[TV orNotTV] Fox Fall Annotated

2024-05-13 Thread Mark Jeffries
Two--count 'em--two nights of live-action scripted in the fall schedule, an
unusual move for a net that was saying before the strikes that unscripted
was the future (unless they owned the show, and I think you can figure out
what's coming)--here we go:

MONDAY:
8-9 p.m. — “9-1-1: Lone Star" (the view was that this show would join the
franchise mothership from Disney's 20th over at ABC, but I guess that's not
going to happen)
9-10 p.m. - RESCUE HI-SURF--John Wells is not exactly the guy you would
expect to do a new version of "Baywatch" (after all, his resume includes
"The West Wing" and "E/R"), but here it is, set in Hawaii on the infamous
north shore of Oahu. Yes, the actresses are well-endowed, but so are the
men. Fox co-produced with Wells' home at Warners. BTW, this will be Fox's
post-Super Bowl attraction.

TUESDAY:
8-9 p.m. — “Accused”
9-10 p.m. — MURDER IN A SMALL TOWN--Considering that this title or
something like it has been used for a lot of shows, including a Fox reality
shows, we'll guess it might get changed. It's produced in the Great White
North (but no Canadian net yet) and based on L.R. Wright's Karl Alberg
novels, it's about a former cop (Rossif Sutherland, Keifer's brother and
Donald's son) who moves to a small town to get away from it all. Nice try.
Kristin Kreuk of "Smallville"'s also in the cast, co-produced by Fox with
Canucks Sepia Films.

WEDNESDAY:
8-9 p.m. — “The Masked Singer”
9-10 p.m. — “The Floor”

THURSDAY:
8-9 p.m. — “Hell’s Kitchen”
9-10 p.m. — “Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test”

FRIDAY:
Replacing "Smackdown!", for those who like sport there's sport (college
football/basketball, UFC)

SATURDAY:
And for those who don't like sport, there's more sport.

SUNDAY:
7-7:30 PM — NFL Overrun
7:30-8 PM — The OT / Cartoon reruns
8-8:30 PM — The Simpsons (is it the last season for the Disney-owned
show--again?)
8:30-9 PM -- UNIVERSAL BASIC GUYS--A cartoon about the Hoagie brothers,
victims of automation who are getting $3,000 a month in a basic income
program and need to prove they're worth it. It's already been renewed for a
season (WTF, Fox?) and is from Fox and Sony, with Fox-owned Bento Box doing
the animation.
9-9:30 PM — Bob’s Burgers (see "The Simpsons")
9:30-10 PM — Krapopolis

Mid-season sees the return of "Family Guy" (see above), "Animal Control,"
"The Great North," "Grimsberg," "The Cleaning Lady," "Alert: Missing
Victims Unit" and these new shows:

DOC--An Americanization of an Italian series of the same title, where the
great Molly Parker ("Deadwood," among other shows) plays a chief doctor at
a Minneapolis hospital who has just had memory of the last eight years of
her life erased and must now try to regain it. Sony's producing with Fox,
the format is owned by Fremantle, who has been trying to seriously shake
off its reputation as a game show and reality house lately.

GOING DUTCH--Denis Leary is back as a loudmouthed army colonel who as
punishment for things he shouldn't have said is reassigned to an obscure
base in the Netherlands with a Michelin-star commissary and the only
fromagerie in this man's army. And the base commander is his estranged
daughter. In-house one-camera sitcom.

EXTRACTED--What sounds like a "Survivor" ripoff, the gimmick here is that
the contestants are not in charge of their destiny, but isn't that what
usually happens in post? From Sony and Fox.

THE REAL FULL MONTY--D-listers bear all for charity in this one-shot
inspired by the film and musical and originating from a 2017 show in the UK
that I assume Adam never saw. In-house, one of the producers is Anthony
Anderson, who is also participating. As a noted television Monty used to
say, big deal.

And I assume the usual game show and unscripted suspects may pop up during
the year (most of them produced in Ireland). I guess Kimmel's back tomorrow
to do his annual smackdown at the ABC upfront.

