Speaking of Jeopardy, one of my Facebook friends, someone I’ve known for years, 
recently announced that she will be on Jeopardy.

 

Only one thing surprises me about her announcement – her age.  She’s even a few 
years older than I am.  Is Jeopardy still doing a seniors’ tournament?

 

BTW she is absolutely one of the smartest, sharpest people I’ve ever met.  
Plus, she’s extremely personable.  She should do well on the show.

Yeah, I was scratching my head as that ending unfolded. She was in third, with 
less than half the money of the other two players, who wound up tied with each 
other.  So she had no chance of catching them unless they both answered 
incorrectly.  And they were both forced to bet it all, to keep up with the 
other, in case both answered correctly. #3’s only chance was to hope both of 
them answered incorrectly and lost all of their money, in which case her best 
option was to bet nothing…or at least don’t bet *everything*.

 

And sure enough, everybody played the odds and stuck with that scenario…except 
#3, so she was sent home along with the other two.

She could have made the originally scheduled taping date for her return, but 
then when they had to reschedule that taping due to Alex’s surgery, she wasn’t 
able to travel for that taping because she’d taken a job that conflicted.

I was getting Matthew ready for day care when I came across this, so I
didn't get a chance to research the previous incidents of the Triple
Squadoosh (PTI reference), though I remember the car wreck that was the
Teen Tournament Semifinal from a couple years back. But at least in that
case the three each brain farted differently.

We've had this discussion before, but I'll ask it again: how the hell do
you get on Jeopardy and not do *any* research on how to wager for Final
Jeopardy?

Obviously they have extra eligible contestants. But what happens if you get
the call, fly out, and you don't get drawn?

Incidentally, it hasn’t come up on the show since they made the rule change, 
but there is now a tiebreaker question if contestants are tied after Final 
Jeopardy! — yesterday’s show may be the last time there will be co-champions.

Ken Jennings wrote briefly about this in his first book, “Brainiac”:

“I’d forgotten this tidbit from the contestant orientation: all ‘Jeopardy!’ 
contestants are responsible for paying their own way out to California, 
including plane tickets, hotel and rental car, but if you have to fly out more 
than once (for example, if you keep winning), ‘Jeopardy!’ at least pays for the 
additional plane ticket.”

Technically, there were no champions yesterday: a player cannot win with a
score of zero.

Intriguing rule change.
