[Trisquel-users] Re : Testing The Trisquel 8 Upgrade Process
Although the installation of GNOME Shell presents no problem, it is useless alone: most of the MATE applications (in particular setting tools) are indeed inaccessible, but from a command prompt or a terminal emulator. That includes the file manager and only installing "gnome-shell" does not put icons on the desktop! 'mate-menu' would not even start from the terminal. Anyway, I do not think it would change what GNOME Shell proposes in its dash. The solution I adopted was to install the "gnome" package. It is simple but presents the drawback of ending up with pairs of applications serving the same purpose: MATE Terminal and GNOME Terminal, Pidgin and Empathy, RhythmBox and GNOME Music, etc. APT asking, I choose GDM3 as the default display manager. Although I do not know if it is the cause, the graphical session then crashed. I logged into tty1, executed 'sudo systemctl start gdm3.service' and could log back into the GNOME session. There now were icons on the desktop. Weirdly enough, the installation of "gnome" and its dependencies apparently continued despite the crash of the graphical session. The default theme has problems. I already mentioned the too-large crosses to close some windows. However, the problems look more general than that. See attached a screenshot of the Nautilus window: small and large icons listed together in the left pane; small and large button at the top; the cross is OK here. I believe that theme problem affects the default MATE desktop too. For instance, the launchers, at the left of the panel, look too closely packed. I do not know whether 'trisquel-compton-switcher' and 'trisquel-wm-chooser' are still useful. The former script does not execute because of a supernumerary character, ^M, at the end of the shebang line. The latter script looks redundant with the last setting "MATE Tweak" proposes to setup... and that apparently always turn the graphical session unusable! I question as well the usefulness of having "Vim", XTerm/UXTerm", "ImageMagick (display)" in the menu or even installed at all, user-friendly alternatives being installed as well. Finally I was happy to not see any GRUB password in Trisquel 8! I hope it will stay that way.

Next reboot will be on that version indeed. On a side note, 'sudo apt-get autoremove' would remove some packages that you no longer need.
Re: [Trisquel-users] i'm Thinking about doing a free software Community(Forum)
"Besides, i want to have the freedom of using webmail and no dektop mail client." That can be done. You can even move between the two without issue. It's called IMAP where your messages stay on the server. Plus, the use of webmail means both an email client and the web mail interface are both accessing the same store of emails. "I meant using a search engine and finding some information in the html archive of a mailing list." I suppose it depends on the mailing list software but GNU Mailman has a threaded view too. An example http://lists.nongnu.org/archive/html/emacs-orgmode/2017-12/threads.html and you can see that Nicolas posted a message, Eric replied to it, Nicolas replied to Eric, Nicolas replied to Eric's response to Nicolas's message, etc. But yes, as Magic Banana showed, the interface in Mailman version 3 is much nicer. I imagine the driving thing behind that is the young people of today seeming to live inside the web browser and deeming everything outside of it to be verboten.

According to h-node and the Debian wiki pages that chipset requires non-free realtek firmware. Congrats, you just found a bug!

Huh, that's strange, but anyway, I tried that and think it actually worked (see screenshots) :)

