Re: [Trisquel-users] A company tracked 530 million mobile phones in Asia with drones

Phone security is a big issue these days.

My recommended solution is to get a wifi-only tablet for secure communiations
loaded with something like a combination of Redphone and Silent Text with a
good overseas commercial VPN and get a non-smart (flip) phone for voice and
text when you are driving or otherwise away from your wifi.

I don't think a smartphone is a good choice these days. If you are going to
pick one, Blackberry or Blackphone are probably the only reasonable choices.

I think you could try asking this question in the form of a bug report. That
way we might get an authoritative answer.

On the right hand menu there's an entry called 'issues'. There you can create
a new support ticket.

Exactly, ads are fine and all but they don't really need tracking on them
just for the sake of it.

So Cleiton-, are you gonna buy a phone now or not? Are you living in
Australia, East Asia or India or not?

Well, if you use a phone that has entirely free software, there won't be an
application to track you via battery, nor will there be ad-ware.

You could still be tracked via cell towers, though.

Replicant or the Neo900.

On the BBC news web site there is a report that you can be tracked just by
battery power use. I starting to think the only way not to be tracked by
mobile phone is not to have one.

While Replicant is a fully free system, some proprietary components that are
not part of the system, such as bootloaders, may still be executed (the
situation depends on each device). These proprietary pieces have access to
the data stored on the device. Hence, they represent a risk for security.
On telephony-enabled devices, if the modem is poorly isolated from the rest
of the device, it may also be able to compromise the data stored on the
device and apply software changes. source:Replicant FAQ
Nevertheless, a phone with replicant is as free as a smartphone can possibly
be these days.

My take on this:

Ads should be illegal in public space.

I'm personally OK with ads, to be honest.

But do I believe there's nothing more to it than ads?

Well, why should I?
