You can try Trisquel 9 but be careful. Is there something specific you need  
beyond just "newer packages"? Because these packages in Trisquel 8 still  
work.

Is there a Trisquel unstable with newer packages similar to Debian Sid? I've  
tried to install Parabola for newer packages, but it's too hard and I'm  
afraid I'll brick my Bios if I start changing stuff in GRUB.

Just a fix: freeware != free software.
