The GIMP and Inkscape are famous but great. Besides them I really like the various viewers of OpenStreetMap, like Marble, openstreetmap-client, emerillon and the editors for the same, like merkaartor.

I love "Back in Time", I guess its somewhat famous, but I think its way better than the stock Backup app and easier to use than command-line backup apps.

[Trisquel-users] Bookmark Sync in Icecat or Abrowser
Greetings all! Has anyone been able to get bookmark syncing to work in either Abrowser or Icecat with the the latest Trisquel distro? Seems with Abrowser it just hangs on login and with Icecat you need to login everytime you wish to sync. Is anyone else seeing this? Any options on how I can have Firefox-style bookmark syncing in Trisquel? Thanks.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Icons on the bottom panel -- remove?
Hold down the ALT key and right-click on the icon. a tiny menu will pop up where you can choose to move or delete the icon. Many people, myself included, have found this design unnecessarily confusing.

Definietly agree. It took me a while to get used to the wierdness of the Panel.

Hey all, I've ended up placing app icons on the very bottom of my screen (one on purpose and one accidentally) but I can't figure out how to remove them... when I right-click I get Launch and Properties, with no option to delete/remove... Any thoughts? Thanks. Harris

So far, there are instances provided by La Quadrature du Net, Searx.me, and also from Framasoft (FramaBee.org). So far, Searx is accepted in the Free Software Directory: http://directory.fsf.org/wiki/Searx
[Trisquel-users] Re : Fresh Trisquel installation shows mystical signs
I started up Trisquel from the CD without installing it. Then I mounted the internal hard drive where I had installed Trisquel on, but the /proc/ folder does not have any content. That is perfectly normal. /proc only provides an interface to access information about the kernel and the processes that are running. It only contains "files" when the kernel is running and those are not "regular files" (in UNIX and derivatives, anything is a "file"). It relates to absolutely nothing on the disk.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Fresh Trisquel installation shows mystical signs
What I was referring to was the state of the drive before installation. From what you are telling me, it sounds like the drive was brand new with nothing on it. Then the installer formated, installed a file system, etc... Well we did make progress. The live CD has a non-empty /proc directory and it works. My system has a non-empty /proc directory and it works. Your HD has an empty /proc directory and it doesn't work. Fixing that may or may not solve the whole problem. But I think it is a strong clue. I'm going to STFW and give more experienced people a chance to help.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Firewall, ssh server... security in general
On a default Trisquel installation there are very few open listening ports if I remember correctly. *sudo netstat -tulpn | grep LISTEN* will give you the info on which ports are **open and listening** to the netz. You can quietly ignore those listening on the localhost (127.0.0.1) for those are not visible externally. > A firewall is not needed in Linux True, when and if there are no open listening ports (Ubuntu by default). An excellent practice IMHO is to purge any and every service you don't need. For example, if you don't have a printer do you really need cups? Mind that we are very precise with some words here - we call linux the kernel and GNUx the OS. Btw, welcome!

Trisquel and Trisquel mini both work fine when run live from the usb stick though. dose anyone have any ideas? thanks in advance!

While the installation I choose the whole drive to be used, so the installer would create new partitions I assume (I didn't manually format the hard drive, because the installer normally overwrites everything itself by creating new partitions) and copied all necessary data. I didn't manually configure the partitions while installation. That's why I don't understand why this directory is empty. > What file system did you put on it? I don't understand the question. What do you mean by “what file system”?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Fresh Trisquel installation shows mystical signs
Yes the lsmod.txt was generated by the live system running from the CD.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Fresh Trisquel installation shows mystical signs
"The /proc/ folder on the hard drive is completely empty." That doesn't sound good. Did you format the drive? What file system did you put on it?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Fresh Trisquel installation shows mystical signs
This file: lsmod.txt is it from the hard drive install, or the LiveCD? My guess is that it is from the LiveCD, since you can't run commands so easily when you are in the hard drive installation. When you use the LiveCD and mount the hard drive, navigate the hard drive and find the file /proc/modules and post a copy of it here. Then we can compare it to lsmod.txt and see where they differ.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Bitcoin, OpenBazaar and Minifree/libiquity
One can accept Bitcoin in two ways * directly, which involves certain risks (Wikipedia is your friend) * through a service which transfers bitcoins to your local currency, for a fee, which involves other risks (as in "things that happen in a free market economy) Bitcoin is a legal payment system in the EU. Tax-wise bitcoin turnover is to be converted to your local currency and then taxed. Any reasonably educated tax advisor can deal with this and if they're unsure, they simply call the local tax office for a best-practice. Every tax office knows about bitcoin ånd/or other digital currencies. While the 2nd option from above (payment through a payment provider) does make this easier and they do that work for the receiving end (it's then handled like an e.g. PayPal account by your tax advisor), which might be worth the fee. Bank accounts and payments procession is not gratis either in most cases. Question is, should you trust bitcoin more than yet another payment provider. The answer to that is rather easy, because bitcoin is a payment system and not a greedy company that drowns little kittens. The payment methods mentioned by the previous poster, involve *huge* charge-back risks for the receiving end of the transaction, so it makes sense to avoid them. Bank transfer doesn't involve any risks like that. Using an ethical bank makes that even more fun. In any case, bitcoin is _not_ the answer to everything and simply just another payment method. If someone doesn't want to implement a payment method for their own reasons, let them, we're a free people.

