And the original format was based on the (at the time) shrinking attention
spans of kids. As I experience now in my classroom, the attention spans of
kids are longer now than they have been in quite some time. It makes sense
to tweak the format.

It should be pointed out that the new format won't kick in until 2025,
which would be after their current deal with HBO (with streaming on Max)
runs out. (The shows run on PBS nine months after the first HBO airing.)
Since the gentleman from the Sesame Workshop quoted in the link seemed not
to be happy with Daddy Zaslav's decision to take 200 past episodes off of
Max, I would guess that in 2025 for the new format they are either going to
go back to PBS completely or find another streamer-attached company for
first runs. Even though AppleTV+ is supposedly getting out of children's
programming, I would imagine that at least Netflix or Amazon would be
interested.
