Re: [Trisquel-users] What free software entusiastas think about piracy of digital media?
The danger of an opaque software development has been extensively explained. And this danger is amplified once you get on-line. Than the license can make things worse. Example: Company M sells an operating system used on at least 20% of computers going on-line. Someone discovers an issue and makes a patch. The license can let the discoverer push the patch and anybody willing to take the risk can install it. Or company M reserves the monopoly to patches. So developers from M have to acknowledge the problem, examine the patch, certify the patch does not do anything else and that the fix is going to break something else. This is the ideal. But the ideal takes time. And takes money. And the managers of M might decide the fix is not *that* important. Bottom line the user - client should take own decisions. Now moving from engineering to the purely creative part. Fonts. Movies. Books. Speeches. Music. Drawings. Cartoons. You name it. Making unlicensed copies is a disgusting gesture. Of course it does not compare with murder or rape. It starts at thieving and, when the author speaks against the act, it can go up to highway robbery. In all cases this is based on a profound disrespect for the author or authors. And that is disrespect on many levels. Going from the 'the author does not deserve a dime for that' up to the 'the author is too dumb to understand that work should be free'. I believe the scum have high jacked the argument. When Stallman has started the copy-left movement the World was heading in a terrible direction. And Stallman is considered by many a useless raving madman because in their stupidity they do not realize how things would have looked without the GNU licenses. The same way, the CC licenses were badly needed. Now going from the inability to share a work under the old copyright laws to calling liberation the act of not just stealing, but making a multiplication factory and thus a parallel business should be frowned upon by the community. Which is so hard now. As you can see from the forum, the community is infested with robbers who congregate here in order to justify how noble are their actions. And because I know some will rise the stupid argument of the poor student who needs works valued at a few times the sums needed to make a new sewage in the student's town, do not forget the libraries were invented long before the copyright and have coexisted peacefully up until the scum have started liberating others from their hard work. I see paywalls as a consequence to that and not a conspiracy.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Limited time offer - get Theme Hospital for free at Origin
Why do we have proprietary apps promotion on the Trisquel forums? Why is the confusion between gratis and libre encouraged? This thread should not exist here according to the forum rules.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Easy libre animation app
Guys. I asked about an easy libre animation. Somehow it has translated into who can use google?
[Trisquel-users] Easy libre animation app
I have read a very nice short movie script. We don't have the money to do a film - the crew, actors, hardware everything will be out of our league. But the script is lovely. So I thought to myself why not do an animation based on that script and release the resulting story so that the World can enjoy it too. It will be all about sharing. Yet, we are only two and our knowlege in production of animation is up to the average South Park fan. What do you know about this subject? Anything can help. Ideal would be libre software on top of Trisquel. What else can you share with us? Forums. Mailing lists. Online tutorials. Cheers!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Easy libre animation app
Pencil looks like long dead. No release in 7 years.
[Trisquel-users] flac2opus
What do you use to convert (and write the metadata at the same time) from flac to opus?
Re: [Trisquel-users] flac2opus
Ups. I have read the man page. Now I see that opusenc from opus-tools does read flac without a problem. Problem solved! As for recurent - find and for are two commands that can do miracles. Sure, a GUI would be good. But besides the regular two bit scripts that invoke gstreamer, there's not much in the repositories.
Re: [Trisquel-users] flac2opus
People should not assume anything. It should be written somewhere. Besides copyright is granted the moment something is published even in the US.
[Trisquel-users] harvesting emaill addresses from my archives
I have just located in some old backups some old old mail archives. Browsing through them would be a pain in the rear. So I have a need for some Icedove extension that could parse the newly added folders and fill up an addressbook with what it finds. Do you know anything that can do the job?
[Trisquel-users] Firefox and youtube-dl together
Has anyone made a tweak to click a link, right click on a webpage or anything and launch youtube-dl along with some switches and the link?
[Trisquel-users] Libre alternative to skype
That is also easy to use and easy to install on Windows.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Popcorn-Time wishes you merry gravmassssssssssss
Thank you. Very informative. Much better than the initial spam.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Use both eth0 and wlan1
You are right. Evolution is linked with the gnome-shell and gdm. But network-manager is fine to be removed. Sadly I have just read wicd is unmaintained.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Use both eth0 and wlan1
t8mf4nu6l...@canaglie.net: Wicd is available in the repos. I know. But doesn't that break gnome? Same as evolution and other packs without which gnome uninstalls.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Use both eth0 and wlan1
mjmhog...@gmail.com: you can only use either a wired or a (or several) wireless connections at the same time. Why?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Use both eth0 and wlan1
mjmhog...@gmail.com: because the networkmanager checks eth0 on startup first, then wlan0, and will connect only one of the two by default. however, there may be a way to change this, I don't know... So it is not a kernel limitation. It is a design flaw of Network Manager. An ugly tool that took years to have it working. Wicd used to be so much better and ligher. But it got lost in the translation somewhere.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Two or more wlan interfaces at the same time
mjmhog...@gmail.com: short answer: plug the usb wifi dongles into your computer, they should all show up in network manager (if they are supported) as wlan0, wlan1, wlan2 etc ...and yes, you can connect them all to your router, however, you won't notice any difference in speed etc, because each app on your pc can only use one internet connection and not several at the same time... h, maybe not such a short answer after all :) It is quite short. And quite clear. Next it is up to the app to bind to one interface or another.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Two or more wlan interfaces at the same time
mariox...@yandex.com: media between the devices. With 802.11 below 802.11n, the access point uses a single band between all devices, and the limiting factor is the analog bandwidth[1], so there's nothing to be gained by adding more But I have a 802.11n.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Two or more wlan interfaces at the same time
davidvarg...@mac.com: Me too, I prefer wired than wireless. I don't see why people spend thousands of dollars in a PC or WIFI, yet they prefer WiFi, yet WIFI HAS ITS OWN PURPOSE, just as Wired. In this case why are you high-jacking this thread?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Two or more wlan interfaces at the same time
shiret...@web.de: I don't get this. If you have an antenna which is too bad for receiving a certain signal, Please DO mark where is there anything about that.
