You'll probably get the biggest savings by using hibernate vs. shutdown.

Having said that there is software like bootchart in the repos to help
analyze the boot sequence.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8 is using systemd?!

2016-12-15 Thread taiji_tao
I think your best bet, if trying to avoid systemd, is to use a distro that
does not have it and is committed to not having it, rather than trying to
remove it from a distro that is tightly connected to it and has it as a
dependency for many programs. It is going to get harder not easier for
Devuan down the road, and would be harder still for Trisquel to remove it
from Ubuntu. Debian offers various init as options for now, but even they
(mailing lists, iirc etc...) have said this is temporary, going forward they
are committed to systemd unless something better is widely adopted; path of
least resistance.

Just my two cents.

Hi to everyone.
I receive always in my notebook this message: "libavcodec may be vulnerable

How solving the problem? Thank you and have a nice day.

Re: [Trisquel-users] ublock can replace other addons?

2016-12-15 Thread greatgnu
Ublock is much much much much much much much more than that. Look for the
square "I am an advanced user" and start blocking all third party requests
for example (scripts and frames). Then have a read ->
https://github.com/gorhill/uBlock/wiki/Dynamic-filtering:-quick-guide

Combined with noscript, with both set up properly, it is really **all** you
need. Well, I also use httpseverywhere.

As far as I know, uBlock is a fork of AdBlock, which supposes to be fast,
potent, and lean. It just blocks ads.

[Trisquel-users] Re : ublock can replace other addons?

2016-12-15 Thread mtlben
I use uBlock Origin with Fanboy's Social Blocking List, which is supposed to
prevent tracking from Facebook, Google, Twitter, and a bunch of other sites.

The other addons that I use to try to escape from the web surveillance
machine (when I'm not using the Tor Browser) are:

HTTPS Everywhere
NoScript
Privacy Settings
Random Agent Spoofer
Self-Destructing Cookies

I don't think there's much overlay or duplication of functionality between
all those guys, but if there is, please let me know.

Can ublock do all that?
Thank you.

This works, if you trust adding the repo, which is your decision, and
something I never recommend, but I like to let people choose for themselves,
because I like freedom...

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:heyarje/libav-11
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install libav-tools libavcodec-extra-56
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

It looks like it is easy enough. I haven't tried it yet (and will do so on a
virtual machine a few times before attempting on physical hardware) but this
popped right up when I searched for it:

Not intimidating at all.

[Trisquel-users] Abrowser not playing soundfiles - problem with libavcodec?

2016-12-15 Thread rhutter

Hi everybody,
for quite a while already i sometimes have been getting a notification in
Abrowser right below the bookmarks, saying:
libavcodec may be vulnerable or is not supported and should be updated to
play video
Now, i notice that i can't play (i.e. stream) audiofiles in the browser, on
different internet sites.
Looking into Synaptic, libavcodec54 is installed and updated. Could this
issue have to do with libavcodec at all?

I can play the audiofiles in Midori browser.
This is Trisquel mini.
Any suggestions?

Re: [Trisquel-users] Black screen at booting

2016-12-15 Thread onpon4
What problem are you trying to solve by not showing anything on the screen?
Surely you can't possibly think that the insanely tiny amount of CPU usage
caused by playing an animation or printing text is slowing down your boot
time significantly. It's problably something like a millisecond. It's an
amount of time that doesn't contribute at all to the wait.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8 is using systemd?!

2016-12-15 Thread onpon4

Trisquel uses whatever Ubuntu uses.

I guess you probably can still use Upstart if you really want to, but why
would you? It's pretty much abandoned at this point; Ubuntu isn't using it
anymore.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Black screen at booting

initally i wanted a "silent" boot, a black screen until the login screen
appears, but then everythings getting unexpected complicated, it seems i have
to remove 'plymouth' completely or replace 'upstart' with a different init?

Would it not be possible in Trisquel 8 to just install a different init
system if you don’t like systemd?
