CALL FOR PAPERS

10th International Workshop on
Uncertainty Reasoning for the Semantic Web
http://c4i.gmu.edu/ursw/2014

In conjunction with the
13th International Semantic Web Conference (ISWC 2014)

Riva del Garda, Italy
October 19-20, 2014
--

You are invited to participate in the upcoming workshop on Uncertainty
Reasoning for the Semantic Web (URSW), to be held as part of the 13th
International Semantic Web Conference (ISWC) in October 2014 at
Fierecongressi SpA, Riva del Garda, Italy.

ISWC is a major international forum for presenting visionary research on
all aspects of the Semantic Web. The Uncertainty Reasoning workshop is
an exciting opportunity for collaboration and cross-fertilization
between the uncertainty reasoning community and the Semantic Web /
Linked Data community.

Effective methods for reasoning under uncertainty are vital for
realizing many aspects of the Semantic Web vision, but the ability of
current-generation web technology to handle uncertainty remains
extremely limited. Thus, there is a continuing demand for uncertainty
reasoning technology among Semantic Web researchers and developers, and
the URSW workshop creates a unique opening to bring together two
communities with a clear commonality of interest but limited history of
interaction. By capitalizing on this opportunity, URSW could spark
dramatic progress toward realizing the Semantic Web vision.

IMPORTANT DATES

**July 16** (extended): Paper submissions due
July 30: Paper acceptance notification
August 20: Camera-ready papers due
October 19-20: 10th Workshop on Uncertainty Reasoning for the Semantic Web

SUBMISSION DETAILS

http://c4i.gmu.edu/ursw/2014/submission/index.html

PRESENTATION AND PUBLICATION

URSW 2014 will be a half-day workshop.

and published in the workshop proceedings. Authors of accepted technical
papers will have 20 minutes to present their work, while authors of
accepted position papers will have a 10-minute slot to share their

[UAI] PhD position / scholarship in Machine Learning / Linked Data / Semantic Web

2013-04-30 Thread Matthias Nickles
Applications are invited for a PhD position (with possible scholarship) based
at the College
of Engineering Informatics at National University of Ireland, Galway. The
successful candidate
will perform research in the area of Artificial Intelligence under the
supervision of Dr. Matthias
Nickles and will have the opportunity to collaborate with the Digital
Enterprise Research
Institute (DERI), Galway.

Candidates should have a very good degree in Computer Science or in a closely
related subject.
They should have excellent analytical skills and should be able to work
independently as well as
in cooperation with others. The successful applicant needs to have very good
English skills.
Prior research experience in some area of Artificial Intelligence such as
machine learning, logic,
Data Science/Big Data, probabilistic modeling, or Semantic Web and Linked Data
technologies,
is a significant plus.
Applicants are expected to possess very good programming skills in at least one
of the following
languages: Scala, Java, C/C++, Haskell, Clojure, Prolog, or Answer Set
Programming/AnsProlog.

Suitable candidates will be considered for a scholarship. The scholarship is
expected to start in
September 2013 and is tenable for up to a maximum of four years, dependent on
satisfactory
progress and availability of funding. The value of the scholarship is up to
12,000 euro per year
(tax-free) plus course fees.

The PhD research work will be positioned in the areas of Statistical Relational
Learning (SRL)
and/or uncertainty reasoning for the Web, the Semantic Web, and Linked Data.
SRL is an emerging subfield of Machine Learning and Data Mining for learning in
relationally-,
graph- or network-like structured domains, such as the (Semantic) Web, Linked
Data and Social
Networks. SRL builds upon classical Machine Learning and probability theory as
well as on
first-order logic and formal knowledge representation, bridging the gap between
two of the
most important spheres of Artificial Intelligence. SRL frameworks such as
Markov Logic Networks
have already proven to be highly successful in real-world applications. A
direction of SRL which
is particularly interesting in regard to the prospective PhD research is
Relational Reinforcement
Learning (RRL), which combines Reinforcement Learning with structurally rich
relational or
graph-like representation formats.
Possible topics for PhD work are the investigation and development of novel
methods, techniques
and tools for the SRL of interaction processes on the Web/the Semantic Web, SRL
for predictions
using large-scale dynamic data on the Web/Semantic Web, and SRL backed-up by
Constraint
Solving or Answer Set Programming.
Further topics can be found at
http://www.it.nuigalway.ie/researchtopics.html#_Toc201304261
Variants of these might also be possible.

Interested candidates should contact Dr. Matthias Nickles
matthias.nick...@nuigalway.ie
as soon as possible for a discussion of suitable project topics and for further
details.

Application is a two-stage process. Initial applications consisting of a CV,
transcript(s), a
motivation letter and a list of papers published (if any) should be sent to Dr.
Matthias Nickles
no later than 15th May 2013.

 Workshop must not exceed
12 pages, including figures. Submissions exceeding this limit
will not be reviewed.
Position papers consist of a summary of ideas, projects, or any research
efforts that are relevant to the URSW Workshop must not exceed 4 pages.

Following the general acceptance rules of the ISWC 2010 conference, papers
that, at the time of submission, are under review for or have already been
published in or accepted for publication in a journal or another conference

URSW 2010 will be a full-day workshop divided into three sessions.
Two of those sessions will be devoted to paper presentations, while
the remaining session will be planned in a format that invites an

All papers accepted to the URSW will be presented during the
workshop and published in the workshop proceedings, which will
be available as a separate publication after the Conference.
Authors of accepted technical papers will have 20 minutes to
present their work, while authors of accepted position
papers will have a 10-minute slot to share their ideas. Both
technical and position papers will be published in the URSW
Workshop proceedings, to be available after the ISWC 2010 Conference.

In addition, technical papers accepted for presentation at the URSW 2010
will be eligible for participating in the selection to the planned Springer
LNCS volume on Uncertainty Reasoning for the Semantic Web

Re: [UAI] belief network ontology

2008-07-21 Thread Matthias Nickles
I'm working on a project in which my system is to receive causal
networks that are created by other systems. Does anyone know of an OWL
 description for causal networks?

You will also find lots of relevant papers in the proceedings of the
Workshop on Uncertainty Reasoning for the Semantic Web (URSW):
