~245 character (bytes?) DMs have been working for some time now,
through API methods.

I assume this is a temporary situation, but it is kind of handy :-)

There was, historically, some difference between what's in the mem cache
and what was committed to the backend store. I don't know what has changed
in the architecture since then, but I suspect this is part of the same
thing.

Someone just sent me a DM that has 841 characters. I counted the
characters after I fell of my chair and got back on it again.
