Well, but if I'm using something like torrents or Popcorn Time, then I'm
going to be seeding the files for other people, so technically that could be
illegal, right? I'm not sure if I want to risk getting into hot water over
that ..

Let's face it, there's not really any legal way to get around DRM, is there?
That's the whole point of it ..

Technically, it isn't against the law, to watch online. DMCA punishes the
uploader not the downloader/watcher.

MY thoughts on this are simple: do what you got to do, to avoid DRM.

Also, those websites are notorius for trying to censor, and spying on their
customers...

I wouldn't hesitate to avoid them. Look online for html5 websites that have
lots of content on it. That's my advice.

Options a-c are crap.

Again, watch it for free until they get the message that DRM is unacceptable
for any reason.

They just want to charge people for the same thing over, and over, and over
and well you get the idea...

also again, they spy like crazy on people. That being said, greasemonkey or
violentmonkey + aak-cont and your better off. :)

[Trisquel-users] Movie streaming/downloading with free software

2017-09-04 Thread leestrobel
So, it seems that services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, etc. are not
compatible with free software, because they employ DRM and require non-free
software to run (unless I misunderstand)?

In that case, is there any alternative movie streaming/download service that
is both legal and compatible with free software, or are free-software users
basically caught between the following options?:

a) Accept the DRM
b) Break the law
c) Don't watch the content?

If that's the case, then what is the least-bad option? I know this is kind of
a vague question and probably depends on personal preference. I mean, I want
to support the movie industry and I'm fine paying for the pleasure of
watching a film once in a while, but I want to do it in a way that also
respects the free-software philosophy.

[Trisquel-users] LibreJS not working with this site?

2017-09-04 Thread leestrobel
Hi. Whenever I enable LibreJS, I seem to be unable to load this site
(trisquel.info); however, most other sites seem to load up (although possibly
with some JS disabled). In fact, trying to connect to trisquel.info with
LibreJS seems to completely crash Icecat and I have to restart it. Does
anyone else have this problem or know why this is?

I'm using Icecat on Trisquel 7.

Here is a tutorial on this login loop problem. Maybe you can start your
research from here...

http://www.linuxslaves.com/2016/05/3-ways-fix-ubuntu-gets-stuck-login-loop.html

I've just installed Trisquel... about a month or 2 ago... I'm totally new to
linux in general. Learning it from scratch... Been having problems with this
login issue quite often, had to re install the system 4 times now due to
this... Had to open a few beers to cope with the stress haha

It seems that this is commonly solved by by tweaking the authorization on the
Xauthority file, or reconfiguring or re installing lightdm (or uninstalling
lightdm and installing another alike program responsible for login/GUI). Make
sure you have internet connection before uninstalling lightdm, as the apt-get
thing needs internet to download the programs it'll install. Otherwise you'll
end up having to re install the system like I had to

I found out, though, when trying to set up the graphics card driver, that I
fixed my problem once by uninstalling the proprietary driver for my graphics
card (nvidia geforce GTX1050 ti):

$ sudo apt-get purge nvidia*

All the times i have to re install the system for getting stuck on this loop,
the proprietary nvidia driver was installed (the only proprietary software on
the system)... guess some bad stuff happen for a good reason after all...

Since you brought this again, I'll state again the facts:

My comments were being hidden by people like you who were abusing the voting
system in an attempt to silence me in a thread announcing that Technoethical
has made available for purchase the most modern laptop with free BIOS. My
original post was also being heavily downvoted, which showed the level of
hate a gang of trolls on this forum have.

Seeing that, I've called for people involved with Technoethical to review the
thread and choose for themselves whether a comment deserves a vote
(plus/minus). That has been a reaction to censorship and the administrators
of this forum can confirm that in the past we have never downvoted posts we
don't agree with. Moreover, it's baseless and completely false that "fake
accounts" have been used.

It's quite transparent who is involved with Technoethical:

Gee, I thought purism was a trustworthy company, I mean they claim you

claim that they can sprinkle magic fairy dust on all the hardware so
that you can use it all without any blobs or firmware that is
proprietary... even when the drivers are signed with the most powerful crypto
key they can get their hands on! Doesn't that sound just plain trustworthy?
Can you

honestly say that they cannot be trusted?

And moreover, they claim to do what even libreboot and coreboot cannot

There doesn't seem to be a lot on the other two programs, but it seems like
all should be clear. Chip-mconfigs look like it should be removable; it's
only an openbox/tint2 theme manager tool, which I don't think matters for
XFCE. As for xserver-xorg-video-armsoc, no source or license is obviously
available. However, it's developed by Free Electrons, who seem like a free
software development company, so there doesn't seem to be any issue here.
I'll contract them just to ensure the source is available.

>Yes, I read and didn't comprehend:
"mpv url -> stream vid
youtube-dl url -> download vid
mps-youtube -> search, browse, play, download vids"
What does that mean?
how do you download videos?

Open up a terminal and write:

sudo apt-get install mpv youtube-dl

You just installed the two applications, namely 'the best video player a
human has ever made' and a tool for downloading videos from youtube and more
than a hundred other websites using flash, that is 'the most ubiquitous
malware a human has ever made'.

Now that you have the two installed, in terminal:

mpv https://youtube.com/watch?v=LldbjATAgzc

which will stream da teletubbies :P

youtube-dl https://youtube.com/watch?v=LldbjATAgzc

which will download the teletubbies vid in the highest vid quality by
default. The tool has a metric ton of --options, some of them are very
useful. To know more and learn use 'man' --> man youtube-dl. The 'man', short
for manual, is your gold, you want to take care of your gold, you want to
learn your gold :)

As far as mps-youtube the way I do it is I use python-pip. Newer versions of
it will not ask for sudo and will download the python applications in your
/home. Older versions asked for sudo (terrible practice for installing code
outside your distribution repo) unless you gave them explicitly the --user
option. I think you have the old version of it. So, the procedure is the
following -->

sudo apt install python3-pip

You installed pip, the python package installer

pip3 install --user mps-youtube

This will install mps-youtube

To upgrade mps-youtube:

pip3 install --upgrade --user mps-youtube

If you decide to go the pip way, then I recommend you also install youtube-dl
that way (and not via apt) as the version in your repo is terribly outdated..

To launch mps-youtube:

mpsyt

Now you have dem tools - may dem teletubbies fill your hard drive with
profound joy :)

Re: [Trisquel-users] Used correct password and still locked out !

2017-09-04 Thread 7en

Hi LinuxDummy,

this could have one of several reasons. I'd advise you to first check which
keymap is selected - if you are using e.g. a French keyboard while having the
US keymap selected, many keys won't match the letters that are on your
physical keyboard.
Secondly, as you can indeed login on another TTY, you can do so and type
"startx" at the command line to further troubleshoot from there. My guess is
that on starting the X server, a different keymap is selected for some reason
(possibly something wasn't set correctly during setup or something of the
sort). At the command line, however, it might be defaulting to the correct
keymap, which would explain why you can login there but not using your
display manager (the "GUI login screen").

Hope this helps!