[Trisquel-users] Garmin MapSource libre alternative
Garmin software is a pain to use with Wine. I have noticed there is OpenStreetMap which gives Google Maps like functionality. Only that I need something offline. What do you use? I'd rather not install extra packages like Java VM or mono.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Garmin MapSource libre alternative
Routing would be nice too.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Two or more wlan interfaces at the same time
shiret...@web.de: Well, you wanted to combine several wifi cards in order to improve your connection, didn't you? You are a moron.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Two or more wlan interfaces at the same time
mariox...@yandex.com: As a workaround you can reduce your NIC transmission rate with “sudo iwconfig wlan0 rate 1M” (To set wlan0 to 1 Mb/s). This doesn't affect the access point transmission rate, and the NIC should do this automatically, but it doesn't always happens as it should (There is rarely such problem with wired networking[1]). This may make the network faster because if noise/signal strength is the problem, there will be less packet loss. Do your own testing. I was thinking that Trisquel could use MORE than one network card. The bad signal is assumed by an idiot who high jacked the thread.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Garmin MapSource libre alternative
lovexd...@gmail.com: Do you need it on a laptop? I know OSMand on Android actually downloads the map for use offline. Sure. Trisquel all the way. Or else I would have not asked in here.
[Trisquel-users] oss-compat residual package
I have removed some of the packages I do not use on Trisquel. Everything cleaned well. Less oss-compat. I still have it on residual config. But mark for complet removal fails. (synaptic:12600): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_child_watch_add_full: assertion 'pid 0' failed dpkg: warning: ignoring request to remove oss-compat which isn't installed
[Trisquel-users] Which kernel?
I am using with success the repository of new kernels[1]. I recall the day when there were two kernels. One stable and one unstable. So now there are 3.10, 3.13 (both generic and low latency), 3.14, 3.17 and a 3.18. Debian still runs 3.2 I think. Can someone clear the mess? [1] http://linux-libre.fsfla.org/pub/linux-libre/freesh/
[Trisquel-users] usb0 is Ethernet?
I have discovered by accident that usb0 can be considered one with eth0. Okay. I usually do not use Ethernet. Even the module is blacklisted. Now I am lost with Network Manager (the one in Trisquel 7). I can not find a way to have settings for usb0 that do not conflict with eth0. Linux is about networking too. So it might not be unusual to have eth1 and eth2. What do you do in this case? In the GUI.
[Trisquel-users] Use both eth0 and wlan1
I run Trisquel 7. I have connected to a wifi router while at the same time I have tried to reprogram a second router. So one is on eth0 and has no Internet connection. The other is wlan1 and HAS internet. I use the regular Network manager and nothing. I have to use one connection or the browser gives an error. Is there a work around? In the GUI, please.
[Trisquel-users] Why wlan1?
I have a ThinkPad X60. Trisquel 7. There is usb0. eth0. Still, wlan1 and not wlan0. What is the explanation for this messed numbering scheme?
[Trisquel-users] Two or more wlan interfaces at the same time
I was wondering. I have a wifi card in the X60. I have a couple of usb wifi dongles. How do I make the Network Manager use two or three at the same time? They can be used for a slight increase of wifi output with one router. Or with two and point some trafic (the web) on one and the rest on the second connection.
[Trisquel-users] Macchanger
The Trisquel 6 macchanger used to give a new, probably, random MAC when used with -a. The macchanger included in Trisquel 7 keeps the last six chars. Meaning it changes only the first half, never the last half. What is the explanation?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Why wlan1?
Michał Masłowski: It might have previously used a different card. It wouldn't be nice if the numbers were determined by the random order in which the devices are detected, so the software remembers which MAC address belongs to wlan0 or wlan1. Other udev configurations make it name the devices after the physical PCI ports in which they are inserted. You might change this by editing or creating /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules. Yes! That was it. Thank you. And yes, it would be nice to have the unique identifier from Fedora.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Two or more wlan interfaces at the same time
davidvarg...@mac.com: Your WIFI it will connect one dongle or device one per, who ever logs first. 2or 3 at the same time will not work. Why? Isn't a wifi dongle just another network card?
