Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel GNU/Linux ----> Trisquel GNU/Linux-Libre

2018-09-20 Thread onpon4
The GNU/Linux naming controversy has nothing to do with "talking about
freedom". It's about giving credit to the GNU Project. The FSF maintains that
Ubuntu, Fedora, Linux Mint, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Debian, Gentoo, etc are
all properly "GNU/Linux" systems and should be referred to as such.

I personally actually think that the controversy is silly at this point,
though I did side with the FSF at first. The reason I think it's silly is
because despite what the FSF and RMS suggest, people don't inform their
perceptions of things on their names in any real capacity. When people in the
mainstream think "Linux", they think "that operating system that geeks and
websites use" (or something to that effect; exactly what they'd describe it
would depend on their technical knowledge).

The only sense in which a name matters is when a name causes confusion. Case
in point: "open source". There is a real misunderstanding in the mainstream
that "open source" is about source code availability, when it's much more
than that. That's why I do encourage a clearer term for that: "libre
software". (But not "free software"; that term has its own problem that
causes real misunderstandings.)

But when it comes to the reputation of a thing, or what people think about
it, the name is almost entirely insignificant in the long run. Just to prove
my point, consider the term "asbestos". Hearing that word makes you think of
cancer, an evil industry, etc, right? Well, "asbestos" was an industry
propaganda term, coming from an ancient Greek word that means
"inextinguishable", propping up the benefits of the material. But when the
general public finally understood just how harmful this stuff is, "asbestos"
became a really nasty word, so much so that modern pro-asbestos propaganda
often prefers to use the term "chrysotile" (a name for white asbestos, the
most common kind).

So when it comes to the operating system typically called "Linux", I don't
think it's accurate to say that people see that name and assume the whole
thing was done by Linus Torvalds. Most people probably don't even know the
name "Linus Torvalds", and for those who do, they associate him with Linux
more because he allows himself to be associated with it, than because his
name is similar to its name. I think if the FSF were to proudly exclaim that
it played a key role in the development of "Linux" (rather than insisting on
"GNU/Linux" and explaining a bunch of technicalities), the FSF would have a
whole lot more influence on things than it currently does.

Of course the concern about confusion arises too, but in practice, I've never
seen anyone who was confused by the use of the term "Linux". Most people
understand Linux and Android to be different things, and when talking about
the kernel, the term "Linux kernel" is almost universal (the kernel is even
hosted on the "kernel.org" domain, rather than "linux.org" or something
similar).

Overall, I don't care what term you use, but I think bickering over what to
call systems in this particular category, which most people call "Linux", is
unnecessary. Personally, I typically say "Linux". If the topic of the FSF
were to come up, I might point out that the FSF "really started Linux" or
"made a large part of Linux". I don't see much point in mixing in confusing
explanations of why "Linux" is really not the most perfect term.

Thanks for helping me identify me initial error :)

Current output of: cat /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ring-nightly-main.list
deb https://dl.ring.cx/ring-nightly/ubuntu_16.04/ ring main

However, after a number of tries, I noticed I keep getting this error:

Then, just on a hunch, I tried it again without the --fix-missing ... and now
it's installed!

Cool :)

Make sure tha you only have this line :

deb https://dl.ring.cx/ring-nightly/ubuntu_16.04/ ring main

in : /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ring-nightly-main.list

Remove the old 18.04 repo if it is present to avoid errors message in the
future.

If apt no longer says you have broken packages, and if
/etc/apt/sources.list.d/ring-nightly-main.list now says "16.04" instead of
"18.04", I don't think you need to do anything else.

Yes, tt seems like I accidentally followed the instructions for 18.04,
instead of 16.04. I tried again, following the 16.04 instructions, and it
seems to be working now. Is there anything I need to do to undo the things I
did when I followed the wrong set of instructions?

Hmm. Perhaps this is a case of user error? ;-P

If I have accidentally followed the instructions for 18.04, instead of

Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel GNU/Linux ----> Trisquel GNU/Linux-Libre

you shouldnt need both "gnu" and "libre." just call it "gnu," or just call it
"linux-libre." either of these names serve the purpose of talking about
freedom in the name. (linux-libre explicitly, or gnu implicitly, which is the
whole purpose of keeping gnu in the name in the first place.)

davidpgil:
> "I was wondering if there is some form of start date or initiation action

Step 1 was to agree on a name. There was an announcement some months back
that a name had been chosen, and development started:

https://trisquel.info/en/trisquel-90-development-plans

> "I'm particularly interested in decentralizing the development so it is
somehow easier for everyone to contribute."

Me too. There was some discussion in that announcement of what the Trisquel
devs have been doing to set up new dev infrastructure, partly to make it
easier for more people to contribute. I see you'd already read that
announcement though, since you commented on it at the time ;)

I can understand why the Trisquel dev team are hesitant to speculate about
release dates. If they say "we hope to have it out by date X', that is likely
to be treated as a promise by some impatient end uses, with much wailing and
gnashing of teeth resulting if the target isn't met.

But it would be great to see some kind of roadmap for roughly what has to be
done on each Trisquel release, in what order, expressed as a series of
stages. That way, all that would need to be done to keep the user community
updated is a short notice (a post on a fediverse account?), with a link to
that roadmap, saying something like:
"Trisquel X update: All stages completed up to Stage 3. Stage 3, 4, and 5 in
progress now."

chaosmonk:

Does anyone take any notes at these meetings? Or at least logs? If so, is
there a place on the website they are posted, so those who can't attend can
read them?

Installed Ring, using the same method for Ubuntu 16.04 at
https://ring.cx/en/download/gnu-linux

These instructions (minus the one referring to "universe") worked on the
experimental install I did on a USB stick. But I did a fresh install to the
internal drive yesterday, and it's not working.

Here's what I did:
* fresh install on Flidas on internal drive
* sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade
* sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
* autoremove, autoclean, clan
* followed the instructions at the link above for installing Ring on 16.04

Here's the output I got back:
