Marketing is a powerful thing. We need more of it for free/libre software. A nice, shiny GNOME desktop entices users and gets them thinking about free software. Should I just have separate > laptops, one exclusively free and another non free out of necessity? I think this was asked just a few days ago. The answer is NO. When using Trisquel, you have to make a deliberate decision to install the software. The OS will not offer it to you. Polluting a free system is much better than using a proprietary system with even more proprietary packages installed. I once thought of getting a cheapo laptop with Windows 10 on it for "development purposes", to help build up-to-date Windows packages for free programs, and to curate a free software userspace for Windows that I could recommend to people and easily transfer over to Trisquel. Ultimately, I decided against it, because I realized small things in Windows might creep into my life and I would slowly find myself using Windows more and more. If possible, create another user account for the proprietary software, and only install it for that user. Do not install it across the system. This way, you have to step out of your normal desktop to use the software, and return back as soon as possible. Also, it has no access to your home directory. Canvas does not replace any applications one would normally run on their own workstation. It is a pure service, not a software substitute. The service runs on the organization's computer. Single individuals do not and should not change the whole organization's computing at a whim. However, the JavaScript sent to clients IS the user's concern. It runs on the user's computer and does nontrivial things. The benefit of the server software being free is that, usually, the JavaScript sent to users is (or can easily be) free. So, users can install and modify their own versions of the service's JavaScript, to make it better for themselves. -- Caleb Herbert KE0VVT (816) 892-9669 https://bluehome.net/csh

Re: [Trisquel-users] Best file system for storing devices to be used with Trisquel Flidas
Yes, ext4 for hard disks and ext2 for flash. And usually encrypted. For cross-platform unencrypted storage, I would like to avoid exFAT or NTFS. I have been thinking of using UDF, Universal Disk Format. It preserves all the features in a Unix file system, but is usable by Windows and macOS. I plan to use this for public files, such as movies and music. -- Caleb Herbert KE0VVT (816) 892-9669 https://bluehome.net/csh

[Trisquel-users] Optimizing Trisquel for Offline Computing
EndlessOS is designed to provide a good offline computing experience. What could be done to implement something similar on Trisquel? I'd like some things to update when internet is available, but for everything to generally work in offline mode, and for a good library of general information available on the computer's disk. Dictionary, encyclopedia, music, videos, etc.