It is the file 'sudo apt edit-sources' edits. It looks like "linux-libre-4.14" is really absent from the repository (and "linux-libre-4.13" is still there): https://linux-libre.fsfla.org/pub/linux-libre/freesh/pool/main/l/ Try this command, which will install the Linux-libre 4.14 but switch to the next LTS version once available: $ sudo apt install linux-libre-lts
Re: [Trisquel-users] i'm Thinking about doing a free software Community(Forum)
There is already one such forum, albeit in French (it is Quebec-based). The forum software is Discourse, as far as I know. You may want to contact the owners of that forum so that they can help you set up a new instance in English. https://forumsdulibre.quebec/
Re: [Trisquel-users] Temperatures inside pc high?
I double checked the line in the sources list, and I moved it down amongst the other lines that had the similar kinda look to check if the helped. It didn't. But what do you actually mean with "/etc/apt/sources.list"?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Temperatures inside pc high?
That looks all right... unless you did not properly copied the line in /etc/apt/sources.list. Double-check it and modify it if necessary. I suggest you use a graphical text editor to feel more at ease. Since you are using Trisquel 8, here is how to open /etc/apt/sources.list with the pluma text editor and administrative privileges: $ gksu pluma /etc/apt/sources.list
Re: [Trisquel-users] Temperatures inside pc high?
Okay so I just added that line just atop all that stuff. Then I presses ctrl+x to exit and then saved the changes. I didn't specifically choose the format, I just pressed enter. And then I was taken back to the terminal. Then I did the wget https://jxself.org/gpg.inc Then I checked the key. And the key was good. Then I did the sudo apt-key add gpg.inc - And got "OK" after I confirmed my password. Then I did the rm gpg.inc - But nothing at all happened. The terminal just hopped down to receive another command as if nothing happened. Then I did sudo apt update - All packages are up to date. Then I did grep --color=always -i PAE /proc/cpuinfo - PAE was indeed highlighted in red, so I interpreted that as a "good to go". Then I did sudo apt install linux-libre-4.14 - I got this: "Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done E: Unable to locate package linux-libre-4.14 E: Couldn't find any package by glob 'linux-libre-4.14' E: Couldn't find any package by regex 'linux-libre-4.14' " :/ I tried to be veeery cautious about my typos, but should I try the whole shabang one more time, from the beginning?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Temperatures inside pc high?
btw, the 'sensors' command should also print what the min and max fan rpm settings are.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Temperatures inside pc high?
4000 rpm sounds a bit low to me. If your system is set up like mine, the folder /sys/devices/platform/applesmc.768 should contain some files that provide info and configuration options for the fan and sensors. For example, if I cd to that folder and type: cat fan1_max it prints '6200', which is the max speed of my fan in rpm. So, assuming your system is similar to mine, 4000 rpm seems a bit low. What does your fan1_max say? There are some other useful files in there that might also give you some insight: cat fan1_input should show the current speed of the fan. cat fan1_output shows what speed is being demanded by the system (signal sent to the fan). If, when your machine is hot, fan1_output is higher than fan1_input, then that shows that the fan isn't able to get up to the speed that the system is demanding, which might be a sign of a faulty fan. Otherwise, if fan1_output isn't equal to fan1_max when your system is hot, that might suggest that whichever software tool is supposed to be controlling the fan (applesmc kernel module?) isn't doing a good job. Another useful one is fan1_manual, which should be set to 0 by default (auto control), but if you change it to 1, that should allow you to set the fan speed manually, by changing the value of fan1_output. That way, you can play with the fan and see if it is able to get up to a speed that will adequately cool the system. However, I think the newer kernel is still worth a try too.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Testing The Trisquel 8 Upgrade Process
I installed the ISO on my older laptop. No problem. I installed GNOME Shell. No problem either. However, the "cross" to close some windows is extra-large, going out of its "box". It works though. Now the weirdest thing, which may be a freedom issue: my internal Wifi card works! I do not need the USB adapter with the AR9271 chipset! As far as I know there is no free firmware for the chipset in my internal card: $ lspci | grep Network 01:00.0 Network controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8188EE Wireless Network Adapter (rev 01)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Temperatures inside pc high?
As https://jxself.org/linux-libre/ instructs, add the following line: deb http://linux-libre.fsfla.org/pub/linux-libre/freesh/ freesh main That said, here is an alternative way to add the line, without a text editor. This command: $ echo 'deb http://linux-libre.fsfla.org/pub/linux-libre/freesh/ freesh main' | sudo tee -a /etc/apt/sources.list Given your record of typos, I suggest you copy-paste this command in a terminal. If you forget the "-a" option, you would actually overwrite the content of /etc/apt/sources.list instead of appending a line to it! Once the line added (whatever the method), proceed with the subsequent instructions on https://jxself.org/linux-libre/

Re: [Trisquel-users] i'm Thinking about doing a free software Community(Forum)
You haven't used a proper email client then (or maybe it wasn't configured correctly) because any such one will have "visual styling and all the nested replies."
Re: [Trisquel-users] i'm Thinking about doing a free software Community(Forum)
I personally don't like mailing lists and I wouldn't even know how to subscribe to a mailing list in such a way that my mailbox doesn't get flooded with unfiltered posts. I definitly wouldn't like to set up a seperate folder for this list each and every time I switch my mail client. And really, I think that i'm not the only one who stays away from mailing lists, so I definitly vote for a forum. To my eyes, they are nothing but relics from the past and I fail to see the benefit. Whenever I search for something, let's say a technical problem, it's just a pain to find the solution wrapped in a lenghty list of messages without any visual styling and all the nested replies.
Re: [Trisquel-users] (Trisquel Mini) Is it normal that bluetooth is not working
The 'download' feature in mps-youtube may work differently, since that probably doesn't use mpv, but if the stream feature just tells mpv what link to stream from it shouldn't be able to do anything mpv can't.
Re: [Trisquel-users] (Trisquel Mini) Is it normal that bluetooth is not working
Streaming is downloading. If something wasn't on your computer and now it is, you've downloaded it, whether or not it gets saved to disc. Unless I'm mistaken, mpv uses youtube-dl (by default) or avideo to stream. If it is using avideo, it shouldn't be able to stream anything avideo can't download.

