Fox switching off their over-the-air signal only brings about the demise of network TV even faster, so I encourage the dumb f*ckers to make good on their threat. Networks are the ones using an outdated handbook for media distribution, and few are worse about it than Fox. I've simply been making House of Cards references, which I feel is a fitting salute. Last month, the Nielsen Co. started labelling people in this group Zero TV households, because they fall outside the traditional definition of a TV home. There are 5 million of these residences in the U.S., up from 2 million in 2007. I understand the point about wanting free content (I like free stuff too). I don't get the point about being tired of the 100+ channel universe (doesn't the online universe consist of many more than 100 channels?) or the point about timing their lives around network show schedules (a DVR costs the same as monthly access to Hulu+ or whatever, and frees you entirely from network schedules. I have not worried about what time a television show is scheduled in more than a decade). If you don't mind watching hot new shows a year or so after they first air (I often don't mind that) and don't watch much live sports (I do a lot of that) then I guess you could save money subscribing to Netflix+Amazon+Hulu (I guess that is around $30/month) and then pay for maybe $10/month of shows on I-Tunes to fill things out - you would still be under half of a premium package cable bill. And I know there are ways to watch many of these shows for free. So it makes sense from the perspective of wanting as much as possible for as little as possible.
