[U2] Universe on Windows login setup

2007-04-26 Thread Brian Whitehorn
perhaps have a basic program run from the logic proc that could check
@LOGNAME (the windows userid thats logged in via universe telnet), and
if its the vendor user then EXECUTE 'DOS' which will then take them to
the windows command prompt..

Brian.

RE: [U2] Printer problem

2007-04-26 Thread Paul Tykodi
Hi Pamela,

As Paul mentions, host based printers don't have any onboard intelligence
for executing page formatting instructions (no page description language
controller board is included in the device). They require an appropriate
printer driver to format application output for them. These drivers are
usually produced for desktop computers running a Microsoft Windows OS
product, MAC OS X, and sometimes for certain Linux distros.

In the case of this HP printer model, the Linux drivers can be found on
Sourceforge at http://sourceforge.net/projects/hplip/

To use a host based printer with Universe, you need to send reports to
another computer in the network, with the appropriate driver loaded onto it,
and then have that computer properly format the report before it is sent to
the actual printer.

Typically in Universe this can mean creating a raw printer with a script
tied to it that executes the necessary lp or lpr command or building a
remote printer description again using LPR as the delivery protocol.

I posted a message titled Re: [U2] [UV] Win 2K3 Printer setup
(Unclassified) into the forum on April 5, 2005, which explains how to
configure a Windows printer driver to accept input from UniVerse or UniData
and format the information into the target printer's language. I'll send you
a copy offline for your reference since you can't reach the archives at this
moment.

Best Regards,

/Paul

Pamela, the HP LaserJet 3600n (color) is a host-based printer and UniVerse
cannot to date print to host-based printers. I have seen this many times at
installations where host-based printers (many times a lower cost printer)
reside. And never have I been able to get the printer to respond past the
OS test print.

I do know the next model up the HP Color LaserJet 3700n will work at it is
not a host-based printer.

My experience with host-based printers.

Hopefully this hasn't been discussed before. I don't have access to my
local mailboxes to check (webmail'ing for now - yuck). We're having a
problem getting a networked HP LaserJet 3600n (color) printer to respond.
It's our first color printer. The manual says it works with PCL. We have
it set up as a raw printer just like all of our other printers. Linux can
print a test page to it and the user can print to it from their computer.
We just can't get there from UniVerse. Any ideas?

No we are looking at PCI DSS too

The Issuers are trying to get it in globally

I have a full spec if you would like it

Main problem we can see is the encryption, rest of it is pretty straightforward

RE: [U2] Off topic: PCI Compliance

2007-04-26 Thread Baker Hughes
As Bob noted, the DSS is a global initiative by the major card brands.

It is huge, and produces negligible ROI for all your effort, except it
protects your brand name, which is no small thing.

At least 1/2 of your effort is going to be other than in-house coding.
a) Reviewing / Re-writing business processes/procedures in light of the
standard. (Which will precipitate other code mods, not directly involved
in your PCI implementation)
b) Network scanning - initially and at regular intervals.
c) Attack simulation - test your defenses.
d) Response planning - in the event of successful penetration

And if you are a service provider, the ante is even higher (if you
process payment card transactions directly with banks, for others).

Although the deadline has passed, there are more non-compliant merchants
and suppliers than the PCI Council can bludgeon effectively.
That, according to what our compliance officer is reading. However, this
default mercy would naturally evaporate the second someone penetrates
your data security. (Fine$)

As for the encryption piece - it is reportedly easier with UV 10.2 but I
still have questions about key management.
Maybe someone who is on 10.2 or the UniData version that has
'Data-at-Rest' encryption at the database level, can respond and explain
how it works, and fulfills the PCI DSS requirements.

GPG provides the DES3 minimum requirement, and coming/expected AES
requirement. The UniVerse ENCRYPT and ENCODE functions (10.0 or higher)
are pretty good. Encrypt will do DES3 but won't handle key
certificates. I have a simple workaround for outstanding IBM issue 8088.
But these were only designed for 'Data-in-motion', not at rest.

HTH,
-Baker

RE: [U2] Off topic: PCI Compliance

2007-04-26 Thread Jeff Marcos
Hi Baker,

We too are looking at being PCI complaint. We have a Universe DB with
SB+ and running telnet sessions on the client side.

We're being told that the credit card data must be separated from the
application onto another database behind another firewall. This adds the
complexity of communicating with another database (non u2 product).
Encrypting the data was just not enough.

This is certainly turning into another Y2K (like) money spinner...

Jeff Marcos
