[U2] Moving off of Universe

2009-01-15 Thread daverch
We came across this article in the Denver Post a few days ago:

Jewelry retailer Shane Co. attributed its bankruptcy partly to a new
inventory-management system that cost four times as much as expected and led
it to overstock, according to documents filed by the Centennial-based
company...The final blow to the company was a point-of-sale and inventory
management system purchased from business-software giant SAP for $8 million
to $10 million, which ended up costing $36 million and took three times as
long to implement. In the meantime, because it did not work entirely, the
system did not provide accurate inventory numbers and led to the chain being
substantially overstocked in the fall of 2007.

The abbreviated backstory is that the Shane Co ran software in the early
1980's on Prime Information. When Prime went out of business in 1988, they
ported their system to Universe. The Shane Co spent many years developing
extending those and other applications in BASIC. This software ran their
business successfully for over many many years. Management made the
decision to go the SAP from Universe and the result, as they say, was
catastrophic.

[AD]
Hopefully, you all have heard of XLr8Editor. This editor has been available
for free for 2 1/2 years now. We have over 700 licensed users. The client
runs on Eclipse.org IDE under Windows, Linux or MacOS. It uses UniRPC to
edit programs or data on Universe or Unidata. Unidata version support is
available from 6.1 forward. Universe support is from version 9.6 forward.

To mention a few of the many features:
1) It has the ability to show you differences on a line by line basis using
QuickDiff.
2) You can click on your include files and they will open another editor tab
window.
3) You can edit programs on any number of servers simultaneously.
4) You can compile or format using Alt keys.
5) All internal subroutines show up on the outline tab, allowing quick
movement to them.
6) Global search variables and replace variables.
7) Use either CVS or Subversion for source code control
8) Color code of keywords and comments

See our web site for more information at
http://www.u2logic.com/XLr8_Editor.html. Email me for special pricing
support options.

We just tried turning off telnet on our Redhat Linux UniVerse 10.2.4 test
server to see what would happen as we are going to be permanently turning
telnet off due to PCI requirements.

The connection to the server using the UniObjects to edit the program worked
just fine. I was able to connect in and open a program.

However, the terminal session connection fails. One half of the debugger
works, the editor. You just can't run the program in the debugger. Which
makes it a full screen editor instead of a debugger.

I'd have to agree, it is great for a free tool.

The lack of native support for SSH in UniDebugger (and Dynamic Connect) use
to be an issue for anyone who has a site that no longer allows telnet.

I haven't tried it lately, though - not sure if it has been updated or if
IBM still gives it away at all...especially after that issue about Dynamic

RE: [U2] static/dynamic file(s) opinions wanted!

2008-07-24 Thread daverch
[ad]
Hi HTH,

U2logic has created a resize plug-in for Eclipse IDE that surpasses their
functionality. We do not need any downloaded programs, directories or data
files to run. We do not license the product by CPU or number of Universe or
Unidata users. We license XLr8 Resizer by your individual workstation. We
use standard Universe and Unidata utilities to resize you files. XLr8
Resizer is was built on current technology (Eclipse 3.3 or 3.4 and Java VM
1.6). If you want to stick with something that was developed many years
ago, looks outdated, and is very pricey, then stay where you are.
Otherwise, go with the leader in U2 tools based on Eclipse technology:
U2logic.

We are a green software product.
1) Software is only downloadable via our web site.
2) The software has not paper output, everything is displayed in
Eclipse.
3) Our documentation is in PDF or Word format.
4) Payment for our software is Pay Pal which is paperless.

We would recommend that you download our package and see the differences.
Or at the very least, read our product information on our web site at
www.u2logic.com

Regards,
Doug

BTW: Our other plug-in's for the U2 environment are an editor, a dictionary
editor, an installer, an object editor, and a Web Developer.

In addition to the great info from this group (like Dan provides), this site

take some time to read the papers that they've provided. Also, they have an

RE: [U2] static/dynamic file(s) opinions wanted!

