due to the fact I don’t have much experience in making medium sized projects) to work with someone else to make sure It all stays organised. Is there anyone that would want to help work on this project? If anyone is interested feel free to email me: tomlukeyw...@fastmail.co.uk
[Trisquel-users] Antwort: Minifree price change
First, all i did was pointing out that the minifree project earns money mostly due to the fact that not everybody can flash libreboot on every pc without technical skills - this is a fact, not an accusation. If it was easily possible to flash libreboot, who would pay 700 bucks for an outdated laptop like that? To this point, i did not talk about the intentions of minifree at all. Later, I said that i don't *expect* the documentation to become more easier under those circumstances. I refuse to call this an accusation, but whatever. After all, minifree is a company and i'm pretty sure the maker of minifree wants to earn some cash, like everybody. Again, that's normal - where's the accusation? "The difficulty in installing libreboot on these laptops is not the fault of Francis or anyone else involved with the libreboot project. We've looked into this and tried to make it easier. External programming is the only way. It sucks, but blaming the libreboot project for that is wrong." Maybe it's that way, maybe it's not. I can't tell, most costumers can't either. I just know the rules of the market and therefore i'm rightfully suspicious. Talk is cheap, son.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Issue removing Apparmor
You're confusing two things. If you uninstall package A and it says it needs to remove also package B it means package B depends on package A. (Yes, there are some very strange dependencies... and metapackages.) Synaptic's remove completely option means that you uninstall a package and its system wide configuration.
