1) first, it would help in the way we could sell dvds and get some money for  
free projects (like what Blender is doing). Second it would get more popular.


2) As far as I checked, candy crush and co are making millions, why not try  
to get a part of the cake and especially giving to good causes, even free  
software projects directly.


3)That they just scratch an itch is right, but normally not every one is  
shouting ripoff especially if it has enough original content. Btw. we have  
already a minecraft "clone", also a Quake 3 arena, Doom, Monkey Ball (or  
where never Ball first), Super Mario, Super Mario kart and maybe some others  
too. Most things are copies.

We need to tackle the problems head on at the moment and then worry about the  
entertainment side of this at a later point when that is the most key issue.


We could make some money through selling dvds, and "normal" families would  
see our movement. Maybe I should write this idea to the Blender community.


But yes the other film Idea sounds cool too. Maybe I should write to some  
fsfe groups (and fsf fsfe directly) about it, they could help us with that  
idea.


It is a difficult field to really anticipate and there is a good chance that  
the efforts (mine as well if it ever goes anywhere) will just be ignored  
because of something bigger and more flashy comes along, the gamers of the  
world are a fickle bunch - their tastes can changes and sway very  
unpredictably.


First look at extra credit, they try to analyze it. Second we just need to  
get "big" youtubers to talk about it.See the game flappy.

Interestingly: Although I'm not the guy to develop things from scratch I
can make simple game mods. I've made simple mods for Minetest (which my
mate has the only copy of it, along with a permissive license for
everyone), but then again, they're just simple mods, or if they're
complex, then they're not so stable yet.

I've been thinking if there could be a game similar to Grand Theft Auto
1 or 2. I have seen a game called Street Arena (previously known as
Greedy Car Thieves), but it seems to have no source code and no license
distributed with it.

In 2009, a mate of mine (that I lost contact with), told me that Grand
Theft Auto 1 and 2 (including London 1961 and 1969) use a 3D environment
and 2D objects for the characters, cars, items and so on. However, if
you ask me how exactly they did so, or how could we do so, then you're
talking to the dumbest person when it comes to programming. :D

But well, back to my idea: I thought on creating a game like these I
just described above. But, I also thought on first making the "core" and
leave data assets like maps, models, sounds and so on for later on. The
ideia is to make the "core" act as some kind of engine with which more
games could be made on, and then make the "real game" as an example that
can evolve with time (preferably with mods), just like "minetest_game"
(Minetest default game) did.

I went to PAX AU last weekend (big hall of corporate marketing really) and I  
was surprised at just how little originality is left in the games industry,  
even the 'indie' developers just pushing out mostly clones of previous ideas.  
There is actually a fair bit of room for Libre games to make some head way  
simple due to their more open nature (open in terms of add-on not open source  
culture so much).


I am currently looking to see if I could start building some more simple yet,  
more time less game concepts (all 2D stuff). Essentially lay the ground work,  
by using existing tools so that others can build on top of that work. Making  
a great game that just happen to be libre is a tough task as game development  
is very hard at the best of times. But one that can work wonders as it can be  
a gateway to others as they can see what is possible in terms of the sharing  
and dynamics of the code.


It is a difficult field to really anticipate and there is a good chance that

Perhaps I'm being pessimistic, but...

1) How would 3D animated videos of fairy tales help libre culture? They'll  
almost certainly be just like (probably a little worse) than any other  
generic episode seen on kid's TV.


2) A free, multiplayer, libre game? Check. There are quite a few of these.  
(Not enough, IMHO) But I don't see how the charity-donation aspect would  
help, other than *maybe* spurring a short-lived five seconds of internet fame  
on Slashdot.


3) This "easy" effort will just lead to people calling the libre clone a  
rip-off. Then they'll just go back and play the original. The key is to make  
original, quality libre games. Clones just scratch a temporary itch, usually.