[TV orNotTV] Fox Fall Annotated (Finally)

2023-07-11 Thread Mark Jeffries
It's no surprise with the SAG-AFTRA a near certainty that Fox's fall lineup
is almost all unscripted (covered by a separate pact with SAG-AFTRA that
expires next year--oh boy), with the exception of the long lead time
Animation Domination Sunday. Here we go:

MONDAY:
8:00--Kitchen Nightmares--it's been a while since Gordon Ramsay's second
American series has been on Fox in first run, although reruns are
inescapable on the FAST streamers.
9:00--Special Forces: World's Toughest Test

TUESDAY:
8:00--Celebrity Name That Tune--which means that Jane Krakowski and Dawg
must be on the plane to Ireland by now.
9:00--I Can See Your Voice

WEDNESDAY:
8:00--The Masked Singer
9:00--SNAKE OIL--A "Shark Tank" knockoff where the panel of rich people
have to figure out whether the pitches they receive are legit or fake.
David Spade hosts, Will Arnett is a producer.

THURSDAY:
8:00--Hell's Kitchen
9:00--Lego Masters

FRIDAY:
8:00--WWE Smackdown!

SATURDAY:
8:00--College Football

SUNDAY:
7:00--NFL Overrun/The OT
8:00--The Simpsons
8:30--KRAPOPOLIS--The Dan Harmon ancient Greece animated sitcom that's
already been renewed for two more seasons finally makes its premiere with
an hour episode on Sun Sept. 24 following NFL in all time zones. Owned
entirely by Fox, with Fox-owned Bento Box doing the animation.
9:00--Family Guy
9:30--Bob's Burgers

[TV orNotTV] Fox Fall Annotated--But No Schedule!

2022-05-16 Thread Mark Jeffries
As the "9-1-1" franchise and "The Resident" are still on the bubble, there
is no fall schedule at Rupert TV's upfront that will be held later this
afternoon. (although they claim they would be doing it even if those shows
got renewed). However, there are shows announced and here they are:

DRAMAS:
MONARCH--Delayed from mid-season, it's another country music soap, with
Bernie bro Susan Sarandon and actual country star Trace Adkins playing a
Johnny-and-June country music royal couple with lots of secrets and that
well-known Irish s--tkicker Anna Friel playing the young upstart daughter
who will do anything to take over the DIN-asty. Completely Fox in-house.
ACCUSED--An Americanization of the BBC crime anthology from the defendant's
point-of-view from "24" and "Homeland"'s creators and "House" creator David
Shore. Michael Chiklis stars in the pilot and will direct an episode, as
will Marlee Matlin and Billy Porter (the Fox PR spells it "Billie," but I
assume it's the Porter of "Pose"). Sony and Fox own the show.
ALERT--A procedural about the LA Police's Missing Persons Unit from the
creator of "The Blacklist," with "Beat Shazam" host Jamie Foxx as trophy
producer. No stars announced, from Sony and Fox.

ANIMATED COMEDIES:
GRIMSBURG--Jon Hamm voices a hardened detective with a dysfunctional family
in a small town. He's one of the producers, from Fox-owned Bento Box.
KRAPOPOLIS--Dan Harmon's back on network television with a cartoon look at
ancient Greece with Brit voice actors, including Richard Ayoade and Hannah
Waddingham. Ayoade is King Tyrannis, Waddingham's his mother Deliria, and
other characters include Shlub, Stupendous and Hippocampus. Bento Box is
doing the animation and we'll see how long it will take for Harmon to start
fighting with Fox.

UNSCRIPTED:
GORDON RAMSAY'S FOOD STARS--The face of Fox (next to Homer Simpson and
D-list celebs wearing masks) adding another show to his other four current
shows (I'm counting "MasterChef" and "MasterChef Junior" as two separate
shows). This time he's shouting at a group of business types trying to
come up with new restaurant concepts. From his company, which is now owned
by Fox.

And there will be a four-night Christmas edition of "LEGO Masters."

Tomorrow, it's Disney/ABC, with Jimmy Kimmel's annual shower of middle
fingers to the television industry.

[TV orNotTV] Fox Fall Annotated (!)

2020-05-11 Thread Mark Jeffries
This week would've been upfront week if not for COVID-19. It would be
assumed that no network wants to put their schedule in stone until they
know when they can go back to nore-or-less regular business, but Fox claims
it has a "pandemic-proof" fall schedule, with two scripted shows that were
announced last year showing up in the fall rather than getting the expected
summer dump amongst the reality shows and some cable pickups. Here it is,
as listed by the Wrap--new shows--as in they haven't aired yet--in all caps:

MONDAY
8-9 p.m. — L.A.’s Finest--The televersion of the "Bad Boys" movie franchise
ran last year as a VOD attraction for Spectrum cable subscribers, so this
is the first time it's actually being seen by a national audience. Will
producers Sony now be trying to sell their reboot for Spectrum of "Mad
About You" to NBC?
9-10 p.m. — NEXT--As we wrote last year, "After unwittingly developing an
AI system that could doom mankind as we know it, Roger Ster--uh, John
Slattery tries to shut it down, but is kicked out of the high-tech company
he founded by his younger brother. He then joins up with "Special Agent"
(of what, unknown) Fernanda Andrade to bring his creation. Manny Coto of
the "24" reboot's the creator, from 20th."

