[Trisquel-users] Thinkpad T400s vs T420
Hi there, I recently was able to install libreboot on a Thinkpad T400s and also coreboot on a T420. My question is, which computer should I keep as my daily driver? I like the fact that I could use libreboot but at the same time, the T420 is more powerful than the T400s.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Gaming console type controller to use on desktop?
Yes, and also pay attention to manufacturing quality. Some controllers have terrible buttons and bad d-pads are sadly extremely common. I'd steer clear of Logitech, unless they've changed recently. I've owned two controllers from them, and both of them eventually just stopped working after a couple years. And Logitech's customer service is terrible. If it weren't for that, I'd recommend the Logitech F310, because it was fantastic before it just stopped working all of a sudden one day. Maybe worthwhile if you treat your controllers like garbage, but otherwise I'd look at something else. Other than that, definitely pay attention to reviews.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Cannot log in (guest or not)
Brilliant move! Sometimes the best ideas are right there in front of you.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Cannot log in (guest or not)
Thank you comrades for your help. I solved the problem doing the following. In the screen that I am stuck (log in screen) I invoke a terminal (C+M+F2). Then I do apt-get clean, autoclean, check, update, and everything else that seems to purify my system. Then I reboot and everything is perfect.
[Trisquel-users] Re : Cannot log in (guest or not)
You can try to repair the filesystem mounted at /home from a live system (for instance Trisquel's installation medium), without actually mounting it. If that filesystem is /dev/sdaX (where "X" is a number and "a" may actually be another letter if /home is not on the first disk) and is of type XFS (Trisquel's default), you can try: $ sudo xfs_repair /dev/sdaX If that is not enough: $ sudo xfs_repair -L /dev/sdaX
Re: [Trisquel-users] UNetbootin Installation
Have you tried Etcher? I prefer Etcher. https://directory.fsf.org/wiki/Etcher#tab=Overview Even has a nice CLI interface with most of the features of the GUI.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Cannot log in (guest or not)
"I powered off my machine, abruptly, by holding the power button." That's not a good idea. "Is there an open session?" Probably more like corrupted files. "What can I do?" Maybe try not doing that in the future. :) Hopefully you have a backup.
[Trisquel-users] Cannot log in (guest or not)
Today I edited some audio with audacity. But it was taking too much time so I powered off my machine, abruptly, by holding the power button. Upon restart, I cannot log in or do anything useful with my computer. I have three options when logging in in terms of desktop environment: MATE, i3 and i3 debug mode. I have tried both entering the password for my user and using a guest session with the 3 desktop environments mentioned above and the result is the same always: the same screen of user authentication is provided. What can I do? Is there a problem because I didn't log out appropriately before? Is there an open session? How could I reinstall the OS maintaining all the files?
Re: [Trisquel-users] UNetbootin Installation
exactly, pardon for that
Re: [Trisquel-users] UNetbootin Installation
The USB drive should be unmounted before writing with dd.
Re: [Trisquel-users] UNetbootin Installation
I came across the Libreboot project's instructions on how to prepare a USB Drive in GNU+Linux (https://libreboot.org/docs/gnulinux/grub_boot_installer.html#prepare-the-usb-drive-in-gnulinux), and I noticed that they slightly differ from those described here. Why is that?

It's an advanced input method system originally designed for Chinese, and can input all sorts of crazy scripts given any arbitrary keystrokes. I think someone has even made a keyboard layout for ancient Egyptian. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intelligent_Input_Bus > "IBus doesn't seem to have the layout you were > talking about." > > How can I check? - Alt+F2 - Type "ibus-setup" - Run - Input Method - Add - More... - Greek, Ancient - misuochi - Add You may be able to find an input method online that matches what you want. This guy seems to know what he's doing, and uses X11 instead of IBus, but it's an old article, and it doesn't work on GNOME and other desktops that have stopped using X. https://frame-poythress.org/keyboard-entry-of-polytonic-greek-and-bibli cal-hebrew-in-gnulinux-2014/ If it doesn't exist anywhere, you can give me a description of the desired input and output, and I can make a layout for you. > "7. Yeah, I saw it there, but not in IBus. Very strange, since GNOME and other modern desktops are using IBus in the background now.