Im fine with no gui package manager, however, as of yet I am not comfortable with installing without a gui. Maybe it's time for me to get comfortable? Re: [Trisquel-users] Testing The Trisquel 8 Upgrade Process
The amd64 ISO of December 24th works great. I am currently typing from the live system. I put it a USB pendrive (the FSF member card actually) using Trisquel 7's "USB Creator" (or whatever it is called). Although it looks stuck at some point (at 42% and at 99%, when creating the permanent file), it all ended well. It was written here that the ath9k_htc firmware was missing from the older ISOs. It was certainly true (I did not try these ISOs) but, with that latest ISO, my Wifi works out of the box. Some weird things in the ISO: Why is the ugly "Galculator" present since the "Calculator" is present as well? What is "Icedove -> Thunderbird" in the "Other" category?

Re: [Trisquel-users] Temperatures inside pc high?
Both macbook pro's where this happened were using jxself's kernel. Most likely lts, but I'm not sure.
[Trisquel-users] Re : Testing The Trisquel 8 Upgrade Process
The dysfunctional APT is apparently a consequence of me using ppa:ubuntu-toolchain-r/test: https://askubuntu.com/questions/777803/apt-relocation-error-version-glibcxx-3-4-21-not-defined-in-file-libstdc-so-6 I had that PPA (and all other external repository) disabled before the upgrade but I believe I should have removed all the packages coming from it. This morning I discovered that the versions 4.9.389-gnu, 4.9.40-gnu, 4.14.10-gnu (all from jxself's Linux-libre repository), 4.4.0-104 (Trisquel 8's default) or 3.13.0-137 (Trisquel 7's default) of the kernel would all "panic", even in "recovery mode". So, yes, it does not look I have options (such as those suggested in the page I linked above) but installing from an ISO. A warning for those using the "Ubuntu toolchain PPA" would be good in Trisquel 8's release notes, I guess.
[Trisquel-users] Re : Temperatures inside pc high?
You must do something wrong. Copy-paste the commands you executed in a terminal and their outputs.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Temperatures inside pc high?
Ah, cheers! :) But right now the fans started and I checked also and they running firmly at 4000 ca rpm, so fans are good. Check.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Temperatures inside pc high?
If you have 'lm-sensors' installed, then just typing 'sensors' in any terminal prompt should show you the temperatures and fan speed. If not, then there may be a PATH issue.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Temperatures inside pc high?
I installed the lm-sensors through the package manager, but I can't seem to find it anywhere in the menu. I also tried to rund it from alt-F2 and from the terminal, but with no luck. Yeah, I think I'm going to try the new kernel, because my fans were working properly before I switched. But the site that MagicBanana linked didn't help me unfortunately, unless I misinterpreted the procedure.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Temperatures inside pc high?
Do you see your typo there? That's why.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Temperatures inside pc high?
Tried to follow the instructions there and on the first command I got "E: Invalid operation eidt-sources" :/
Re: [Trisquel-users] Temperatures inside pc high?
What does the fan speed show as if you use the 'sensors' command (with the lm-sensors package)? If the machine is hot and the fan speed is very low or zero then, if upgrading the kernel doesn't improve it, it's possible that your fan may be faulty. I believe they can be replaced - I got a replacement for my Macbook 2,1 fan from ifixit.com. They may have a replacement for the newer model.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Temperatures inside pc high?
Good idea :-D
Re: [Trisquel-users] Temperatures inside pc high?
When I type "lsmod" int he terminal, it does indeed include applesmc. But the fan thing you mention is interesting, because when you mention it, I think I have not heard the fans at all since I switched. So you might be on to something there.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Temperatures inside pc high?
Interesting. I wonder why they would run hotter under Trisquel than Parabola? I assume Parabola uses the same Linux-libre kernel that Trisquel does. Perhaps it's a kernel version thing? With Paraboala's rolling distribution, it's probably using a newer kernel than Trisquel and maybe they've improved the support for more recent Apple hardware. Would be good to try one with Trisquel 8 and see if it is any better. Maybe the OP could try booting a Parabola live USB and let us know if it improves?
