Re: [Trisquel-users] extract rar file freely?
I have 15 years of ThinkPad hardware maintenance/repair experience (since in 2004 when I received my Bachelor degree). Such part/accessory information can be found in the hardware maintenance manual (HMM) for older ThinkPad models, but not newer ones. For more recent models (starting Nehalem or SandyBridge), the HMMs no longer contain a rather verbose "Part List" section. In some cases, you can't replace the WLAN card because of the whitelist restrictions, and you can't replace the firmware because of Boot Guard. Examples include models based on Haswell/Broadwell ULV processors. Rumor says that starting Skylake, ThinkPads no longer have whitelist restrictions. But I'm not interested in anything newer than Haswell (normal voltage).
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel + old radeon
"I don't understand how only radeon driver can cause such problems" Because, on newer kernels, the radeon module is known to fall over and die when the proprietary junk isn't present. You can thank the Linux kernel developers for that. And not necessarily for any good reason. In some cases Linux-libre changed the firmware loading to a conditional instead of an outright failure and it worked just fine. Although this may not be the case for all of them.

I think it's fixed in the version in Trisquel 8. The workaround was to omit the tilde during the setup wizard, then go add it in later. Ekiga works just as well though. signature.asc Description: PGP signature
Re: [Trisquel-users] how to call from JMP with Trisquel 8
I had the same problem. I had to not use the setup wizard to get around it. The ossguy who runs it seemed to know about that issue, but I don't know if there is any plan to fix it. I must say, this is really cool.
[Trisquel-users] Re : Trisquel + old radeon
If a user of this forum can help you, I would bet on jxself, who maintains that Linux-libre repository: https://jxself.org/linux-libre/
Re: [Trisquel-users] how to call from JMP with Trisquel 8
I had trouble trying to set up Linphone for JMP (it wasn't accepting the tilde in the SIP username), so I gave up and used Ekiga instead. Works like a charm.

I'm interested to know where you got this information, as this sort of thing is very valuable to know. Each laptop listed in h-node has a "wifi model" field saying whether or not the WiFi card works with free software. It also has a "does the device prevent installing wifi cards not-approved by the vendor?" field, to which the answer is usually "not specified," but there is no field for "do any WiFi cards approved by the vendor work with free software." I would love to have this knowledge for Macbook models and more recent Thinkpad models. signature.asc Description: PGP signature
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel on Arm? Pinebook Pro running Trisquel? Trisquel Touch?
Understood. Thank you for this clear answer.
Re: [Trisquel-users] how to call from JMP with Trisquel 8
> [User]~40[DOMAIN][AT]jmp.bwapp.bwsip.io > > Where [USER]=username, [DOMAIN]=dismail.de, and [AT]=@ To clarify why this is, dismail.de is only your XMPP provider, not your SIP provider. JMP is your SIP provider, which is why the domain after the @ is jmp.bwapp.bwsip.io. Since JMP knows you as your XMPP address, your entire XMPP address, including the [AT]dismail.de, is your username, but the @ has to become a ~40 since there should only be an @ before the SIP domain. signature.asc Description: PGP signature
Re: [Trisquel-users] how to call from JMP with Trisquel 8
It's working now, I had it configured it wrong.
Re: [Trisquel-users] how to call from JMP with Trisquel 8
Thanks again!
Re: [Trisquel-users] how to call from JMP with Trisquel 8

It should look like this [User]~40[DOMAIN][AT]jmp.bwapp.bwsip.io Where [USER]=username, [DOMAIN]=dismail.de, and [AT]=@ signature.asc Description: PGP signature
Re: [Trisquel-users] how to call from JMP with Trisquel 8
Thanks chaosmonk. I had to go reset my JMP password because I lost it. Now that's done but I am still having trouble calling through linphone. It keeps timing out whenever I try making a call. Linphone keeps saying: > Registration on failed: no response timeout I'm not sure why it is trying to "register". I set it up through the linphone wizard, which gave me the options of username, password, domain, and proxy. I filled it in with the values you mentioned with username=[USER] and password=[new JMP password], domain=[DOMAIN], and I left proxy blank. I'm not sure how I went wrong. Thanks for all your help.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel + old radeon
Thank you Magic Banana for suggestion. I don't think that using an old kernel is a very wise idea, although I've tried it. However as you would expect it gave me bunch of errors and did not mount the /home directory properly. The boot process dropped me into a terminal (recovery mode). I started X from there, but there was no option to suspend computer at all. And strangely, the graphics also didn't work well, I got VESA driver again. Booted back to original kernel then. I tried changing sleep modes in /lib/systemd/system/systemd.suspend.service and I have tried suspend (original), hybrid-sleep and hibernate modes - all of these failed the same. The computer actually suspends in suspend mode, power led changes from green to orange. When I push the power button it changes the color again, the cooler starts spinning, but there is a black screen and no inputs working, looks like the system just freeze. In /var/log/syslog I find no errors in the suspend process, but there is absolutely no log entries what happens after I wake up my laptop. I then do a hard power off and the next log entry after suspend is just a new boot process. Maybe you have other suggestions, more options to play with, maybe some specific logs I have to check? I'm still not giving up on this! I don't understand how only radeon driver can cause such problems. I did not did any more tweaks on this OS. Is this KMS/UMS related? It should be some solution, I believe it! Thanks
Re: [Trisquel-users] Abrowser update issues
I have similar faulty icons with some GNOME applications, but not with Abrowser. I think it's usually related to the default custom theme coming with Trisquel MATE desktop installation. You may try another theme in System > Preferences > Look and Feel > Appearance > "Theme" tab.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel on Arm? Pinebook Pro running Trisquel? Trisquel Touch?
Trisquel 9 is supposed to support ARM. "could it run on this specific laptop" I stopped reading when finding that it has a Mali GPU and also RTL8723BS for WiFi. Both of these need proprietary software, which Trisquel wouldn't provide. "would it be possible to dream of a Trisquel Touch, derived from Ubuntu Touch as Trisquel is derived from Ubuntu? Thus, we could finally have a free tablet (PineTab) and free pocket computer (PinePhone), couldn't we?" The PinePhone seems to use the same system-on-a-chip and so has the same problems.
[Trisquel-users] Trisquel on Arm? Pinebook Pro running Trisquel? Trisquel Touch?
Hello everybody, I've just discovered the announcement of the Pinebook Pro, https://forum.pine64.org/showthread.php?tid=7093 . Reading on the forum, in thread from 2012 and 2014, I understood Trisquel was not supporting arm. What about today? Maybe the coming Trisquel 9? Do you think then, if Trisquel could run on arm, could it run on this specific laptop, the Pinebook Pro that could easily become an affordable free daily working station. I have been lost in the reading and I didn't get if booting could be free (as libreboot for Intel CPU is). I understood that linux-libre would work on it as it works on the Pinebook (not Pro). If it's possible to have a free booting system, it could replace the aging ThinkPad X200... And then, I was wondering that if it works on Pinebook Pro, then would it be possible to dream of a Trisquel Touch, derived from Ubuntu Touch as Trisquel is derived from Ubuntu? Thus, we could finally have a free tablet (PineTab) and free pocket computer (PinePhone), couldn't we? With hope but no expectation, Thatoo

I use Linphone. $ sudo apt install linphone For SIP identity use [USER]~40[DOMAIN].d...@jmp.bwapp.bwsip.io where [USER]@[DOMAIN] is the XMPP ID you are using for SMS.
