Re: [Trisquel-users] Syslog and Kern.log

Hi Davide,

You didn't say what kind of hardware you have, but I am 99 44/100% sure that
the problem is a proprietary wireless card. I use Thinkpads and have to deal
with this poo poo all.the.time.

They're great computers once you get it sorted out. Thinkpads have kind of a
weird BIOS so you can't just replace the wireless card and you have to
disable it.

If you can tell us a bit more about your computer and your experience and
comfort level when it comes to replacing componants like wireless cards, we
can help you figure out if you can just replace the card or if you need to
disable it and use a USB dongle.

I am attaching a copy of my etc/network/interfaces file. Take a peek and
compare it to yours. It is one of the files you need to add a few lines. The
other is etc/rc.local, also attached.

Do save your original files as interfaces.old and rc.local.old before editing
them unless you have a Thinkpad with factory BIOS (and maybe even then
because hey, you might want to flash that factory BIOS and change it to
something else someday) if you want to give this a try.

A libre internal wireless card is going to be under ten dollars and a USB
dongle isn't much more.

Sorry I haven't been around until now. It's a very, very, very common problem
and incredibly annoying and frustrating when you don't know what the problem
is.

Hello, I just want to say Emacs is awesome :)

Re: [Trisquel-users] Keyboard + mouse not responding after startx (/home & /swap encrypted)

2017-07-16 Thread albertoefg

I3 requires to read config which is in /home

root user has a different config file that is not in /home but in /root

If you encrypted disk and /home when you unlock at boot you are only
unblocking the disk but not /home

Probably i3 freezes because it can't read config file and also all the other
important files like .bash .bashrc .bash_profile and everything else.

Make sure /home is decrypted before startx

Re: [Trisquel-users] Keyboard + mouse not responding after startx (/home & /swap encrypted)

2017-07-16 Thread mcz

You're right, let me try again this way then:
* the keyboard and mouse respond very well in the shell (well not the mouse
of course), but after startx, which boots i3wm, it doesn't.

* the keyboard doesn't activate the screen after moments of inactivity.
* It did work after startx on an earlier non-encrypted install.
But after encrypting /home and /swap, I have this.
* i3/the X session didn't freeze as the time display progresses.
* This time I enabled the numpad, and what's odd is that he led stays on even
if I unplug, then replug the keyboard.
I tried to switch to a tty, or even kill the X session, but neither the mouse
or keyboard react.
* ALL of these issues cease if I use sudo startx instead, which isn't
recommended.
* my manual .xinitrc in ~ insn't recognised (it worked on the attempt without
encrypted partitions) because X and i3 aren't launched on startup.

* I have read and write rights, plus I'm the owner of the files in ~.
* removing .Xauthority didn't work.
* After a third install, this time only leaving /boot unencrypted,
my usb keyboard can't open the encrypted partition.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Smart Phone Recommendations, Please

2017-07-16 Thread mcz
Not a full guarantee, but removing the battery should also prevent modem
activity.
Some phones have a dedicated battery, but it's the CMOS type (for the
date/time), it should not be capable of keeping the modem on.

But really, even with the Neo900, the only choice is either having a
functional phone (=a phone that can receive calls) and being traced, or
having having a dead piece of plastic/metal and being untraceable.

Bippers could have been a good addition (phone off+bipper on=still can be
reached, without traceability), but the cost is too heavy on the caller, so
it's not worth it.

So it necessarily means that at least from point A to B, your geolocation can
be gathered. but if the phone is unreachable, that gives some geolocation
privacy between A & B.

Personally, while I find it disturbing, trading my geolocation vs having a
functional phone, is kind of OK. If for some reason I need to go undercover,
the phone can simply remain at home, or faraday cage, or removing the battery
etc.

What bothers me much more is the modem isolation. Supposedly good modem
isolation is better than nothing, but it bothers me that it could have access
to the personal data on the phone. Geolocation, on the other hand, I don't
really care.

No, any of the bash files are the default ones.

The i3 config is also the default (I didn't have the opportunity to copy my
personal config yet).

It's basically a fresh install (with the drive erased) with xorg, i3 and
pcmanfm installed.
I added a personal .xinitrc just to see if it would work the way it did
previously (before encrypting partitions).

When I started using my first computer, I also didn't understand how
things worked, over time, I begun understanding that I could only solve
my occasional computer problems if I do share what I currently have with
the people related to the same thing I use, even though I don't need to
understand everything that exists in the universe, because I'm not the
know-all-person. :)

Still as of today, when I have a problem I can't solve, or something I
can't understand, I seek advice from people who are related to those
things, and that I think that might have some experience to share. This
can be as simple as copying a little piece of text from that log file,
and inserting it here for us to read. So, go ahead and do as I just
said. ;)

Note, however that, if the text repeats over and over, or is too similar
to various ones, please paste only the first occurence.

Respectfully, Adonay.

I checked the files but I can't understand what they say. I installed the
latest version of linux-libre kernel and sometimes I have to reboot the OS
otherwise it doesn't work: everything is blocked. At the moment I can't
understand what the log files contain, I'm not an expert

Try also using a search engine to investigate on the particular issue you are
experiencing. I see a lot of people had this same problem and asked the same
question on Buguntu forums etc..

https://searx.me is just one of the several instances of searx, a great
engine.

Well, the good solution would be to solve the problem that must be repeatedly
written in kern.log. What is it? Maybe it is a support issue that would be
solved by the installation of a newer kernel: https://jxself.org/linux-libre/

Hello to everyone, whenever I start Trisquel the Syslog and Kern.log files
increase their size until I have to clear them otherwise I don't have enough
free space to load the OS. How can I solve the problem?
