Unpopular opinion ahead: I don’t like Ten.

Don’t get me wrong, David Tennant is a fantastic actor. But I found his
characterization to be grandly self-centered, culminating in the final thirty
minutes of his final episode – after he’s been mortally wounded –
companion-gazing. I may have yelled “Just regenerate already!” at the TV.

I’m withholding judgment on Fourteen.

[TV orNotTV] If it's Thursday night, it's Philadelphia-Houston

2022-10-31 Thread Brad Beam
With tonight's rainout of Game 3 of the World Series (currently tied at 1),
Game 5 from Philadelphia will now air on Thursday - which is also the night
Amazon will stream the Eagles-Texans game from Houston.

Of course, the local markets have OTA coverage, but in both cities, it's the
Fox O So in Houston, football will shift to sister station KTXH (My).
Alas, WTXF is a corporate orphan in the City of Brotherly Love, so the
undefeated Eagles are looking for a place to bunk Thursday night.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Amazon Prime to Start Live Sports Talk Tomorrow

2022-10-31 Thread Adam Bowie
Of note - ESPN branding has now gone away from the UK.

While we still see ESPN and ESPN+ bugs in the corners of screens when
ESPN-originated sports are rebroadcast here, "BT Sport ESPN" has now
rebranded as "BT Sport 4" (1-3 already existed).

An unsurprising move considering the channel's upcoming merger with the
Warner Bros Discovery owned Eurosport.

(Sidenote: the US clock changes being out of kilter with Europe/ROW mean
things like Monday Night Football start at the slightly less unreasonable
00:00 rather than 01:00. Still amused that the Heavy Action MNF theme music
will forever conjure up 70s/80s Superstars for Brits of a certain age)

Not sure whether the “who cares” is hyperbolic, but there is a reasonable
argument to be made (being made by many) that Musk bought Twitter
deliberately to wreck it, just to amuse himself. But even if he is just
making a bad business decision, forcing people (in particular government
officials) to pay for verification will end the argument that Twitter (or
any social media) is a public utility.

Re: [TV orNotTV] When You Care Enough to Stream the Very Tackiest: Hallmark Channel Shows on Peacock

2022-10-31 Thread Jon Delfin
I have a perverse interest in Hallmark (used generically, encompassing
other sources) movies -- I like to watch the first few minutes of each,
long enough to know if it's too dreadful to continue. But sometimes there's
some combination of better-than-average writing and acting that makes me
watch further, as happens with this weekend's "Christmas Bedtime Stories."
It was unusually tight and honest -- until the last five minutes. To save
you time, here's what I posted to Facebook this morning:

Dear Hallmark, I watched "Christmas Bedtime Stories" last night. Thank you
for having the courage to tell a story about a woman who struggles to raise
her daughter on her own, three years after her Marine husband is listed as
MIA overseas. Her travails and her breaking off her engagement to the great
guy who's been her support in the interim were very well handled. And the
ending, when she suffers a psychotic break after hearing a news story about
a raid on an enemy camp where prisoners were being held and imagines her
husband has returned, was powerful.
What's that? He really did come back? He was in that camp, and, not knowing
it was an American rescue team, he escaped in the confusion and found his
way to an American embassy? And nobody in the military or government
contacted her to let her know he's alive? But they had the wherewithal to
give him a shave and a haircut and a new field uniform, and send him home,
where he could be standing casually, staring at a wall outside the
father/daughter dance, waiting for his wife to find him? Because he's some
sort of emotional sadist who thought it would be great to surprise her?
You must be so proud of this one.

I discovered belatedly that the movie was based on a story co-written by
Nancy Grace. Yes, that Nancy Grace. Not sure how much that connects to the
total sell-out at the end.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Visiting the Ed this week

2022-10-31 Thread Melissa P
Coincidentally, I have a ticket for next Wednesday's Late Show taping!