Re: [Trisquel-users] UNetbootin Installation
Etcher has privacy issues and in-app purchases. DD is easy to use, so that would be my recommendation under most circumstances. https://trisquel.info/en/forum/trisquel-8-codename-flidas-release-candidate-ready-testing#comment-130420
Re: [Trisquel-users] UNetbootin Installation
Before running dd, always run "sudo lsblk" to see which device file corresponds to the USB storage. If you have difficulties in using command line interface, try some GUI programs that respect your freedom. e.g. Etcher, which is recommended by FSF.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Xiphos won't install and question about IceCat
That did it! Thanks!
Re: [Trisquel-users] UNetbootin Installation
Fedora Media Writer would be the best solution. https://github.com/FedoraQt/MediaWriter FMW is able to write any ISO to USB. It works under GNU/Linux, MacOS and Windows.
Re: [Trisquel-users] UNetbootin Installation
Yes, I was about to mention that this thing may happen. So, try dd program :) this is what you need: sudo dd if=/path/to/image.iso of=/dev/sdX bs=8M;sync where image.iso is your fedora[someting].iso, or how are they named. And /dev/sdX is the name of your device. One of the ways to find it out is to run this command: `lsblk` Have fun!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Weird output when trying to update
Thanks Chaosmonk and MB, it seems to work now :)
Re: [Trisquel-users] UNetbootin Installation
If you think you need UNetbootin rather than the default startup disk creator, download a binary copy and execute it. Check "allow executing as program" first (right-click, properties, permissions). https://unetbootin.github.io/linux_download.html Then run in terminal './unetbootin-linux64-661.bin'.
Re: [Trisquel-users] UNetbootin Installation
Thanks for your explanation. "But don't you want to use dd?" I'm concerned that I might, by mistake, delete the wrong disk. If I'm unable to create the live USB via a GUI, I'll try the command line.
Re: [Trisquel-users] UNetbootin Installation
I tried the "Trisquel GNU/Linux (GUI: graphical user interface)" method. The issue is I cannot open the Fedora ISO in the "Startup Disk Creator" program.
[Trisquel-users] Re : UNetbootin Installation
https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/how-create-liveusb gives instructions for any live ISO.
Re: [Trisquel-users] UNetbootin Installation
Hello, Aristophanes. This package was removed, since it contains a list of distros that don't respect users' freedom (software that does not respect Free System Distribution Guidelines). As you can see here, it was fixed, and the fix is FUSBi program which does what is recommended (changes or removes the list of distors available -- I've never used that program). But I discovered that it is unmaintained. In fact, I can't even download it from the project's website, and it's not in Trisquel repos either. While browsing threads, I found this, hope it will help you :) here is that discussion. It seems that there are no binaries around, so you will need to build freenetbootin, as written in README. But don't you want to use dd? Fedora in its ~clear~ form contains proprietary software, to be noted. Have a good time!
[Trisquel-users] UNetbootin Installation
I'm running Trisquel 8. I'm trying to install UNetbootin via the "Add/Remove Applications" program. Whenever I click the checkbox to install it, the program hangs seemingly indefinitely, and I have to close it. What is causing this issue, and might there be a better way of installing UNetbootin? FWIW, I'm trying to create a Fedora LiveUSB, hence my attempt to install UNetbootin.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Gaming console type controller to use on desktop?
Allright, I understand :) So I should mainly focus on the cheapest/coolest/best fit in my hand, and not so much on the features? :)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Gaming console type controller to use on desktop?
Gotcha :)
Re: [Trisquel-users] free software to remove DRM from Adobe ACSM format
From what I can gather, an .acsm file doesn't actually contain a ebook. It just contains a link that Adobe Digital Editions uses to download an ebook from Adobe's servers. I don't think that a free software program could download the ebook unless it was capable of making itself appear to be a copy of Adobe Digital Editions. That ebook *would* have DRM, and there might be free software capable of removing it, but I can't find any free software that can download the ebook in the first place using the .acsm file. signature.asc Description: PGP signature
Re: [Trisquel-users] Xiphos won't install and question about IceCat
It looks like running bleachbit with "URL history" selected in the "Icecat" section deletes "~/.mozilla/icecat/.default/places.sqlite" which is the file containing your bookmarks. To avoid this, deselect "URL history" before running. signature.asc Description: PGP signature
