Laura, I believe Joe Chelston posted the have you ever heard of message,
not mrparkland. I assume Kyle Stetson was supposed to be a U2
developer/administrator, but for some reason Joe suspects that it was only
an alias, which is what led to the question. :)

 Hey Charlie,

 Thanks for your kind reply.

The thread from Address was on the topic, Has anyone
ever heard of Kyle Stetson? I was curious. Why *should* I
have heard of him... why would this question be of interest
 to the U2 folks?

But I felt silly addressing those questions to Dear
Address or Hey mrparkland.  Does Address have a
first name? Is mrparkland even a name?? This person has been
posting under this alias for a very long time - rarely, if
ever, identifying themselves. The same complaint recently
came up regarding FFT2001. I *knew* who this person was, but
why hide??? FFT2001 has also been posting for quite a long
time, rarely identifying himself by first/last name.

I think that a professional group such as ours is for those
who value the content of messages and the exchange of
thoughtful comments. And as such, folks should identify
themselves - at least in closing a message for goodness
sake. If one doesn't want to own their comments, then they
 shouldn't post them!!! I can't wait till I'm in a meeting
and am introduced...  Laura, I'd like you to meet
address and sitting next to him is fft2001. To me, *not*
identifying oneself by name is rude and inappropriate - at
least for this group. Just my .02 cents.

Thanks again Charlie for your kind message, and for
identifying yourself! g. Hope you are doing well!

 Hi Laura,

I don't think anyone is really trying to be rude. Forums
 tend to be a
bit less formal, and many people just dash off a note
 without
identifying themselves. I'm certain some deliberately hide
 their

 everyone

 My apologies

Re: [U2] PICK Systems Administrator position

2011-04-07 Thread Ron Walenciak
I've known Joe since the 90's and he does know what Pick is. I've worked
through him or on a job found by him twice in the past.

I agree that the database platform would be an interesting piece of the
puzzle. :) I'm guessing that he's coming at it from the point of view of a
Pick programming job, where if you know one pick you can probably work at
any other pick site (and it was nice of you to prod him into the right
direction regarding what a system admin would need to know.)

I'm also guessing that he knows enough about Universe/Unidata to be on the
right list. Or not, and at this point I'll let him speak for himself and
bow out. :)

 From:Joseph Chelston
I'm just trying to limit competition from other recruiters by
not
disclosing too much information on this forum.

I apologize if this is a problem for anyone. I'm just trying
 to find good
candidates and I know they are on this forum.

I would offer that at this point we don't even know if you're in
the right forum. Could you at least offer the identity of the
database platform hosted by your client? Seriously, if you said
contact me about a SQL job or I need a programmer don't you
think you'd get the same kind of response as you've elicited
here. The Pick industry is much deeper than you seem to know -
it's not all just Pick. You're not representing your client
well but this situation can be salvaged productively and perhaps
for you profitably.

Here are the main issues so far:
- We don't know what database your client has. It might not be
U2. You say PICK Systems which may actually be for a platform
called D3 from the company formerly known as PICK Systems.
- Lack of a website for BSGStaffing makes you look like a
scammer. Obviously you used to have some site and you have an
email server. Otherwise you personally have created a
credibility problem for yourself, but again this can be remedied.
- Asking for a system administrator is like asking for someone
who can use a pencil. We all qualify, so what are the
differentiators. Here are some skills that differentiate Pick
people: Java, .NET, System Builder, RedBack, FlashCONNECT,
Quibic, Temenos Banking, Avante/Dataflow/Manfact, Promax ...
Insert the name of any MV industry software package or
platform-specific tool.
- Knowing the software is one thing but a sysadmin who knows the
nature of the specific business is much more valuable than
someone who doesn't. Is this banking, retail, manufacturing,
pharmaceutical, a medical practice?

I could go on (as many here would attest). You've jumped into a
forum completely unprepared. Drop me a note and I'll try to help
you and your client to better craft your message - or at least to
get it to the right audience. Hopping into my business shoes
here, you're supposed to be providing value to your client and
you expect to be paid for it. I will be happy to send you in the
right direction on a pro-bono basis just to keep our colleagues
here from getting further annoyed, but if you want more help in
getting the right candidate for the position, I'll have the same
expectations of fee for service as you have yourself. You can
decide after some exchanges if you want to go in that direction.
If you don't know how to approach this market and you don't want
to get some help to do so, then I recommend you find a different
market to offer your services.

Good luck,

First Fft2001 Can we have your name. How do we know that you are not
someone from a competitor like Oracle trying to make Rocket look bad.

Secondly the focus on money is pointless. We don't need money we need
ideas. If anyone has a good idea and it needs some money from Rocket to
make it happen, then I am sure that Rocket will consider it. Rocket is not
like IBM who were sucking money out of U2 to push DB2, Rocket brought U2 to
grow the business and if you have any ideas that will grow the business they
will listen. Throwing money at a problem does not solve it. The board
have racked their brains trying to come up with ideas to touch base with all
users, if anyone has ideas let us know.

Thirdly the directors don't have the time to do everything that is required,
many hands make light work and we need more involvement of other users.

Re: [U2] Ultimate on a pc, was Pick History et al

2011-02-08 Thread Ron Walenciak
I was involved with a company that ran Ultimate on a pc. The pc used the
MSDOS OS to actually do the disk reads and writes, I believe, so there were
no compatibility issues (any hard drive that ran on the pc ran for us, too,
in a partition located on most of the disk.)

A friend of mine had a company that used them for store cash registers.
There was also a back-office pc in each store for stock receipts, etc, and
at night we pulled data from the stores using Ultilink, producing daily,
weekly and monthly reports for the companies involved as a service, and
pushed pricing and sku/size/color/description data down.

He had some nice customers, mostly women's fashions in outlet malls. Liz
Claiborne was one.

I believe it was a short experiment; as I recall, Ultimate felt that there
wasn't enough profit in selling a pc (and it was just about as time
consuming as selling a DEC minicomputer.)

Sorry, I know it's not U2, but I figured I'd follow the Ultimate thread.

I have gone through and changed all of the colors, but none of them seem

In our school, seniors had a mandatory half year drivers ed followed by a

That's all history now; budget cuts eliminated driver's ed a long time ago,

I was not trying to offend anyone with that remark but back in the day
typing was something that girls took and boys took shop. It was a fact
not an accusation. Although I think it would have been a great asset for
me today at the time it was hard enough trying to get through all of the
social pressures without creating an additional one of my own making.
Social norms change and today both genders do and should learn how to
type because most of the kids will go into office jobs. Back then most
men were likely to end up tightening a nut and bolt.
