[U2] UV - Globalization studies, relative to U2
Has anyone seen a study, a white paper, or anything which discusses Globalization in the MV arena? We need to provide currency translation in the near future, and eventually content localization. If someone has some links to read, or documents it would give us a leg up. I'm sure some of you have done this. Where did you start? Did you buy a solution, write your own? Do you mean something like National Language Support (NLS) http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/epubs/pdf/25119180.pdf With NLS mode enabled, you can use UniVerse in various languages and countries. You can do the following: - Input data in many character sets (dependent on your local keyboard) - Retrieve data and format it using your own conventions or those of another country - Output data to a screen or printer using the character sets and display conventions of different countries - Write programs that run in different languages and countries without source changes or recompilation We need to provide currency translation in the near future, and eventually content localization. If someone has some links to read, or documents it would give us a leg up. ** This email message and any files transmitted with it are confidential and intended solely for the use of addressed recipient(s). I'm sure some of you have done this. Where did you start? Did you buy a solution, write your own? This may not be much help but DesignBais has been used to put a web GUI onto non-english apps, including at least one Chinese app which I believe runs over U2. It includes a glossary feature which allows a single application to display localized prompts, help text, etc. I don't know of any studies or white papers done on localization but maybe DesignBais International can hook you up with some client/developers who could share their experience. Content localization can mean a lot of things so be sure to define your business strategy clearly so that you can evaluate whether specific tools are in line with your goals. You might have better luck finding information about globalization and localization with regard to software development in general, identify appropriate non-MV tools, and then work out the best connectivity solutions. The .NET Framework and Java both have extensive localization (internationalization (I18N)) support built in, and from there tools like mv.NET, UO.NET, and UOJ can help to make the connection to U2 relatively seamless. Currency translation can be done from U2 by calling a variety of Web Services, either directly from U2 or through one of the above mentioned connectivity tools. So everything that you're asking about is within reach.