The "9-1-1" franchise will be back in mid-season.

TUESDAY
8-9 p.m. — Cosmos: Possible Worlds--the sequel to Seth MacFarlane and Neil
DeGrasse Tyson's reboot of the classic Carl Sagan documentary series just
finished its run on National Geographic Channel a few weeks ago.
9-10 p.m. — FILTHY RICH--As we wrote last year, "Televangelist Eugene
Monreaux (Gerald McRaney) is allegedly dead, wife Kim Cattrall is running
the ministry and the family is circling like vultures at all of that
tax-free money. Based on a New Zealand series which may be currently
running on Hulu (which doesn't have the Christian TV angle) and no relation
to the early 80s Linda Bloodworth-Thomason soap parody with Delta Burke and
Dixie Carter. Produced by 20th and Imagine."

WEDNESDAY
8-9 p.m. — The Masked Singer--The fourth cycle for the palm-slapping
reality comp is scheduled to be shot in August with consideration for
social distancing, which probably means that they're shooting without an
audience but with canned response and insert shots of audiences from
previous years. Considering that for the last three gorounds the studio
audience is sent home before the low score is announced and the mask goes
off (but not until they shoot them doing the 'TAKE IT OFF!" chant) and the
"audience" for the current after show being Fox employees on Zoom
supplemented by canned laughter...
9-10 p.m. — MasterChef Junior--Shot and completed before the shutdown, the
grownup version, which usually airs during the summer, was stopped
mid-production.

THURSDAY
7:30-8 p.m. ET/4:30-5 p.m. PT –Fox NFL Thursday Presented by [Phone Company
That Isn't AT]
8-8:19 p.m. ET/5-5:19 p.m. PT — [Trucks] Kickoff Show
8:20 p.m. ET/5:20 p.m. PT — Thursday Night Football Presented by [Version
of Crappy-Tasting Beer That Isn't as Crappy-Tasting as Original]
Above subject to change.

FRIDAY
8-10 p.m. — WWE’s Friday Night SmackDown--in production at McMahon's
Orlando production center, thanks to a Republican governor who considers
sports entertainment "essential," however, it is the lowest-rated show on
Fox in the last 20 years after the premiere of "American Idol," considered
the network's entertainment game-changer.

SATURDAY
7-10:30 p.m. — Fox Sports Saturday (college football, boxing, some sort of
MMA since ESPN now has UFC, whatever gets back in action).

SUNDAY
7-7:30 p.m. — NFL on Fox--If there is a season.
7:3-8 p.m. — The OT/Fox encores
8-8:30 p.m. — The Simpsons--Long lead times and animation can be done under
social distancing, even, I assume, in South Korea. Considering the whole
Alf Clausen brouhaha, one wonders if this will finally be it for the show.
8:30-9 p.m. — Bless the Harts--Same as above about lead times.
9-9:30 p.m. — Bob’s Burgers--Same as above. It's now in OTA syndication,
but since New Fox owns production house Bento Box they may want to keep it
going.
9:30-10 p.m. — Family Guy--Same as above and considering that MacFarlane
seems not to want to work for New Fox OR Disney (which now owns the
series), it may be time to close up shop after this season.

"Duncanville" will be back mid-season, along with a season of "Hell's
Kitchen" shot last year and intended for this summer. The cartoons "The
Great North" (which was first announced last year) and "Housebroken" will
show up eventually, along with this just-ordered multi-cam sitcom:

CALL ME KAT--Mayim Bialik's back in an Americanization of the BBC series
"Miranda" (which left the air five years ago and is on Hulu here), about a
middle-aged woman who runs a "cat cafe" in Louisville and finds herself in
awkward situations. Darlene Hunt is adapting the original series, Swoozie
Kurtz, Cheyenne Jackson and Leslie Jordan

