[Bug 60023] emacs-snapshot-gtk regularly crashes on edgy amd64

2006-09-12 Thread Alex Murray
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: emacs-snapshot-gtk

emacs-snapshot-gtk regularly crashes on edgy amd64 for a number of
different file-types. Sometimes this seems to be a relatively random
event, and will occur when simply scrolling through a file, while other
times it regularly occurs during auto-fill actions, and these are most
likely related to bug #54643 [Crasher: auto-fill in comments crashes
emacs]. Is there any chance an updated version from Debian can be synced
to the edgy tree to try and resolve some of these issues, as emacs-
snapshot is unusable at the moment.

[Bug 38263] Re: freeze at startup

2006-09-12 Thread Olivier Prieur
I had the same probleme !

Computer : Acer Aspire 5024 WLMI (turion)
ubuntu version : Edgy Eft knot 2
Can't boot with traditionnal options ...

But the computer boots with these options :
acpi=off
irqpoll
xforcevesa

But : i've got a black screen. Gnome seems to open because i can hear
the music ... but no image even in safe graphic mode !

So i had to switch for another console and make a dpkg-reconfigure
xserver-xorg with vesa solution ... AND IT WORKED !

[Bug 59976] Re: Clicking on popularity once should sort descending

2006-09-12 Thread Sebastian Heinlein
This is a valid and good point. But this behavior is the default GTK one
and I haven't found a way to change it. You can also find the same
situation in evolution: If you sort by date, you will get the oldest
message on top. Perhaps this is not always the desired behavior too.

Reverting ascending and descending in the sort function seems to be a
bad workaround.

[Bug 59547] Re: Trying to install an application causes crash if no free space

2006-09-12 Thread Sebastian Heinlein
It is quite hard to make sure that there is enough space, since the user
could use several different mount points for his file system and we
don't know how much space the installed packages requires in each
directory.

The problem is that the packages are downloaded as root. And root is
allowed to fill up the file system completely. We could only check if
the package could be downloaded safely.

I will take a look at mvo's code in the dist-upgrade tool.

[Bug 59659] Re: Installer crashed

2006-09-12 Thread bremex
Hi all,

I apologise I could not log in before and could not tell you how I
sorted it out.

I got the error during the installation phase and, as I said, I selected
the size of each partition and created them. So while Kubuntu was
installing, it crashed.

I applied Micros*ft solution: stop, abort installation and shut down.
Then I started again with the installation, but this time I selected to
use the already existing partitions (but formating the partitions
againg). Everything went smooth, more than expected.

Just few words about my experience, I am wind*ws user since version 95.
Now I am fed up and am trying to free myself -- I am suffering a lot,
it is a path of pain. Nevertheless I think I will be free by the
beginning of 2007...

Cheers

[Bug 59930] Re: Boot hangs with message 'Waiting for root file system'

2006-09-12 Thread Alex Vaughn
Do you have any kind of special configurations for your root file
system? It looks as if the kernel is having trouble interacting with
the file system. Perhaps adding some files to your report such as
/etc/fstab. I only ask this since I am not having any trouble with a
laptop, but it's just an IDE hard drive. Also, any information you can
gather from the system logs on your computer may be helpful. Thanks.

[Bug 54002] Re: LVM/MD root filesystem not found by uuid

2006-09-12 Thread Dominik Kubla
Scott,

nobody does mount by UUID. Neither *BSD, Solaris, AIX, HP-UX, Tru64 does
it. These Unix derivatives have pretty smart engineering teams around.
That should tell you something...

As for the valid configurations:

Category A (Will probably never work):

1. loopback mounts (eg. crypto root) - kills secure mobile devices
2. network mounts (eg. nfs root or raid with nbd) - kills one half of thin
client setups
3. layered mounts (eg. unionfs) - kills the other half of thin client setups
and one half of embedded devices
4. tmpfs root - kills the other half of embedded devices

Category B (Probably resolveable but changes expected behaviour)

5. disaster recovery with replicated root file systems (eg. rsync): there the
UUIDs of both filesystem have to be different, otherwise they wouldn't be
unique - kills quite common DR strategy and effectively kills the use in
corporate server environments
6. bare metal recovery: restore tape backup to newly installed system will
result in a unbootable setup because UUID no longer matches... - a support
nightmare, effectively kills the use in corporate desktop environments

Category C (Has severe side-effects)

7. systems with SAN/iSCSI storage: udev will scan all devices it sees to
determine the UUID. this is likely to take a long time ((I know of hosts
with several hundred SAN storage volumes assigned to them) and prone to
disrupting the operation of other hosts (since Linux does not honor SCSI
reservation)- this kills the enterprise server setups.

