RE: What are "embedded databases"

2004-03-29 Thread Daly, Mark
That's my understanding.. If you think of a linux server hosting Tomcat
which in turn is hosting a complex Java application, which utilizes a big
ass Oracle database hosted on a Solaris server in some other corner of the
IT dept. Then the Oracle database is not embedded, and is accessed via
JDBC.

The funny thing is, Universe is only embedded for those good ol' fashioned
green screen apps that we all know and love. In today's world, there is
nothing to stop you from swapping out that 'big ass Oracle database'
mentioned above with a Universe database... Then, it's no longer
embedded Right???

And, what if the database is not embedded?

How does the data get moved between the application and the database?
ODBC/etc., etc., etc.?

Does "embedded" imply a level of application interactivity with the data in
the database that one would not have if the database being addressed by the
application was not embedded?

Perhaps I just take "embedded" for granted.

So most of this list's members probably don't *use* an embedded
database, but rather they are in the business of embedding one into
their own application.

And when they do, I guess they turn RetrieVe or UniQuery into an
"Embedded Reporter", eh?

Hmm ... I thought that what IBM mean by 'embedded database' is
"the database you didn't even know you had".
[8 words!]

I.E., there's a database 'embedded' in the software package you bought /
use, but you may have no idea that there is a database in there, and even if
you do understand that fact, you've no idea which DBMS is actually 'under
the hood'.

Well, not sure about 10 words or less, but here's my effort:

An embedded database is a technology that is deployed as the component
responsible for data management within a business application.

The other day, someone asked me if I used an "embedded database". And I was
like ... what?

Can someone give ten words or less of what an embedded database is?
And then maybe an example of a database that is NOT embedded?
Thanks