[TV orNotTV] Fox Fall Annotated

2019-05-13 Thread Mark Jeffries
The first schedule of the new, no-studio owned, not the primary money-maker
of the company Fox (headed by Charlie Collier, whose dad Chet was Roger
Ailes' mentor at Westinghouse and had positions at CNBC/America's Talking
and Fox News until his death in 2007) has changes all over the place, the
most noteworthy the presumed symbol of New Fox on hold to mid-season and
the actual symbol of New Fox challenging "Survivor." Scheduled as listed
in The Wrap, new shows in all caps:

MONDAY
8-9 P.M. — “9-1-1”
9-10 P.M. — “PRODIGAL SON”--Greg Berlanti's umpteenth series is about a
psychologist (played by Tom Payne) whose dad was a notorious serial killer
known as "The Surgeon," giving him a unique insight into the criminal mind
(and an assist to detective Lou Diamond Phillips). Michael Sheen and
Bellamy Young are also in the cast. Berlanti's home Warners produces, with
New Fox owning a piece of the show.

TUESDAY
8-9 P.M. — “The Resident”
9-10 P.M. — “Empire”--On a new night on what could be the last season, if
the whole Jussie Smollett becomes as disastrous as it seems (no indication
if he's coming back).

WEDNESDAY
8-9 P.M. — “The Masked Singer”--That's right, folks, the most ludicrous
reality show ever will be back for TWO cycles going against "Survivor"
head-to-head. Will the CBS eye blink? By the way, New Fox is now
producing the series in-house, kicking out international format owner (for
South Korea's MBC) Endemol Shine (run by Rupert's daughter
Elisabeth)--showrunner Craig Plestis is staying on, so his Smart Dog Media
vanity card will still be seen).
9-10 P.M. — “NOT JUST ME”--This new show from "Friday Night Lights"' Jason
Katins is the story of a girl (Brittany Snow) who unbeknownst to her has
100 brothers and sisters by the sperm of her fertility doctor father
(Timothy Hutton). Along with two of those offspring (played by Megalyn
Echikunwoke and Emily Osment), she learns to adjust to her new life and the
quirks of her newfound sisters. Produced by Universal with New Fox
part-ownership.

THURSDAY
7:30-8 P.M. ET/4:30-5 P.M PT- “Thursday Night Football” pregame show
8 P.M. — NFL Football

FRIDAY
8-10 P.M. — “WWE’S SMACKDOWN LIVE”--Back on OTA TV from USA and on its
third OTA network (four if you count MyTV). You know the format.

SATURDAY
7-10:30 P.M. — “Fox Sports Saturday: Fox College Football”

SUNDAY
7-7:30 P.M. — NFL on Fox
7:30-8 P.M. “The OT” / Fox Encores
8-8:30 P.M. — “The Simpsons”
8:30-9 P.M. — “BLESS THE HARTS”--As Fox's longstanding Sunday night
cartoons are nearing the end for-real-no-kidding, here's a new animated
series from Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (and produced by 20th-Century
Fox Television, now part of Disney and producers of the three series that
are now nearing their end) created by Emily Spivey about a poor-but-proud
southern family. The voice cast includes Sikula's honey Kristen Wiig, Maya
Rudolph, Jillian Bell and Ike Barinholtz.
9-9:30 P.M. — “Bob’s Burgers”
9:30-10 P.M. — “Family Guy”

That's right--"Last Man Standing," the presumed symbol of New Fox, will be
back mid-season. Joining it:

DRAMA:

"9-1-1: LONE STAR"--New Fox thinks it has a new procedural franchise on
its hands (despite the fact that creator Ryan Murphy is now working for
Netflix), so here it is, about the first responders in Austin, the Texas
equivalent to Portland, with Rob Lowe (currently hosting Fox's game show
"Mental Samurai") as the recent transfer from NEW YORK CITY! Still
produced by 20th. Premiering after the NFC championship on Sun. Jan. 19
and airing on Monday nights thereafter.

'DEPUTY"--There's a new sheriff in LA, and Stephen Dorff's bringing Old
West justice to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department in what may be
one of the few police procedurals with a guitar-and-harmonica music score.
>From Canada's EOne (but shot in LA) and New Fox as part-owner.

"FILTHY RICH"--Televangelist Eugene Monreaux (Gerald McRaney) is allegedly
dead, wife Kim Cattrall is running the ministry and the family is circling
like vultures at all of that tax-free money. Based on a New Zealand series
which may be currently running on Hulu (which doesn't have the Christian TV
angle) and no relation to the early 80s Linda Bloodworth-Thomason soap
parody with Delta Burke and Dixie Carter. Produced by 20th and Imagine.

