Excellent! Thank you so much for the tips. And that is a great idea about
running the upgrade on a second hard drive. I am going to do it that way to
be on the safe side. Cheers :)

So you installed the beta image, or one of them.

Does the system actually let you log in? Or do you boot into into a root
terminal (maybe using a recovery mode menu entry you enabled in
/etc/default/grub)? Or maybe you use 'chroot' from a live system?

I would try try that command:
# ecryptfs-recover-private /home/li/.Private

Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8 upgrade problem - help required

2018-05-24 Thread ben

Hi Steve-O,

I'm doing an upgrade today too and hit the same issue with Software Updater.
The alternative to using Software Updater is to perform the upgrade from the
command line. Which I'll explain below. This is no less safe, but upgrading
always carries some risk, so if this system is important to you, you *must*
be prepared in case there are problems. An approach I recommend is to buy a
second hard drive and get an appropriately skilled person to clone your
existing system onto that drive. Then you can swap in the new drive and
perform the upgrade on it, leaving the old one intact in case of problems.

First use Software Updater to ensure that your Trisquel 7.0 system is
completely up-to-date.

Then open the Terminal program and update the package references to Trisquel
8.0:

sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

In the editor, replace all references to "belenos" with "flidas" (try Search,
Replace in the menu). Save and close the editor. Then update your packages
list with:

sudo apt-get update

Then perform the upgrade with:

sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

That will busily download and install all the packages, taking quite a while.
When it's completed you'll need to reboot your machine. Now you're running
Trisquel 8.0!

Regards,
Ben

[Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8 upgrade problem - help required

2018-05-24 Thread stephen . biggs

Hi,

Trying to upgrade to Trisquel 8. I used the 'Software Updater' under 'System
Settings' which tells me that "The software on this computer is up to date.
However, Trisquel 8.0 LTS is now available (you have 7.0)." So I click
'Upgrade...' and authenticate, click 'Upgrade' again on the Release Notes.
Then there's some messages about rewriting 'sources.list' ("No valid mirror
found" and "Generate default sources?") but I don't care about that so I just
click yes. Then I get stuck! The error message is as follows:

"Error authenticating some packages. Continue?

It was not possible to authenticate some packages. This may be a transient
network problem. You may want to try again later. See below for a list of
unauthenticated packages.

linux-image-generic"

How can I get the upgrade to work please? Also, please provide "safe"
instructions as I really don't want to have to restore my system from backup
(possible if necessary but not preferred) as that might be tricky if the
system won't boot!

Many thanks in advance,
Steve

P.S. Trisquel 7 is great BTW! Thanks :)

I do remember being able to install Thunderbird at one point when Trisquel 8
was in beta, so perhaps you installed Thunderbird before that issue was fixed.

I go to extensions menu/page (about:addons) go through the pages looking
for HTTPS Everywhere, right-click on the link that is in its name, tell
Abrowser to open it in new tab and I'm redirected to corresponding page
in trisquel.info website. From there I click "Install extension", it
asks twice for permissions (one for authorizing trisquel.info to provide
that extension and other for the specific permissions that the add-on
needs) and then its successfully installed.

Huh..

When I uninstalled it through synaptic package manager it disappeared.

So no, I am not able to install it again.

And when I try

$ sudo apt install thunderbird

I get the thing you have guys have been talking about:

"Note, selecting 'icedove' instead of 'thunderbird'"

But why I had the package in the first place... I have no idea. I think maybe
because I installed from a relatively old T8 image and updated afterwards.
Instead downloading fresh image.

Yeah, you've got it. Of course OpenGL can be implemented in software too (and
it is as a backup in Trisquel; this is done through MESA), it's just slower
that way. Testing is the only way to find out whether any given game will run
properly on your machine.

Glad to hear the new version is playable! :)
