[U2] [UV] SRDF from EMC

2004-09-02 Thread Stephen O'Neal
Greetings All!

http://www.emc.com/products/networking/srdf.jsp

If your installation is running this piece of software, would you please
contact me (either thru the list or off line)?

We have a client that is looking for references. On paper, looks like a
great product that should be used with UniVerse Transaction Logging for a
complete solution.

Have a Great Long Weekend!

Depends on how you're using it. We used to have a similar product from
Veritas that wasn't any use for U2 as it wasn't aware of the U2 file
structures so if the replication broke mid-update the file on the other
end was always corrupted.

IBM subsequently advised me very strongly not to do it.

[U2] [UV] SRDF from EMC with UV T/L

2004-09-02 Thread Stephen O'Neal
Adrian,

UniVerse Transaction Logging will solve the problem experienced with the
proposed HW / SW solution. It is imperative that the integrity of the file
structure be maintained. And yes, these products are not aware of the
internal file structure of UniVerse.

Being very nit picky, there is one point when a file can be corrupted
(broken)
+ extends for overflow groups on a static file or
+ dynamic files growing or compressing

At a high level, there are three writes that occur for these events:
+ forward pointer gets added to the current disk record
+ the backward pointer gets added to the added disk record
+ the header of the file is updated

Should any one of these three write not make it to disk - you have a broken
file. The most common reason is that disk writes can be held in the write
buffer cache.

UV Transaction Logging corrects this problem. After system failure, when
WarmStart occurs , the open transaction log is applied against the UV data
files ensuring that the internal file structure is intact.

Thanks,
   Steve

P.S. I will be speaking on the interaction of HW, SW and OS at