"NEXT"--After unwittingly developing an AI system that could doom mankind
as we know it, Roger Ster--uh, John Slattery tries to shut it down, but is
kicked out of the high-tech company he founded by his younger brother. He
then joins up with "Special Agent" (of what, unknown) Fernanda Andrade to
bring his creation. Manny Coto of the "24" reboot's the creator, from 20th.

COMEDIES:

'DUNCANVILLE"--The other hopeful successor to the long-running Sunday night
cartoons is this animated series from another favorite of Sikula Amy
Poehler and Mike and Julie Scully about a teenaged boy (voiced by Poehler)
with a rich fantasy life.

I'd put it on the bubble, but I'm getting burned out on McFarlane. I like
him and I like his style of comedy, but -- as with South Park -- a little
goes a long way for me. I can watch a handful of Family Guy and American
Dad episodes per year, after that, I lose interest. I'll try Orville, but
I'm going to try to keep my expectations low... it will not be GalaxyQuest.

[TV orNotTV] Fox Fall Annotated

2017-05-15 Thread Mark Jeffries
As listed by Nellie at Deadline--there's no mid-season schedule, perhaps
with the realization that someone else is going to have a certain 10-ton
gorilla next spring (new shows in all caps, ET):

MONDAY
8-9 PM — Lucifer
9-10 PM — THE GIFTED--Stephen Moyer and Amy Acker discover that their cute
little kids have mutant powers. That's right, folks, it's Fox's first dip
into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (of course it's related to "X-Men"),
Bryan Singer directed the pilot.

TUESDAY
8-9 PM — Lethal Weapon
9-9:30 PM — The Mick
9:30-10 PM — Brooklyn Nine-Nine

People were probably hoping for more of a change here, but social media
didn't save "Scream Queens" this year (Ryan Murphy has more time to spend
on his FX shows now).

WEDNESDAY
8-9 PM — Empire
9-10 PM — Star

Lee Daniels's block untouched.

THURSDAY
8-9 PM — Gotham
9-10 PM — THE ORVILLE--Seth MacFarlane does science fiction as the creator
and star (with Jon Favreau directing the pilot) of a drama about the
captain of an exploratory spaceship in the 25th century who has to deal
with the new first officer--his ex (played by Adrianne Palicki). Penny
Johnson Jerald plays the ship's doctor, fellow "Family Guy" voice actor J.
Lee is the ship navigator and Norm MacDonald is the voice of "a gelatinous
creature." OK. (BTW, it's up against the only hit new series of last
season, "This Is Us," which like this show and every other single new
series on Fox this season, is from 20th-Century Fox Television.)

FRIDAY
8-9 PM — Hell’s Kitchen
9-10 PM — The Exorcist

Because it's not a Fox schedule without Gordon Ramsay.

SATURDAY
7-10:30 PM — Fox Sports Saturday: Fox College Football

SUNDAY
7-7:30 PM — NFL ON FOX
7:30-8 PM — The OT / Bob’s Burgers
8-8:30 PM — The Simpsons
8:30-9 PM — GHOSTED--Craig Robinson is an alien buster (with the first name
of "Leroy") in this one-cam "action comedy"with Ally Walker as his boss.
9-9:30 PM — Family Guy
9:30-10 PM — The Last Man On Earth

A lot of people were calling for the breakup of the Sunday night comedy
block, but it's still there.

Here's mid-season shows so far:

COMEDIES:

LA TO VEGAS--From Gary Sanchez Productions, Will Ferrell and Adam McKay's
non-Funny or Die company, a one-cam about a cheapo airline that operates
between what the title says and the regulars who fly every weekend for
their opportunity to lose their shirts, with Dylan McDermott as your
captain.

DRAMAS:

9-1-1--What looks like a straightforward procedural about first responders
starring Angela Bassett, except that it's from Ryan Murphy and partner Brad
Falchuk, so there has to be something wacky going on in this show and
either Sarah Paulson or Lea Michele have to have recurring roles.

THE RESIDENT--The series claims that it will be a truthful show about the
state of our hospitals, but we'll see about that, as it follows three
doctors at various stages of their careers and their comely nurse, played
by Emily VanCamp.

ABC tomorrow--will Seacrest be showing up on stage at Lincoln Center for
another reason than with Kelly Ripa?
