Re: [Trisquel-users] Kwallet when opening Marble
KWallet is used for securely storing things like passwords. There was a bug in Marble that caused it to ask for KWallet at startup (used for an experimental feature) and it was fixed: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=346477. I don't know which Debian version you're using, but I don't have this issue in stretch.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Hosting Zimbra
Noted on the fact it will cost money. Anyone have experience setting it up?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Hosting Zimbra
Noted.
[Trisquel-users] Re : External HDD preparation best practices
I'llsave the really important data on some DVDs Notice that DVDs are not eternal either. Why would a cross backup matter since I have the original data on the computer's disk anyway? If all files on the disk are stored on another disk as well, it does not matter. I thought that you wanted the disk to have the only copies of some large files and a backup of these same file on the same disk. I want one of the smaller drives to be used as a backup mainly, and partly as a storage extension If it smaller, you will probably not have enough space to backup the larger disks. Backups can be compressed ("Backups" compresses by default) but, files on personal computer (movies, pictures, music, LibreOffice documents, etc.) usually are in compressed formats. As a consequence, basically no space is gained by compressing what already is compressed. But how much space to leave for the backup partition? Should I double or triple the amount of disk space I expect to backup? That looks reasonable. With an incremental backup ("Backups" does that by default too), you will be able to go quite far in the past (recover files removed quite some time ago or as old versions of files that were modified). Yes, I thought folders would be enough, but reading about collections managers (basically database management with indexing if I get it right), I thought this might be faster/more convenient. Well, that may be my ignorance speaking but I do not believe that searching in a folder would be faster if that folder is alone in a partition. I am talking about a search restricted to the folder in question of course. For backup, I need to find out inside the software I will choose. With "Backups", it is a box to check. But if you encrypt the partition, it looks useless to also encrypt the backup.

Electricity costs money too.
Re: [Trisquel-users] How about we send a mail to the fsf, Trisquel could use some help.
Here's the letter I'll be sending: Dear FSF, For the past year I've been an associate member, because I believe in being able to run free. The program I chose was Trisquel, after testing it in a VM. I was very happy. During the past year, I went to the Trisquel forum, and the IRC channel. The Trisquel community is wonderful. Sometimes, mostly in the forum, I'd see some unhappy people though; who say Trisuel hasn't been upgraded in awhile. Concerns about security, including for IceCat, made my heart ache. Thankfully someone in another group posted about a serious problem with the kernel, and someone there guided me to update it. As someone who loves Trisquel, and wants to stick with it, I am also deeply concerned. We realize Mr. Rodrigez is very busy, but he should be devoting more time to Trisquel. In the Trisquel forum I read that he's got too many things to do, which take away from his time to work on it. It seems unrealistic to expect one person to be able to handle so many things, as well as having enough time to focus on a program as wonderful as Trisquel. I thought working on Trisquel was Ruben's main job. There have been a few suggestions at the forum on how help get Trisquel upgraded, and I've seen a few of the letters, which they have already sent to you. They very much want to help, and so do I. Some have switched to other distros; it would be very sad if I have to leave Trisquel, too, because it isn't getting the attention it needs. We want to know that Trisquel will be around for many years to come, that it will always be as accessible and secure as possible, and we're willing to work together to make it happen. Sincerely, _
[Trisquel-users] Kwallet when opening Marble
Keep in mind it is a minimal install, without the dependencies. I installed gnome-keyring and launch it on startup, hoping it would remember the login/password of some program (didn't work). I installed Seahorse to manage keys. And now, trying to open Marble for the first time, it asks me to configure kwallet (which seems to be the equivalent of Seahorse). It seems I'm supposed to create a key. There's a bunch of key types I can create, but for one I need an email (since it's supposed to be used with it), the other not, it seems I can remember passwords (but it doesn't work). Btw that's on my Debian machine (I suppose I should ask on the Debian forum), but on Trisquel there was no kwallet prompt. Frankly, I don't understand a thing. Anyone has some experience with that?

Thank you Ali, your story is inspiring. Keep up the good work
Re: [Trisquel-users] External HDD preparation best practices
Yes, it's strictly a data external drive, no OS. Basically, I want mass storage (well organized) and backup (like dejadup or back in time, since clonezilla seems to be for mass deployment, or at least an simpler system reinstall, not so much for data). I have one huge 4to external drive, and a few more smaller external drives. I want the 4to one to be the warehouse, not used often, not even plugged in at all times, but well organized in folders, as you suggested. Maybe I'llsave the really important data on some DVDs, or I can try the cross backup you talk about (two disks backing up one another, right?). But I don't get it: let's say my bacup drive fails. Why would a cross backup matter since I have the original data on the computer's disk anyway? Or is it to have older versions of the same files? I can see how "self-backup" (the data's drive backed up in the same drive) can be a bad idea. And good to know that partitioning is now a worry of the past, thanks. I want one of the smaller drives to be used as a backup mainly, and partly as a storage extension, like you suggested. If I backup my home folder (or most of it), and a few system files, That should leave maybe some wasted space (which I can define with a folder and use as extra storage maybe). But how much space to leave for the backup partition? Should I double or triple the amount of disk space I expect to backup? Yes, I thought folders would be enough, but reading about collections managers (basically database management with indexing if I get it right), I thought this might be faster/more convenient. Even on a super large drive, partitioning wouldn't make a search faster if the data is organized in folders. That's comforting me in simply having a well organized drive. Also, taking GCstar as an example, I don't like the automatic online data retrieval regarding privacy. And I doubt I'll need to make queries by criteria. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GCstar
Re: [Trisquel-users] Not booting properly (messages not displaying correctly)
No, I cannot log into a text session after typing Ctrl+Alt+F2. Right now, I get stuck if I reboot. But I can boot correctly if I boot a second time. I am going to have to live with it, I guess.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Hosting Zimbra
Hosting will always cost money. If you host it at home for example there is the cost of your internet connection and the computer itself. Perhaps other expenses too. If you outsource it to a third party whether it's a dedicated server or a VPS they will want money. So there is always a cost to run things yourself. That is still better than using third party services for free though. Don't forget the saying: "if you are not paying for the product, you are the product."
Re: [Trisquel-users] How about we send a mail to the fsf, Trisquel could use some help.
I sent mine just now.
Re: [Trisquel-users] how do you read your books: pdf or html?
I like evince for the pdfs and fbreader for the epubs.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel netbook (mini) version
Just installed Trisquel 7.0 (32bit) on my Asus EeePC S101 so far so good! after updates all the applications I want worked! (VLC, Transmission, Webbrowser & File Manager)