[Bug 60031] PCMCIA CD-ROM neither mounted nor appears on desktop

2006-09-12 Thread Jörg Höhle
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pcmcia-cs

[not sure which package, might as well be cdrom-detect or gnome-utils].
I was trying to expand
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/LaptopTestingTeam/FujitsuLifebookC1110
and test PCMCIA functionality with Dapper.

A PCMCIA network card is nicely integrated and added as eth2 to the
system.

My expectation as a user is that a CD-ROM inserted into an external
drive via a PCMCIA - SCSI bridge would behave as well as the internal
one or an external USB memory stick and show up on the Gnome desktop.

The USB stick and the internal CD-ROM are automatically mounted to
/media/ and shown on the desktop. But for the PCMCIA SCSI drive,
nothing appears on the desktop nor in /etc/fstab (as in the old days
with USB memory sticks), nor in /proc/mounts.

The good news is that Dapper works better than Breezy in that I've been able to
mount the external CD-ROM device manually, guessing the drive name from the log
files. In Breezy, this produced errors:
Sep 9 22:17:04 localhost cardmgr[7668]: executing: './scsi stop scsi0'
Sep 9 22:17:04 localhost cardmgr[7668]: + open() failed: No such file or
directory
Sep 9 22:17:04 localhost cardmgr[7668]: + /dev/scsi0: No such file or

Sep 9 22:17:04 localhost cardmgr[7668]: executing: 'modprobe -r aha152x_cs'
But let's forget about Breezy now and consider Dapper only.

Here are relevant snippets from the log files on Dapper:

Guessing the device names from the log files, I've successfully issued
the following command:

# mount -v -t iso9660 /dev/sr0 /mnt
mount: block device /dev/sr0 is write-protected, mounting read-only
/dev/scd0 on /mnt type iso9660 (ro)

The CD-ROM is readable from there on. So it basically works.
The bug is a) the lack of integration with the desktop and b) possibly should
it create /etc/fstab entries (however these days, USB memory sticks are just
mounted to /media and do not augment /etc/fstab anymore) or become
automatically mounted and visible in /proc/mounts and /media.

BTW, why do /etc/mtab and /proc/mounts then differ in device names?
/proc/mounts reports:
/dev/sr0 /mnt iso9660 ro 0 0
/etc/mtab contains:
/dev/scd0 /mnt iso9660 ro 0 0

Furthermore, I'd feel much more comfortable if there were commands to safely
remove the device, instead of ejecting the card and seeing some errors:

[Bug 60033] Multiple Crash Alerts for Firefox 2.0b1 in Edgy

2006-09-12 Thread Derick Eisenhardt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

After Firefox crashes, a popup window informs you that it has crashed,
and asks if you'd like to file a bug report or relaunch it. Sometimes,
if you do not make a choice soon enough it will continue to pop-up
numerous times.

Just now it probably popped up with this message about 20 times, then it
popped up a different one asking whether I'd like to resume my previous
session or start a new one. I'm not sure whether this is Firefox or
Ubuntu specific.

I'm running the latest update of Edgy on a 32bit Pentium4 system
(hyperthreading disabled) with 1GB of RAM, if that helps any.

I will try to recreate this with a firefox ran from the command line to
see if it gives any useful info...

[Bug 60032] no Umlaut in filenames from smbmount by default

2006-09-12 Thread Jörg Höhle
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: smbfs

Hi,
The Gnome desktop network mounter, the smbclient and a native MS-Windows-2k
manage to display Umlaute in filenames from a Linux Samba server just fine.
Using smbmount however, an ls command merely displays ? in lieu of the
Umlauts in concerned filenames.