However, I'm on the fence about using it. I have tickets for musicals
Tuesday evening and Wednesday evening -- and was planning to try at TKTS
for a Wednesday matinee. I realized that if I go to a matinee, I probably
won't be able to make the Colbert line. Not sure what I will do. I wonder
what the latest is that I could make it to Colbert? For example, if the
matinee was over by 4:30, would I be able to make it?

Unlike the sitcom tapings I used to attend in LA where I was always one of
the few audience members wanting to ask a question, there were lots of
hands raised when I was at Colbert In July 2021. So, I had little chance
of being called on -- and I wasn't. Sorry, I cannot remember the question
I planned to ask. Or -- maybe it was my old standard (I've never been able
to ask). "What guest have you really wanted to have on and neither a staff
member -- nor you -- were successful in getting that person on the show?"

[TV orNotTV] Visiting the Ed this week

2022-10-31 Thread 'David Bruggeman' via TVorNotTV
Hello everyone,
I have tickets for Wednesday's Late Show taping.  I wanted to know if there
were any burning questions and/or advice that members of the brain trust have
for someone who's only done the L.A. based late night tapings.
Best,David

Re: [TV orNotTV] James Cameron rips Marvel and DC

2022-10-31 Thread Tom Wolper
I went to see the original in a theater with 3-D glasses because I thought
it was going to be the equivalent of seeing King Kong when it first came
out. I remember being underwhelmed. It always felt strange to me to see
other people get obsessed about the movie, going so far as to do things
like learn Nav’i. I have no interest in the sequels.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Quickie Review: Doctor Who - Power of the Doctor

2022-10-31 Thread M-D November
Clara was never my favorite companion, but I didn't loathe her as much as I
did, say, Rose Tyler. Her exit and Capaldi's final run as Twelve coincided
with the birth of my kids, and I don't think you need to be a Timelord to
figure out that shrieking Daleks and newborns don't mesh very well, so I
was in and out of that last series. Tuned in for Thirteen's regeneration
and first couple of episodes, but something about Chibnall's version of the
show just didn't agree with me or hold my interest. All that being said, I
still haven't forgiven RTD for his terrible treatment of Donna Noble (who,
along with Rory & Amy and Sarah Jane, belong on the all-time list of great
companions), but I'm willing to give him a shot.

The stunt-casting continues with the next Who episodes, airing in 2023,
which is the 60th anniversary of the show. At that point we are supposed
to return to regularly scheduled programming, as it were.

As for the continuity? They've been struggling with a big part of
those challenges since the end of Matt Smith's run, and did some serious
retroactive continuity during Whittaker's tenure. As one or two of the
other Doctors would say - timey-wimey stuff. The handwaving with this
latest development starts with the wardrobe.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Re: CW comics closeout continues: Stargirl” out

2022-10-31 Thread M-D November
IIRC, I believe "Stargirl" and "The Flash" were the only ones renewed for
22-23; "Flash" was set to end this season anyway, so no, I don't think any
of the Berlantiverse shows are left once "Stargirl" finishes its run.

Unrelated, there is "Pennyworth", which I think originally aired on EPIX
and moved to HBOMax for the current season. I don't think anything's been
said about its future, but given the way the winds have been blowing...

Re: [TV orNotTV] Re: CW comics closeout continues: Stargirl” out

2022-10-31 Thread Adam Bowie
As someone who doesn't watch them, does this leave *any* of the DC shows on
the CW still in production after this season? Or are the new owners getting
out of them entirely?

I'm curious because of the news that James Gunn and Peter Safran are taking
over the DC Extended Universe, and whether this cleaning up of CW series
allows them to tie the movies and TV offerings a bit closer? While DC has
always been happier to have outliers and alt-universe versions of their
heroes appearing elsewhere - Joker, The Batman - and I think many comic
book fans understand this as there have often been mini-series and one-offs
that reimagine superheroes ("What if Superman was a communist?"), DC has in
the past felt completely unhinged. Different execs were able to do what
they liked.

So while this is maybe not quite a clean slate, it might be getting that
way.