[Trisquel-users] Firewall, ssh server... security in general
Hi all, I’m a new users of Trisquel, and I’d like to give it a thorough tryout — I do like it a lot so far. My question is about firewalls and related security items — I’ve done some research and now I have specific questions. First, I’ve read on the Trisquel forum that gufw (which is a GUI front-end to ufw, which is a front-end to iptables) is a popular and possibly even recommended “firewall” for Linux. Now, I had recently been using Debian, and after merely installing and enabling ufw, I listed out the output of “iptables -L” and posted it to the debian-user mailing list, asking whether this set of rules appeared to provide basic, block-all-incoming-connection protection. However, after at least one person pointed out several “holes” in these rules, I started to get very disconcerted… Really, all I’m looking for is to feel as “relatively comfortable” as someone who uses Windows or Mac and merely enables the built-in firewall. I certainly am not interested in delving into any arcane logic within the various iptables rules… I just want something simple yet secure! I’ve also read various forums that say various things in this regard, such as: 1) A firewall is not needed in Linux; 2) A firewall is only needed if the Linux box is running an ssh server; 3) A firewall is not needed as long as one does not use public wifi; 4) Trisquel evidently included an ssh server by default in version 6, but not in version 7. Please help! Any advice would really be welcome here. I would define myself as someone who has done some shell scripting in the past (mainly in Unix) although currently, I want my Linux setup to be as simple and straightforward as possible, while offering a high level of security. Thanks in advance. -Harris