Trying out many combinations of iocharset and codepage options I finally got
Umlaute to display fine as follows:
mount -t smbfs -o
username=xyz,uid=hoehle,gid=hoehle,file_mode=0640,codepage=cp437,iocharset=utf8
//10.0.0.79/hoehle /mnt/samba
which seems equivalent to:
smbmount //10.0.0.79/hoehle /mnt/samba -o
username=xyz,uid=hoehle,gid=hoehle,file_mode=0640,codepage=cp437,iocharset=utf8

codepage=utf8,iocharset=utf8 produces :x84 :x9a for some umlauts in ls output.
codepage=iso8859-1 produces :0084 :009a instead.
codepage=cp437, utf16 or utf-16 produce ? instead.

codepage=cp852,iocharset=utf8 finally works.
codepage=cp437,iocharset=utf8 also works.
Note that the iocharset option must be given as well.

man mount on fat says: By default, codepage 437 is used.
For consistency, I'd expect similar defaults with smbfs.
Similarly, I'm quite surprised that iocharset=utf8 is needed. I'd thought most
Linux software did the transition to UTF-8 these days (since Hoary, Warty was
not fully there).

smbfs should be as easy to use and provide similar defaults as all of
smbclient, the Gnome desktop and MS-Windows do.

[Bug 59946] Re: run action as root without prompting for a password

2006-09-12 Thread Martin Pitt
Indeed this is due to the new architecture of gnome-system-tools in
Edgy. The backend now is entirely separate, the frontend runs as normal
user, and they communicate over dbus. The current dbus policy is to
allow access to members of the admin group. Thus there is no sudo
involved any more.

This drops the additional safeguards that gksudo provides, like
verifying the person that is currently sitting on the computer (if there
is no active sudo timestamp at least), although with physical access
this merely provides a delay and does not stop any local attacks.

I'm aware that it is less than ideal, but until we have PolicyKit (in
edgy+1, I assume) we have to find a compromise for this. Right now
privilege transition works the same way as gnome-power-manager and
friends get root access.

[Bug 60035] Incorrect dependent and recommended packages

2006-09-12 Thread Peter H. Kim
Public bug reported:

I would like to install w3m-el to use w3m in GNU Emacs without having to
install xemacs21 and 14 other packages like apel, flim, mule-ucs,
xlhtml, ppthtml, semi, wv, xemacs21-basesupport, etc. Please only keep
w3m as dependencies and downgrade others to 'suggested' installs.

The project website makes clear that apel (= 10.5) is only required if
it will be used on xemacs21, and that neither apel or xemacs21 is
necessary if GNU Emacs is used. The website further makes clear that
flim, mule-ucs, etc. (all currently 'recommended' installs for w3m-el)
are only recommended if using xemacs, or to use the shimbun library (no
offense intended, but I wonder if many non-Japanese w3m-users use the
shimbun library of w3m-el).

On my system (Dapper with emacs-snapshot-gtk and w3m already installed)
I should only have to install 1 package (w3m-el), but aptitude currently
requires me to install 16 new packages (because of the xemacs and
apel/flim/etc dependencies). Please don't force me to install unneeded
and unwanted xemacs.

Thank you in advance.

[Bug 60038] Scrambled sound in edgy eft alpha2

2006-09-12 Thread samdehaeck
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: alsa-base

Hello,

I just downloaded and tried the new edgy eft alpha2 live cd. This did
not boot into gnome. It halted before showing the desktop. Dropping to a
console and killing all things esd unblocked this and I could work
happily in gnome. However, the problem is not related to esd since I
cannot get any sound out of my laptop. This was no problem whatsoever
with Breezy. The problem started with Dapper and I filed a bug then as
well (bug 40176). For more details on my laptop please visit that bug
report.

What happens when I run $aplay anysound.wav is that I hear approximately
the first second of sound repeated twice and then nothing anymore. Thus,
it is, in my opinion, not related to the mixer settings. Also, very
importantly, this command does not exit normally. I have to kill it
manually. This obviously explains the halt in the gnome booting process.
(Note that with KDE and XFCE I also get no sound, but at least these
desktops finish the boot process!). Additionally, both Knoppix 5 and the
recent mandriva also provide me with no sound.

Thanks in advance.
Sam.

[Bug 25551] conflict between vga=0x317 and suspend mode

2006-09-12 Thread Jörg Höhle
In hindsight, it's not breezy-updates that fixed the problem.
I removed vga=0x317 from the grub kernel line, that's when suspend suddenly
started working again!

