RE: How far can U2 scale?

2004-04-23 Thread Keith Upton
Across 3 systems, 7,500(ish) on-line Users, have benchmarked to 20,000+
Users. Spooler struggles and we have re-written parts of it.

Subject: How far can U2 scale?

At what point in the life of application software would it be so large
that
you could not (or would not want to) support it with your existing
UniData
or UniVerse database?

Is there a point where you would be better served by DB2 or Oracle, for
example due to the scale you are working with?

I hear people talk about moving way from U2 in order to do ODBC and use
standard industry tools (and most find that the grass is not greener for
those purposes), but I don't hear about switching because of running
into
scaling issues. However, we sometimes think of PICK as addressing
small-to-mid size businesses and RDBMS folks sometimes think of their
products as scaling the best.

So, what's the cut-off for U2? Thanks. --dawn

RE: We need a web based Forum!

2004-04-20 Thread Keith Upton

snip
The main argument against the forum is that some of you out their can
not
"access the web". How can anyone in a development role do their job
properly
nowadays without being able to "access the web". I am sure that if all
we
had was a forum on the web, admin departments would be told that X needs
web
access and they would get it.

How about company/department policy? And why can't I do my job properly
without having access to the web?

I was one of the two technical managers for the development of PI/open.
It's always sad watching a product that you worked on be put into
retirement.

Perhaps I can now throw out my collection of PI/open manuals.

RE: Modern Universe - was: The lists are closing

2004-03-30 Thread Keith Upton
Interesting...

Have just come back from holiday and have not had the time to read all
these messages but have been drawn to this one! We have a HP superdome,
running Uv 9.6 to our 700 branches and offices from our central head
office. All development is carried out in house. All of the company
business systems are written in databasic and all 8000 online users seem
to be getting their work done! Not sure what you mean by corporate?

Our UV Developers here have over 25 years of Experience doing the stuff
the do... I personally am not interested in learning the details of UV
since nobody really uses this kinda stuff at Corporate Level.

I am simply surprised why UV is still used by a few Loyal Folk...
when people with 25 years of experience simply cannot make it perform
well.

FWIW
this is an integral component of our Visage product – simply drop a scanner element on a form & you are in business
(provided you have a PC with a scanner or Camera or other TWAIN device that
is!). Simple matter to then have your indexing inside UV, and store the actual
image in “web
space” –
can also drop a file element to allow arbitrary capture/loading of any file.

Hi All,

Does anyone
know of any products available for document scanning and retrieval with
interfaces for Universe.

Or any
products that have a reasonable API so we can create our own interface.
