The Bills-Chargers matchup will include a commercial-free fourth quarter

Of course, my first thought is… this means even more movies and TV shows will
be withdrawn from circulation in order for them to take tax write-offs to
produce the merger savings they promised to investors.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Warners wants to screw up Paramount, too

2023-12-21 Thread PGage
Rumors about this have been swirling for a while. The Puck News folks have
been discussing pros and cons of Zaz going after Paramount Global or its
parent company, National Amusements ( with corporate finance issues at
stake way above my ability to even pretend to decode), and the original
Axios story on this says that it still could go either way.

Of course WBD itself will likely eventually be breaking itself into pieces
and selling off to someone like Comcast. So this could be CBS and Showtime
merging with CNN and HBO and then with NBC (that is the merger that will
have real antitrust hurdles).

The Feds will have to sort through the competition issues, but really
consolidation in the television+streaming business at least (not so sure
about film production) is inevitable and probably desirable. I will be
happy to only subscribe to a combined Max+Paramount, rather than two,
hopefully with at least some net price break.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Peacock Leaving UK

2023-12-21 Thread Adam Bowie
To be clear, Peacock was basically a nothing-brand in the UK. It didn't
even try. I don't think I saw a single ad for it, and it was just a
slightly odd tile in Sky's system. I'm not even sure you could subscribe to
it outside of Sky. Show's like "Poker Face" weren't even within that tile -
just getting into Sky's main categories.

Last time I checked, and this was *months* ago, there were a sum-total of
just 15 series within "Peacock."

Comcast's big brands in the UK are Sky - historically a satellite delivery
brand, and the UK's largest pay TV operator (we're much more satellite that
wired for cable here) - and Now which is their streaming-only brand.

But while I'm sure Comcast marketing folk could explain to me why they
maintain the two brands, there's a vast overlap. You can down subscribe to
Sky just using streaming, which means that it mirrors Now. And they both
have the same undifferentiated offerings. Maybe Sky historically tied you
into longer contracts, whereas Now has month-by-month offerings like most
streamers. Peacock's awareness must have been close to zero here.