Not being able to use a high resolution console together with
suspend/hibernate is another bug. I very much enjoy and miss the
highres console from the Warty Live CD.

[Bug 60039] Edgy, network-admin and gateway address

2006-09-12 Thread emix
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-system-tools

1. open network-admin;
2. configure a wired connection;
3. set a static IP address and a gateway address;
4. click OK and then Close;
5. reopen network-admin.

The gateway address gets blank and networking doesn't work.

I have a standard updated installation of Edgy and I'm not using

[Bug 17599] not resolved

2006-09-12 Thread Nils
I have this issue on a T43p with Kubuntu Dapper. I'm not sure why this
problem is, but it stopped after I switched WLAN on again. When I turned
it back off cpu utilisation was very high again.

I also just setup the laptop and noticed that it does not use linux-686,
so i'm not sure if this has something to do with the problem.

Btw: Why does ubuntu install kernels for such old systems by default??

[Bug 60040] manpage says xhost +username should work

2006-09-12 Thread Jörg Höhle
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xhost

Hi,

The manpage says:
[+]name The given name (the plus sign is optional) is added to the list
allowed to connect to the X server. The name can be a host name or a user
name.

The manpage gives the impression that I can selectively enable other
users to participate in my X session. This is much preferable over
xhost +localhost or xhost +local:

But trying it out yields:
$ LANG=C xhost +u2
xhost: bad hostname u2
u2 is a regular user name on this system. xhost +local: works but is not
discriminating enough.

I have TCP disabled for X, i.e. only local sessions are possible. Ubuntu
Dapper is installed. I checked manpages from Debian and Suse, e.g.
http://www.sourcentral.org/man/SLES9/1+xhost and they all contain the
same text.

Under what circumstances would it be possible to use user names with xhost?
Is the manpage text misleading?

Regards,
 Jörg Höhle

[Bug 60041] 'sudo nvidia-glx-config enable' tell that xorg.com has not the correct md5sum

BUG: the command spits that '/etc/X11/xorg.conf' has a diferent md5sum
and can not be updated because i modify it (FALSE).

i can do a 'md5sum /etc/X11/xorg.conf | sudo tee [...]' as the error
report sugest me, and later do the 'sudo nvidia-glx-config enable'...

[Bug 59946] Re: run action as root without prompting for a password

2006-09-12 Thread aurelien naldi
indeed, when launched by a normal user, users-admin crashes and the terminal
output says that this user was not allowed to send a dbus message.
Sorry for the extra fear it gave me. I am still pretty sure to have launched it
as a normal user a while ago, but this was either a separate (fixed) bug or
some mis-remember on my part.
I still dislike being able to launch it without sudo controlling (it is
especially bad for people with custom sudo configuration, but they can work
around it manually I guess). Anyway, if a member of the admin group is
compromised, something bad can be done, it only makes things a bit easier.

Nice to have the UI running fully as non-priv user anyway!

[Bug 59342] Re: hal don't find that I'm on a laptop

2006-09-12 Thread Martin Pitt
For the record:

pitti curious - the place you patched out of osspec.c already tries to not
overwrite the value with 'unknown'
pitti this almost looks as if the inner if should be fixed
pitti if (strcmp
(hal_device_property_get_string (d, system.formfactor), unknown))
pitti - to !strcmp
pitti and an alternative added, for the case if the property does not exist
yet
pitti anyway, I'm applying your patch for now, but can you please take
another look at this?
pitti it should be something like
pitti if (!hal_device_property_exists(formfactor) ||
!strcmp(h_d_p_get_string(formfactor), unknown) { overwrite formfactor };

[Bug 52087] Re: scim-gtk2-immodule doesn't purge cleanly

2006-09-12 Thread Ming Hua
Although I don't have an Edgy installation right now, by looking at the
source I think I can confirm this bug.

The problem is that scim-gtk2-immodule calls /usr/sbin/update-gtk-
immodule in its postrm script, but this command is in package
libgtk2.0-bin, which can be removed before or at the same time as scim-
gtk2-immodule is removed.

The attached patch will be in the Debian upload 1.4.4-5 (pending
upload), I propose it be applied to the version in Ubuntu as well.

Ming, Debian maintainer of scim

Maybe that happen because windows doesn't support these type of files.
But Linux support it!