2008-07-22 Thread daverch
Symeon,

In today's world of faster and faster processors with more and more disk
space, we always use dynamic files for transactions based records and static
for code files or files that have little growth. We work in both Unidata
and Universe and find they both have drawback and pluses which would take
pages and pages to hash out the differences.

Resizing on static files if the are used as described above ends up being a
annual or semi-annual task. Dynamic files for Universe, we resize on a
bimonthly basis. Unidata files are resized on a monthly basis. We rarely
see a slow down in any of our client sites, since we are on top of our
clients file systems.

[ad]
Of course, we use our own resizing tool based on the www.eclipse.org tool.
It is the only new tool that resizes both Unidata and Universe files fast
and effectively. This tool supports multiple accounts and multiple
customers simultaneously without the need to download anything software on
their machines. You can run this tool from any machine that has Eclipse
installed on it. So if you like Mac's or Linux, and even Windows you can
use our tool.

We use dynamic files no problem - yes I suppose in certain circumstances
there is an overhead, but it would still be faster than a badly sized
 static
file. The conclusion we have is if you are really on top of your file
 sizes
and administrating things daily there is probably less need for dynamic
files. If however you have hundreds of accounts and files then dynamic
 files
are easier to admin and hence probably faster in the long term.

 hey all,
I have heard bad things about using dynamic files versus
hashed/static ones. Can anyone share any thoughts on which is better
(in particular on a system where the files grow at a fairly steady rate).

I always understood that dynamic files were best on files that did not
change that much that fast as the constant need to resize would
outweigh the manual effort of resizing the files manually (or with a
 program).

I am looking for insight (or where to find some insight) on universe and
best file practices (right now I am reading the system description

 so any thoughts/suggestions/ideas/comments are welcomed!

John,

We have a web based CRM system with notes, tasks and templates to create
tasks that fits the bill. It is based on new technology (Eclipse based
XLr8) and runs on either Unidata or Universe using Apache Tomcat and our
middleware called U2Weblink(tm). One of our clients uses the system to
collect monies that are generated on their telnet based system. We allow
imports and exports to the system. The system uses our before and after
image transaction based processing built into our XLr8 tool that allows
easier interfacing.

Are you making the move from being factored to trying to
doing your own credit and collections? So that you need to
track outstanding orders and compare them to outstanding invoices and
 the customer's credit limit?

Or do you already have invoicing, cash posting and an aging
system? And just want to track dunning your customers?
So that you want to keep an electronic phone log of who was called by
whom and when and which invoices?

 Roger

Roger, it's the latter. We want to automate the collections specialist's
process so she doesn't have to flip through screens and do research to
figure out who to call next. Unfortunately I don't have too many other
details at this point. We're still in the process of gathering user

RE: [U2] File maintenance Routine

2008-06-04 Thread daverch
Henry,

We have found that dynamic files on Universe need tuning ever now and then.
A simple RESIZE file-name * * * usually does the trick.

[AD] For those of you that prefer resizing with a tool, you can look at the
new Eclipse based XLr8 Resizer tool from www.u2logic.com. This economical
tool is not licensed per Unidata/Universe users but by work station. This
means, if you are VAR or a site with multiple machines you only license the
work station that will be doing the resizing. No more paying those
exorbitant fees for all of the database licenses when you need only one
copy. There are no accounts to load or software to catalog, just install
eclipse from Eclipse.org on your work station and follow the directions on
our web site to download the software into Eclipse and your are ready to go
fast.

But wait that's not all. You get an code Editor, Dictionary Editor,
Software Installer, and Web Developer too. All of these plug-ins are
included with you single download. Why are you sitting reading this?

[U2] New Resize tool for U2

2008-04-24 Thread daverch
[AD]

U2logic announces a new Unidata resize tool available on May 2nd called XLr8
Resizer. It will be downloadable at www.u2logic.com/update via Eclipse's
Update Manager. XLr8 Resizer will be out for Universe 2 weeks later.

XLr8 Resizer is built as a plug-in for the open source Eclipse.org platform.
This tool has been built from the ground up to run on Unidata. This tool
uses the native database programs to produce the data account by account.
There are no installation programs or accounts for either database meaning
you will be up and running fast.

