I had commented that due to the fact that I was installing from the live CD, the log files were no where to be found, and even if they were somewhere, I have since restarted the computer and and reinstalled Dapper, reformatting the hard drive in the process, so I am sorry that I do not have them. I can't verify this. I just fired up Win 2K and IE6 in VMware and had no issues at all. I am attaching a screenshot for proof on this one. Also, there is nothing funky about the install in VMware. I tried the install again after filing this bug and then it worked. Maybe the first crash was caused by the CD drive - it seemed like it had a little trouble reading the CD-RW that the installer was on. Nonetheless, the installer should not have crashed. I don't have the logfiles from the failed install anymore. This seems to be the issue in kernel/acpi/hal which reports strange remaining_time on some cases (in your case even insertion of CD). Worse, it forces hibernation when the battery still has plenty of capacity left. What is the level at this point in time? Is it below 50%? guidance- power-manager has CHARGE_LEVEL_THRESHOLD at 50%, which should prevent critical action if battery level is above 50%.
