[tslug] RH 8.0 ISOs

2002-10-06 Thread Andy Linsenbardt

October 5, 2002

Hey, so I tried downloading and installing RedHat 8.0 off of Dr.
Bindner's server and the CDs do not check out as being complete. Has
anyone gotten it to work yet? I've tried reburning the ISOs with no
success and I have confirmed that my file size is the same as the
originals on Dr. Bindner's server...

Thanks!
Andy

I downloaded all the ISOs and have burned, checked, and used the first
two so far. They both passed the integrity check with no problems and
gave no hint of error during the install. Are you having problems
with all 5 of them or just one? I don't know about the last 3 yet but
the first 2 are fairly definitely ok.

I'm pretty sure I checked the MD5SUMs before I posted them. I
couldn't get the MD5SUM file from RedHat (since its mirror is
overwhelemed) but I did get it from a source independent from the
.iso files themselves.

It was signed by RedHat but as I'm not generally a member of the
RedHat community I don't know if the key is valid.

Same. I guess that means either something went wrong downloading
the files or with the burning. You can check the files by
typing (and comparing against the list):

$ md5sum *.iso

You can probably check a burned disk similarly, although I have
never tried it, with (it doesn't need to be mounted):

$ md5sum /dev/cdrom
or
$ md5sum  /dev/cdrom

This assumes /dev/cdrom is a symbolic link to the correct device.
You may, in fact, need to use one of the IDE deviceses like hdc,
sr0, or similar if that is not the case.

[tslug] Re: RH 8.0 ISOs

2002-10-06 Thread Andy Linsenbardt

October 6, 2002

Well, the md5sums all checked out and I reburned Disc 1. Lemme go
through the other problems that I've noticed that may compound the
issue... First of all, RHN is having issues reading through my list of
.rpms that are installed; along with that, it won't let me upgrade to RH
8.0. Also, I can't simply reformat with the new RH 8.0 discs because
when I get into Disk Druid to do the partition information, the system
locks. I can still move my mouse, but I can't click on anything, can't
go back, can't ctrl-alt-delete, etc.

So yeah, any other ideas?

Thanks!
Andy

I'd check to make sure that your CD-R is big enough. I've noticed
that the new Mandrake ISO's don't fit on 650MB discs. Some burners
can cause problems if the data goes too close to the edge of the disc.

[tslug] Re: RH 8.0 ISOs

2002-10-06 Thread Andy Linsenbardt

October 6, 2002

First of all, I've been burning on 700 MB blank Memorex CDs, so I don't
think that's the problem. Secondly, I'm currently running RedHat 7.3
with most of the updates; as I said earlier, I can't get all of them
since RHN is having issues reading my .rpm lists...

Could it possibly be my CD-ROM unit somehow? It installed RH 7.3 a few
weeks ago with no problems whatsoever, so I find that kinda hard to
believe, and the BIOS never has problems detecting it...

Anymore ideas?! Thanks for all your thoughts!

Andy

[tslug] Firewall Down?

2002-10-06 Thread Brandon Chisham

I was home this weekend and given Peter's message about recieving an
incoming mail; I thought that I would see if I could connect to my box. I
was able to connect to the webserver that I'm running, and to webmin (port
1). I also looked at my logs and saw some samba requests from well
outside of Truman's IP range, 128.134.7.186 message: (couldn't find
service c).
