[Bug 64119] add/remove ati binary package

2006-10-05 Thread Jetix
Public bug reported:

Installing the xorg ati binary package from add/remove in edgy slows down the
system and producces system crashes when running X games.
For example: I installed Ubuntu Edgy made updates and all was fine even with
fglrx.
I then fixed my monitor settings by modifying the xorg.conf with the corect
settings for my monitor (Ivory max res 1280x1024 unknow in any os :P) for
beeing able to modify my refresh rate up to 85Hz. Then I thought of installing
the add/remove ati binary package, witch I did, but I then started having
problems :(. The X started moving sllightly slower. I thought perhaps my system
configuration but the big surprise camed when I've started to get system
crashes on oppening games (that didn't happend before - to be exact total
system freez). I've unistalled the package and all is back to normal again. A
friend told me that it's the same with the nvidia binary.
My system configuration:
AMD XP 2400+, 1G DDR, ATI 9200SE ATLANTIS, 200 +80 HDD - WD

Any way congratulations for the new release It's the best one yet, and
please excuse my bad english. keep up the good work and hope this post
helps you emprove it even more.

[Bug 64120] gnome-panel dead-locked after apt-get upgrade

2006-10-05 Thread Sylvain Defresne
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

After my last apt-get upgrade (and the two previous), gnome-panel dead-
locked during the process. Trying to trace it, it appears to be blobked
trying to acquire a mutex that it already holds.

  $ ps x|grep gnome-panel
  4330 ?Ss 0:07 gnome-panel --sm-client-id ...
  $ strace -p 4330
  futex(0xb765d120, FUTEX_WAIT, 2, NULL unfinished ...

It stay there until I Ctrl-C the strace. I thus installed gnome-panel-
dbg, and tried to get a backtrace (I'll attach it to this bug, with the
dpkg.log of the last upgrade so that you may have an idea of which

[Bug 61132] Re: lirc configuration not loaded after a reboot

2006-10-05 Thread reggaemanu
Oops, sorry i forgotten this bugreport...

So, thanks to pointing me to the sysylog, it's how you said...in fact the
DEVICE= parameter in hardware.conf wasn't set correctly to /dev/ttyS0 and the
daemon quits.
But why dpkg-reconfigure is able to find the correct device and restarting the
daemon don't find it ?

Anyway, it was my bad, so i apologize for that, but the configuration
tool that used to be in the package before could/ should avoid problems
like that, it was really much easier to configure lirc (i'm not the only
one who have this restart problem or others configuration problems since
this tool is no more available)

[Bug 64123] Superblock last write time is in the future

2006-10-05 Thread Duncan Lithgow
Public bug reported:

I'm running the latest kernel for 6.10 (I'm posting from windows and
forgot to check the exact kernel version)

My system will not always start, here is one of the bugs I'm reporting
in that context. System details are here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LaptopTestingTeam/HP_Pavilion_DV8220EA

During (attempted) bootup in recovery mode I got:

*checking root file system...
fsck 1.39 (29-May-2006)
base: Superblock last write time is in the future. FIXED.

What was that and why did it happen? I have been told that using UTC
instead of local time can give problems if I have windows installed on
the same PC. But I installed Ubuntu after Windows - so Ubuntu knew that
I had windows installed (it was 'found' before writting grub.lst) - so I
assume time is set to local. I'm not sure how to check any of this

[Bug 64128] ati/radeon driver has issues with resolution of external displays

2006-10-05 Thread anthony baxter
Public bug reported:

I have a Dell Latitude D600. It has a Radeon Mobility 9000 M9 (R250 Lf)
graphics card, and an internal 1400x1050 display. I recently picked up a Chimei
CMV 221A LCD monitor, capable of doing 1680x1050. The closed-source fglrx
driver picks this up and does the right thing - offering both 1680x1050 and
1400x1050 resolutions. The open-source radeon/ati driver, however, loses it's
tiny little mind. It refuses to accept that 1680x1050 might be a valid
resolution, telling me that
(WW) RADEON(0): Mode 1680x1050 is out of range.
(WW) RADEON(0): Valid modes must be between 320x200-1400x1050

If I plug in the external monitor after X has booted, it sends 1280x1024
out to the LCD. Worse yet, if I start X with the monitor plugged in, it
sets both the internal LCD and external display to 1280x1024. And the
bottom of the screen isn't visible! Argh!

The fglrx driver, on the other hand, works fine. But the previous
version of the closed-source driver had a boned version of libGL, and
the latest version has dropped support for this graphics card. Sigh.

I will attach two xorg.confs and two Xorg.logs to this report, for the
radeon driver and the fglrx driver. I can also generate one for the
radeon driver booting with the external monitor plugged in, if it's
useful.

[Bug 48473] Re: Some drivers do not work with wpasupplicant, and therefore NM.

2006-10-05 Thread Scott Robinson
Bug 42504 and 46136 are the same bug. (but not marked as duplicate for
historical / versioning reasons) Since you keep making casual reads as
opposed to understand the problem, let me describe it here in detail to
resolve your curiousity:

In dapper, the version of ndiswrapper is only partially compatible with
wpasupplicant. Therefore, only _some_ ndiswrapper setups work well with
the ndiswrapper-specific wpasupplicant work-around that is actually
selected by NM. The remaining setups continue breaking. Therefore, using
ndiswrapper with NM (and wpasupplicant) in dapper is a inconsistent
situation and a lot of people solved the issue by either rolling back,
or reverting the workaround.

In edgy, the version of ndiswrapper is much newer. It is fully
compatible with wpasupplicant running in its normal mode of using
wireless extensions. However, the dapper workaround patch to NM that
calls wpasupplicant with the alternate driver is still in the package.
Therefore, out of the box, NM (not wpasupplicant) is broken on edgy with
ndiswrapper. wpasupplicant works fine, but NM is instructing it to run
in a historical method.

Perhaps that helps explains the issue? This bug is, of course, totally
different than the ones occurring in this bug. In this situation, the
drivers themselves simply do not work with wpasupplicant in wireless
extensions mode at all.

My plain is to start a hardware database on the wiki for working
NetworkManager configurations once the ndiswrapper patch removal is
approved by main sponsors. (Thereby being able to close out several
bugs.)

[Bug 61530] Re: Shutdown sound is truncated

As a user I am down with a short (50 ms) sound as part of the shut down

As stated above, I expect the computer to say byebye... Usplash does
the trick visually, but, for those user that have the capability of
hearing only for example, a short sound would be welcomed as an announce
of finishing the maxhine session.

In my machine with edgy I enjoy the shutdown sound, but with a shutdown
time of 5 and up to 10 seconds It seems unnecesary to have such a long
sound as the none we use now.