XLr8 Resizer displays information in an easy intuitive way that allows
database administrators or even those with limited knowledge of the database
to see problem files. The tool allows constant feed back on what is doing
whether gathering statistics or resizing a file, you will always be
informed. This tool is smart enough to know the difference between static
and dynamic files when resizing. You can customize the calculations of new
modulos to match your environment or taste.

XLr8 Resizer does not require a large initial investment for the software
based on the number of database licenses. This tool is available on a
yearly subscription basis for a single workstation. Software updates are
available from our web site via the Update Manger in Eclipse and they are
sometimes as often as twice a week as we add new features and fix those
undesirable ones.

RE: [U2] mv.net versus Web DE

2007-11-29 Thread daverch
Martin,

We looked a mv.net and found the Windows platform very limiting and would
force us to use Visual Studio. We should know about limiting, our prior
tool ran only on IIS using ASP. There is the problem of pricing as well.
We have to buy a license for everyone of our machines and our customer's
machines.

We tried to use WebDE and found we needed help from IBM to get the software
working and it is totally a closed environment that required us to change a
lot of the code we had developed for RedBack. Additionally, WebDE is very
pricey, although all of our current Web clients already have a license. IBM
is updating this product only once a year. Not nearly enough to keep up
with changing technology and bug fixes.

With over 1200 data entry and reports developed with over 5 years experience
with RedBack. We liked the way our UI was no longer tied to
Unidata/Universe; it was based on the Web. We used RedBack to do most of the
work in reading, writing and deleting area. Additionally, we had hundreds
of Subroutines using RedBack to read and set RedBack object variables
including constructing reports totally in HTML.

We decided to embark on the technological journey to create our own
middleware. We picked open source where we could such as Apache's Tomcat,
jsonrpc.org and Eclipse.org. We picked UniObjects for Java for our
communication with Unidata/Universe with jsonrpc as the transport mechanism.
We built XLr8Developer and XLr8Object editor using Eclipse. Our code
generated out of the tools is pure HTML and JavaScript.

We are able to use all of our objects we had created with RedBack Designer
with the new code which saved us a lot of work. Our Subroutines required
very little changes. We replaced the sets and gets with appropriate
code and changed the Subroutines to accept arguments and that was about it.

Over the past year we have been taking applications (i.e. Document
Management, Customer Resource Management, Accounting, Payroll, Warehousing,
and Distribution) one by one and converting them to the new technology. The
process was not as bad as we thought initially. The programming was
relative easy since it was similar to what we were using. We added the
capability to change the base code on a continually basis without affecting
any custom code that you need to write. We have speed up the form loading,
selecting, and the like by over 300% in past few months.

The improvements and changes are very important in this web world. For
example, we have a client using Safari for Windows that is just in Beta 3.
We had to make a few JavaScript changes and regenerate all of the base code
and the client is up and running without a problem. Another example, is we
have run our entire Web software running without change on a iPhone. Wow,
we could not believe either.

If you have any questions you can email.

U2logic, Inc. the leading independent tool developer for Eclipse plug-ins
for IBM's U2 database has released a new version of its Editor and tools.
Version 1.2 of XLr8Editor is fully tested on Mac's, Linux (Red Had and
Fedora 7) and Windows. We have added many new features to this FREE tool
including dictionary editor and compiler errors are clickable to source
code. Those are just a few of the many enhancements and bug fixes.

XLr8 Environment and Tools is the only plug-in available for Universe and
Unidata that gets updated regularly, has full set of documentation, and
allows programmers to run the best of the breed on tools not from U2logic.
In addition to making this tool, we use it everyday and believe that our
productivity is second to none because of the features incorporated therein.

Please check it out at www.u2logic.com for download instructions.

[U2] New Release of XLr8Editor

2007-06-13 Thread daverch
U2logic is announcing the release 1.1.5.14 of XLr8Editor for Eclipse tool
set.

1) For Universe users we have added caching to speed up the loading of the
files the second time through. This is a clickable option on the
preferences window option.

