[Trisquel-users] trying to install required software for MIT opencourseware
Hi, I am trying to install software for he MIT's opencourseware Introduction to Algorithms course. I installed pypy from the repositories. I was not able to find the distribute_setup.py file as the website, python-distribute.org, seems to no longer exist. Any ideas? https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/electrical-engineering-and-computer-science/6-006-introduction-to-algorithms-fall-2011/syllabus/software/
[Trisquel-users] Re : Leaving Trisquel over systemd Concerns, Fantastic Project Otherwise, Thanks
Sorry for the misunderstanding.
[Trisquel-users] Re : Additional drivers
The default kernel has the driver for nVidia video cards, by default. The free software driver, of course. If you face problems, you can try a newer version of the kernel, taken from jxself's APT repository for Linux-libre: https://jxself.org/linux-libre/
Re: [Trisquel-users] Additional drivers
Ubuntu's "Additional Drivers" are proprietary. By definition Trisquel exists to provide people with an operating system that only includes and proposes free software: https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.html
Re: [Trisquel-users] Leaving Trisquel over systemd Concerns, Fantastic Project Otherwise, Thanks
i really doubt your freezes are due to the libre kernel. its possible a video driver is messing you up, so i wont say dont check this, but i doubt thats what it is. i am just going to guess it is your gpu acting up. ive looked around for information on your hardware though i keep mixing that up with calms hardware-- not yours. i have managed to run trisquel (today) without systemd, i thought i would mention that. not only without systemd, but without systemd in the live version. i have produced a live version that uses upstart. it does lose a few things in the process, such as gnome-bluetooth and mate. i use icewm. im not saying any of this will help your particular situation; we are not working on a lot of information about your setup here. (the more information we have, the more useful it is to us, though i realise you didnt come for tech support.) why tell you this? just to say "yes, trisquel does work without systemd." mostly-- i thought that the gui wouldnt load, but im about to make an update about that too.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Leaving Trisquel over systemd Concerns, Fantastic Project Otherwise, Thanks
Sorry one more thing. I installed the memtest program but I guess it needs to be run on start up. I have so many files open, i don't want to restart. I compiled GCC at the same time in two different terminals and downloaded 670 videos with youtube-dl at the same time as well. At the same time I was also surfing the internet and answering emails. I haven't had a crash in about a week. My hardware seems fine. However I haven't played a video outside of youtube for a week too, perhaps there is a link. Thanks
Re: [Trisquel-users] Leaving Trisquel over systemd Concerns, Fantastic Project Otherwise, Thanks
I am surprised that there were so many posts to this thread, lots of them very helpful I actually thought I should just fire off a quick email to the list to provide useful feedback as to why I was leaving. If everyone did this, it would probably help the project. Anyhow, based on the discussion here, I think it makes a lot more sense to look at the linux-libre kernel. I think I am going to install the regular one and give it a try for a while, while staying with Trisquel. I like the community a lot. I will report back in a month or two, hopefully things will be more stable. If they are not, I am not ready to give up on linux-libre, it would just be nice to know if it's the source of the freezes. I could file a bug report with them if it seems to be the source of the problem Thanks everyone
[Trisquel-users] Additional drivers
Hi to everyone! I have installed the Nvidia GeForce GTX 745 on a HP Compaq dc7600 desktop pc, but in Trisquel 8 mini I do not see in Software & Updates "Additional Drivers". Why? Thank you.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Leaving Trisquel over systemd Concerns, Fantastic Project Otherwise, Thanks
> Ah, okay. so it happens with bsd, unix and the rest? Of course. All operating systems have bugs at some point. You've seen or at least heard about the Blue Screen of Death, right? And I seem to recall RMS suggesting that the GNU Hurd had problems crashing; I never looked into that, but I have no trouble at all believing it. And not just operating systems. Every single program I've worked on has crashed at some point, and most have also had massive bugs that broke their functionality. Programmers are human. And when you have to compile together hundreds if not thousands of programs you had no part whatsoever in developing, or that might interface in ways you never considered, it's no wonder that sometimes the software fails and crashes every once in a while. But it's worth reiterating that this particular problem seems to have been a hardware problem, not a software problem. > Out of curiosity what is your favorite desktop environment? GNOME.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Minifree now selling libre routers with libreCMC preinstalled :)
Ah, thanks for clarifying. It is a shame though that you don't have a disributor to buy them from who lives in america to send them to you for a good price. :( I thought that was the case though.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Leaving Trisquel over systemd Concerns, Fantastic Project Otherwise, Thanks
Nope you misunderstood, I may have phrased it wrong though so let me be clear: My x200 froze quite a few times even when using Hyperbola, (Correct) When I said this however: "Systemd may or may not be the culprit" I was talking to the OP more than anything Sorry if I wasn't clear about this. I didn't think anyone would misunderstand that. ;/

Re: [Trisquel-users] Thinkpad x200 With Libreboot Ram 2x4
For the 4-series chipset based systems including X200, T400 and W500 series, you have to use 2R*8 4-GiB (SO)DIMMs (those with 16 chips, not 8). For frequency, the chipset supports DDR3-1066 (PC8500), but higher frequencies (PC10600 or PC12800) are also accepted. For voltage, the chipset supports 1.5 V, but most DDR3L (SO)DIMMs support both 1.35 V and 1.5 V voltages. So (theoretically) you can use the 2R*8 PC3L-12800 4-GiB SO-DIMMs in X200.