"Skepticism is generally any questioning attitude towards unempirical knowledge or opinions/beliefs stated as facts" from: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skepticism I agree with your main point, root_vegetable. Your use of the term "skeptics" in a disparaging way, however, is both incorrect and ironic. You, and several people here with similar views are expressing their skepticism toward many of these bullshit ideas. Maybe you mean "charlatans" or "pseudo-scientists". Not "skeptics" as that disparages yourself. You are skeptical of ideas without a scientific basis. See the skeptics society and/or read the wikipedia article posted above. I'm just trying to make sure you point our indignation in the right direction!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Windows and Ubuntu Might Become the Same Thing?
> Science denialism should be punishable by law like holocaust denialism is in some parts of the world. This has done *way* off-topic, and I won't be posting further here. However, I'm genuinely interested in a (respectful) discussion about the philosophy of science, and the boundaries of academic freedom. With people making comments like the above, and actually defending them as serious suggestions, it's clearly a discussion we need to have. I find very few of the people that resort to such appeal-to-authority ridden arguments have actually studied science beyond high school level, and even fewer have studied the philosophy of science at a tertiary level. As it happens, I have, and I'm happy to share what I've learned, and learn from others. I've opened a table in the Troll Hole for such a discussion here: https://trisquel.info/en/forum/science-denialism-academic-freedom-and-philosophy-science
Re: [Trisquel-users] Fresh Trisquel installation shows mystical signs
I tried the procedure runner8 mentioned. But sadly nothing changes. Could one of you please explain to me what's the aim behind this? I don't get the idea of this loop. Next I'll test the the same thing but trying to install a newer kernel like Magic Banana said. (I already installed a 4.somthing kernel with the NetInstall image but that didn't make a change)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Fresh Trisquel installation shows mystical signs
Well, the last line of dmesg says it can't mount some removable media. Do you have a USB device attached? The thing is, you are saying the laptop works perfectly when run off the liveCD. Let's compare the modules. Use the LiveCD to access the /proc/modules file that is on the HD and post that here. Then, while using the LiveCD, type: lsmod and post the content here. We will then compare what modules are loaded in each case.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Bitcoin, OpenBazaar and Minifree/libiquity
bitcoin is difficult accounting wise: * most accountants don't understand bitcoin * UK specific: for EU customers, to GBP exchange rate set by HMRC (UK tax authority) must be recorded for VAT purposes. The UK government doesn't seem to have exchange rates for bitcoin. (workaround is to do bitcoin sales in a separate "sole trader" business, without VAT, but that is a bit sketchy) Bitcoin has a lot of practicality issues, at least with UK based businesses. This also applies to US businesses. Minifree basically decided some time ago that using wire transfer is the best overall method for now.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Fresh Trisquel installation shows mystical signs
I rewrote the USB drive with the Trisquel mini image, because the USB drive only got a capacity of 1GB and I couldn't use the NetInstall image on a USB drive like root_vegetable explained. I realized the installation process (with USB drive and CD), of the Trisquel mini image, installs the lowlatency kernel. The NetInstall and the standard image (1.5GB image; does this image have a name?) both install the generic kernel, why? But the neither the USB installation nor the lowlatency kernel made a difference. The signs are still here.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Fresh Trisquel installation shows mystical signs
Thanks for all your help guys I appreciate it very much! I tried to reset the terminal by using the command “reset”. It looks similar to my working Asus, but the signs are still here (first a black screen and then about a second later the prompt returns). The output of dmesg is attached. What log files do you what to look at? Syslog? Now to the similar problem on askubuntu: At first I thought the problem with the display occurs randomly. As I described above some times Trisquel starts normally but more often this gibberish shows up. About every 10th reboot Trisquel starts normally. But now after reading the answer in askubuntu I notices the first reboot after installing Trisquel always works. I just installed updates then. Many updates. It seems to be the case as WillHaley described: “I assume this issue presented itself to you "after a few updates" because one of those updates triggered a rebuild of initramfs without the necessary video driver.” (But still after these updates Trisquel sometimes starts correctly) So I compared the output of “lsinitramfs /initrd.img” and “lsinitramfs /initrd.img.old” with diff. Also attached (diff.txt). The rebuild of initramfs seems to remove quiet some stuff. But to be honest I can't really do anything with this. Can you? Scrolling through diff.txt I noticed the following lines: < lib/modules/3.13.0-39-lowlatency/kernel/drivers/gpu/drm/i915 < lib/modules/3.13.0-39-lowlatency/kernel/drivers/gpu/drm/i915/i915.ko So I tried to add combinations like lib/modules/3.13.0-39-lowlatency/kernel/drivers/gpu/drm/i915 lib/modules/3.13.0-39-lowlatency/kernel/drivers/gpu/drm/i915/i915.ko or /etc/mkinitcpio.conf MODULES="i915" or lib/modules/3.13.0-39-lowlatency/kernel/drivers/gpu/drm/i915 lib/modules/3.13.0-39-lowlatency/kernel/drivers/gpu/drm/i915/i915.ko /etc/mkinitcpio.conf MODULES="i915" to /etc/initramfs-tools/modules. (did this via the live system started from the CD) Then I restarted back into the gibberish. There I logged in with my user name and may password. Then I executed “sudo update-initramfs -u”. Typed my password again and rebooted. But still the same thing … I'm completely unexperienced with initramfs so if I did something wrong, let me know. Also I'm not quiet sure if the i915 driver suits my Intel Celeron N3050 Grafics Unit. I also tried adding video=i915:modeset=1 i915.i915_enable_rc6=1 i915.lvds_downclock=1 i915.i915_enable_fbc=1 pcie_aspm=force to the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT property in /etc/default/grub and updated grub. This procedure was described here: http://www.backtrack-linux.org/forums/showthread.php?t=48904 Until now I didn't test runner8's assumption. I will do this next. If I described something not good enough to understand, please let me know I will give my best to reformulate it in other words. Do you require any more information?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Will Trisquel 8 embrace Snap packaging for custom, Trisquel specific, applications?
I'm still not 100% on the Snap packaging since this is only version 1.0, but I have been seeing a lot of text that says "Upload your snaps to the Ubuntu Store" which reminds me of an App Store model to get and update them like the Apple App Store, Google Play, and the Windows 10 Store. I just hope its not tethered to Canonical's store as the only way to actually use them. :-(
Re: [Trisquel-users] Does anyone know *why* there are [generally] limited free-software Broadcom drivers?
Broadcom wants to keep secrets. They're afraid of losing unique selling points or differentiation. The driver is usually open-sourced but the firmware that runs on the device is closed source proprietary. Broadcom doesn't make wifi cards, I think. They only supply the chip and they don't want to lose control over their OEM manufacturers. Like MS doesn't tell OEM manufacturers what Windows source code looks like.
[Trisquel-users] Re : Does anyone know *why* there are [generally] limited free-software Broadcom drivers?
Is it a case that once the kernel included the blobs, and Ubuntu included the blobbed kernel, most people simply lost interest? I think so. Notice that the driver probably is under the GPL. The firmware (i.e., the code that the kernel sends to the device to run there, not on the main CPU) is proprietary.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Fresh Trisquel installation shows mystical signs
Did you follow up on this post I made: This person has a similar problem. It looks like modifying the initramfs may be a solution. https://askubuntu.com/questions/629922/linux-full-disk-encryption-password-prompt-completely-unreadable same problem:
[Trisquel-users] Does anyone know *why* there are [generally] limited free-software Broadcom drivers?
This is not a question I really know how to plug into DuckDuckGo effectively. Is it a case that once the kernel included the blobs, and Ubuntu included the blobbed kernel, most people simply lost interest? Or are the technical challenges of these chipsets such that its development is more difficult than other things? Are there any parallels here with the nouveau project? I'm generally pretty impressed with nouveau's current capability, and their website says that nVidia only offers minimal assistance to the project. While I don't think it's particularly germane to the conversation, I'll mention that my Alienware m17x R3 has this in it: 06:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4322 802.11a/b/g/n Wireless LAN Controller (rev 01) And since I'm in lspci, this is my graphics chipset. Would I potentially be much less impressed with nouveau if I had something else? 02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation G92M [GeForce GTX 260M] (rev a2)

I remember I had a very similar issue when I tried to install GNU on my sister's old lapy with an nvidia GPU. I think what you got there is related to your GPU.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Windows and Ubuntu Might Become the Same Thing?
I've read through this thread, and I wanted to make a point. This forum was designed to discuss ideas related to free software. I understand that people have opinions on a variety of other issues, whether they be right or wrong, but I don't see this as the most appropriate place for such topics; it detracts from our fundamental goal here, which is to help spread the message of free software. For what Trisquel is trying to accomplish, it doesn't really matter what one's position on vaccines is, or the holocaust, or any of those things, and I think that focusing on degrading people for things unrelated to free software is unproductive and childish. If you wish to have conversations about these issues, that is fine; just make sure that it's in a place designed for such discussions.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Windows and Ubuntu Might Become the Same Thing?
Sometimes it only takes a 4th grade science project to debunk a pseudo-science: " Emily Rosa, at 9 years of age, conceived and executed a study on therapeutic touch. With the help of Stephen Barrett from Quackwatch, and with the assistance of her mother, Linda Rosa, RN, Emily became the youngest research team member to have a paper accepted by the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) for her part in a study of therapeutic touch, which debunked the claims of therapeutic touch practitioners." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Therapeutic_touch#Scientific_investigations P.S. I know I said I was only making the one post in this thread. The key word was THIS thread--i.e. remotely resembling the topic of the OP: The Canonical/MS project. This has gone so far away from the original topic, it has become a thread unto itself. A thread that really belongs in "The Troll Hole" IMHO. Don't get me wrong, I like a good discussion of scientific epistemology as much as the next person. Normally, however, this forum is saved for helping people with technical problems. If some of the veterans here are concerned with how this will all look to newcomers, and I think they are right to give that some consideration, then relegating this to the Troll Hole is really the appropriate way to go.
Re: [Trisquel-users] What's your favorite not-so-famous application on Trisquel?
At the last Free software Melbourne (Australia) meetup - we had a great show and tell session for a load of great programs. The ones we covered where as follows. Screen ruler - You can place an on ruler on you screen so that you can easily measure elements. Red shift - Allows the screen to remove blue tones late in the night so that you can sleep easier. Pandocs - Turns a bunch of mark down comments into a HTML based presentation. Plus, An incredibly cool yet to be named/completed plugin for Firefox based browsers that allows the audio to be pushed out to jacked. I would recommend them all!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Will Trisquel 8 embrace Snap packaging for custom, Trisquel specific, applications?
I guess it really depends on how they are handled, if the Trisquel team want to maintain snap packages then why not? It is still free software so the issue is only with the technology and not the ethics.

Christianity probably became the official religion of Rome for political reasons. I don't think it had anything to do with science. Also, note that it's not like a secular nation suddenly became religious; it's just that the official religion of Rome changed.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Windows and Ubuntu Might Become the Same Thing?
Indeed. Sad, but we just have go go by the reputation of specific journals and publishers. If someone doesn't have a reputation, we just have to assume that they are not credible.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Will Trisquel 8 embrace Snap packaging for custom, Trisquel specific, applications?
I'm not a Snap packaging expert. Do you mean, for instance, getting the source code of the latest version of VLC and make a Snap package and introduce it for those who want having the latest version of VLC on Trisquel?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Windows and Ubuntu Might Become the Same Thing?
There is no debate.
Re: [Trisquel-users] video editing on a desktop/ server with only free software
Thanks for the suggestion Lembas. I can't help but point out though that "instead of using some purpose made server software", I could try to roll my own mailserver or listserver, or my own version of what GNU Social or MediaGoblin does. Given my extremely limited knowledge of server-side software, including the security implications you mention, it will generally be a better idea for me to pick a widely-deployed, purpose-made package instead. But I'm assuming you are making this suggestion because no such package exists, or can be run in full freedom, so again, thanks for the tips. One I had vaguely heard of (and remembered about today) is Kaltura. Has anyone tried (or heard of anyone trying) to run Kaltura (GNU AGPL) on a server running only libre software? http://corp.kaltura.com/Deployment-Options/Kaltura-Community-Edition