2) We have a dictionary editor. You can edit or delete dictionary items in
a grid. This means you can see the entire dictionary set without having to
TCL command or the like. The grid has sortable columns allowing many ways
to view all dictionary items

3) The U2 database licensing requirements to run the XLr8Editor have been
reduced to a single user.

If you are not one of the over 1000 licensee's, you would need to know this
product is total free. Unlike some other editors, we are feature rich with
a complete tool set. XLr8 Tools and Environment consist of a robust editor,
installer, resize tool, object editor, project editor and a web developer.
No other tool allows you to add many other plug-in from other manufactures
of Eclipse based products.

This tool requires you to download from www.eclipse.org version 3.2.2 of the
tool set. Additional you would need to load from www.sun.com a Java JRE
less than 6.0. Currently, we do not support JRE from 6.0 above. And
finally from our web site, you can download the instructions to make this
all work.

Subject: [U2] RedBack Garbage Collection

Hi

Does anyone know why garbage collection could stop working on RedBack
(4.2.3), or how I can bring it back to life?

I have a client with state file that is badly undersized, with 160,000
sessions (and rising) in the LOADBAL.COUNTER. It is not (yet) configured to
use the WWSESSION file. It looks like collection hasn't happened since
February when there was a power failure.. despite RedBack being restarted
since.

Parameters in WWCONTROL GARBAGE.COLLECT are fine.

Thanks

Brian

[U2] [ad] XLr8 Editor Update

2007-04-19 Thread daverch
U2logic has released a new version of our free XLr8 Editor for Unidata and
Universe. Version 1.1.5.2 is available for download using Eclipse update
manager.

One of the new features is showing your compile errors with marks. For
example, on line 243 you have an error the editor shows you with a red X.
If you turn on Show differences in overview ruler you can then easily
click from error to error.

For those of you who have not tried our free editor, go to
www.u2logic.com/downloads.html for instructions on how to get the most
popular Eclipse based editor for Universe and Unidata.

Thanks,

[U2] [AD] Java and HTML/JavaScript Programmer

2007-03-06 Thread daverch
U2logic the developer of the RedBack replacement middleware called
U2WeblinkT announces an opening for a Java programmer. Since our middleware
is based on the open source json-rpc from the www.json.org
http://www.json.org/ , JavaScript programmer experience is required too.
This individual must have 3 years Java programming experience. Our free
tools called XLr8Editor, XLr8Object Editor, XLr8WebDeveloper,
XLr8ObjectEditor, and XLr8Resizer are totally based on open source Eclipse;
experience with that environment is a plus. Unidata/Universe experience
would be helpful but not required.

U2logic offers company paid health insurance, 401k and individual offices
for employees. Please contact me via email at [EMAIL PROTECTED] and send
along your resume.

RE: [U2] RedBack Scheduler

2006-12-19 Thread daverch
We have upgraded all of Universe sites to version 4.2.6 of RedBack and
Universe 10.2 and that helped a bunch. We have to restart the RedBack when
the system hangs once a week. We have found that rgwsched.exe is still
running when we try a restart. We manually kill that process so we don't
have to reboot. We now have the restart command as VOC item so we can
restart it from telnet prompt.

Because of these reliability problems and RedBack very costly pricing
structure, we, at U2logic, have written our own middleware that uses json as
the transport mechanism from json-rpc.org. We are able to convert RedBack
objects and all our Web and UniBasic code with minimal changes to this new
middleware we call U2Weblink. Currently its free on www.u2logic.com.

Subject: [U2] RedBack Scheduler

Greetings,

We're using Universe 10.1.11 and RedBack 4.1 on W2000 (Universe and
RedBack on separate servers). The RedBack Scheduler (which resides on the
Universe Server) dies occasionally for some unknown reason. The only way
to bring it back is by either restarting the Scheduler manually or by
rebooting both servers.

We tried to upgrade RedBack to 4.2, but that didn't help. Then, we
re-installed RedBack, but that didn't help either. Is there a possibility
that the Scheduler stops from a command from some application? If so,
please specify what type of a command it is.

If anyone experienced this type of a problem or can provide us with some
tips, then please respond.

Baruch
