[Trisquel-users] Trisquel instruction set architecture support: i386, amd64, arm, arm64, risc-v and open power?

2019-07-08 Thread je . eppler
What CPU instruction set architectures (ISAs) does Trisquel support today?
What instruction set architecture (ISA) will Triquel support in the future?

If I go to the download page today, I can only download images for Intel/AMD
32 bit or 64 bit CPU's. Are those the only two supported CPU ISAs?

Does or will Trisquel support ARM processors, either 32 bit or 64 bit?
Ubuntu, the distribution Trisquel is based on, supports at least ARM 64 bit.
Today the majority of new single board computer are based on ARM 64 bit. In
addition, the phone from Purism will run on an ARM 64 bit platform.

Does or will Trisquel support RISC-V in the future? Ubuntu 16.04 and 18.04
LTS do not support RISC-V. However, Debian, the distribution Ubuntu is based
on, does support RISC-V.

What about IBM's OpenPower architecture? Does or will Trisquel support
OpenPower (Power 8, 9 etc.) in the future? OpenPower hardware is available
for desktop users (See RaptorCS products: https://www.raptorcs.com/) as well
as Ubuntu supports it.

@jxself thank you for the good and in-depth explanation. I really appreciate
you taking time to explain it.

There is this PPA: https://launchpad.net/~deadsnakes/+archive/ubuntu/ppa

Well, I have never setup MySQL, contrary to several people here, I believe.
Was there an error message? If not, I doubt the problem relates to this
script.

You're stuck with either looking for an older version of Electrum that will
work with your version of Python or installing a new Python. Good luck.

Yes, you're right, and I have both python and python3 packages installed.

Let's say I want to install Electrum, after having downloaded it.

sudo python3 -m pip install --user Electrum-3.3.6.tar.gz[fast]
then I get back (among other things):

Processing ./Electrum-3.3.0.tar.gz
Complete output from command python setup.py egg_info:
Error: Electrum requires Python version >= 3.6.1...

The "..." is described above: sudo bash
/usr/share/doc/wordpress/examples/setup-mysql -n wordpress localhost

Can you help to figure out why I didn't succeed?

'sudo bash ...' executes the Shell script (in the "...") using the GNU Bash
interpreter and administrative privileges.

One caution though is to be careful reading through any guide that suggests
adding a repository / downloading software, so that you do not inadvertently
add anything non-free if your goal (since you are using Trisquel) is to keep
a free/libre system

And accordingly I install wordpress from trisquel's repo. Most guides include
downloading the tar. A few install from repo, for instance this one:
https://linoxide.com/ubuntu-how-to/easy-steps-installing-wordpress-on-ubuntu-using-apt-get/

It seems to work fine. After the final command sudo bash
/usr/share/doc/wordpress/examples/setup-mysql -n wordpress localhost I should
be able to 'start making [my] blog' when going to http://localhost/wordpress

But nothing happens!
I don't know what the 'sudo bash ...' command is supposed to do. If I am not
wrong (which I very might be) localhost will read the .html file in
/var/www/html but there is nothing in that folder which links to wordpress.
In the /var/www/ folder there is a folder called 'wordpress' (i.e. next to
the 'html' folder).

Any advise on how to make it work?

Transmission is working fine for me on Trisquel 8, so there must be some
difference between our systems which accounts for the problem. Some
things to try off the top of my head.

$ sudo apt purge transmission && sudo apt install transmission

Boot into a live Trisquel 8 session, update/upgrade, and see if
Transmission works.

Probably not. Better to troubleshoot here where there's better
visibility and submit a bug report when we have more information.
