[Bug 61711] Re: no boot splash and very slow booting

2006-11-08 Thread Jesse Lang
Thought I had the same thing here, AMD, upgrade from dapper. Slow boot
from grub, I see the usplash initially, but then it goes to blinking
cursor, hard drive light *blinks* furiously. Tried a 'noquiet'
'nosplash' suggested above, but it does the same thing (HD starts
blinking, screen sits for at least 3 minutes) when loading my USB
drivers). This happens even without my mouse plugged in. After more
searching, I found bug #6 and bug #67299 which seemed to have
similar symptoms. Oddly enough, the upgrade created an ARRAY entry in
my /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf even though I don't use any software RAID.
After much trial and tribulation, this got my system back on track:

1) remove the ARRAY entry in /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf
2) run 'sudo dpkg-reconfigure mdadm, answer the questions, defaulting to no
since I don't use software RAID. This will update the initramfs for the kernel
3) reboot

Now my boot time is back to normal!

[Bug 70850] show all users checkbox is gone

2006-11-08 Thread Mikele
Public bug reported:

The user-admin dialog in Edgy doesn't show the
show all users checkbox anymore, and only the users with UID 1000 are shown.
I can see how this may be regarded as a feature, simplifying the interface,
but in some cases may be quite annoying.

* test-case (my case): I'm adding a PC to a network with NFS shares; some users
over the network have UIDs 1000, and I need these UIDs to be preserved for
NFS to work properly. When I change the pre-defined UIDs, those users are not
listed anymore, and I have to edit their properties via console.
* test-case 2: I'm just curious, or want to have a look to the complete list of
users in a graphical fashion. users-admin was a good tool for that, when it was
able to show all users.

**WORKAROUND:
sudo vi /etc/login.defs
change UID_MIN to 1

this is not very clean, but I guess that if one needs to change
automatically generated user-ids, he should also be able to take care
not to assign reserved userids to normal users.

[Bug 70849] Crash when trying to lock version for tora package

2006-11-08 Thread Iassan
Public bug reported:

I needed tora package with Oracle support, so I've downloaded source
package for tora and recompiled it with support for Oracle. Now update-
manager wants to update tora from repository. So I tried to lock version
of tora, to the one I have. Without success.

I start synaptic, select tora package, go to Package menu and select
Lock Version. Synaptic works for about a second and then segfaults.
Running from console gives me this output:

[Bug 70852] including hardcoded ../po/ in translation PATH

2006-11-08 Thread Liam Bedford
Public bug reported:

do a 'strace env -i LANG=en_US.UTF-8 links www' (the env is just to
clear the environment so you know it's not just me).

You will see a bunch of:
open(../po/en_US.UTF-8.gmo, O_RDONLY|O_LARGEFILE) = -1 ENOENT (No such file
or directory)
open(../po/en_US.utf8.gmo, O_RDONLY|O_LARGEFILE) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or
directory)
open(../po/en_US.gmo, O_RDONLY|O_LARGEFILE) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or
directory)
open(../po/en.UTF-8.gmo, O_RDONLY|O_LARGEFILE) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or
directory)
open(../po/en.utf8.gmo, O_RDONLY|O_LARGEFILE) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or
directory)
open(../po/en.gmo, O_RDONLY|O_LARGEFILE) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or
directory)

I imagine this is introduced in the compile (maybe for testing from the
source dir?):

$ strings `which links` | grep \\.\\./po
../po/

Apparently it's an upstream feature:
/* This is hacked for ELinks - we want to look up for the translations at the
 * correct place even if we are being ran from the source/build tree. */

..

   || !add_to_string(str, ../po/)

This is a problem when ../po/ is slow. It could be a problem if ../po/ is
malicious, I think
(if you run links somewhere where there is a ../po/, will it override the
translations?)

[Bug 70637] Re: BugBuddy should not run if the system is swapping

2006-11-08 Thread Steve Alexander
I'm not really aware of how bug-buddy works. I don't know what signal
was sent to the application process, all I know is that the application
crashed while the system was swapping a lot. What signal does a program
receive when it can't allocate memory? Or does that depend what
language it is written in, and whether the author has been careful to
check the results of malloc?

In my imagination, bug-buddy would ask the OS whether the system is
swapping. Then, if the system is swapping, it would not attach gdb to
the application process, and instead let the process swiftly die.

[Bug 70854] Tcc fails to link executables

2006-11-08 Thread Hrvoje Nikšić
Public bug reported:

Tcc appears non-functional in Edgy. It is unable to compile and link
any programs, even trivial ones, such as hello world. For example:

$ cat a.c
#include stdio.h
int main()
{
  printf(hello world\n);
  return 0;
}

$ tcc a.c
tcc: file 'AS_NEEDED' not found
/usr/lib/libc.so:3: filename expected
/usr/lib/libc.so:3: unrecognized file type
tcc: undefined symbol '__gcc_personality_v0'

tcc: undefined symbol '_Unwind_Backtrace'
tcc: undefined symbol '_Unwind_GetIP'
tcc: undefined symbol '_Unwind_GetGR'
tcc: undefined symbol '_Unwind_GetCFA'

This seems to be a link-related problem, because `tcc -c a.c' produces a
working a.o file, which can be (for testing purposes) linked with gcc,
and which results in a correctly running executable.

Note that tcc does not exhibit this problem on Debian testing.

Note: the original reporter indicated the bug was in package 'tcc';
however, that package was not published in Baltix.

[Bug 70858] Readahead should start in the background

2006-11-08 Thread kiddion
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: readahead

For some people, including me, using readahead as it is, slows down
boottime instead of speeding it up. It helped a great deal to start the
readahead-list binary using --background instead, which makes more sense
anyway.

Of course, for a profile run, the readahead-watch program should not
be started in the background!

Also there is some ugly scriptcode used in the readahead/readahead-desktop
scripts, which does not make sense:

if /sbin/start-stop-daemon [snip]
then
 log_end_msg 0
else
log_end_msg $?

[Bug 70860] (Usability) Add MSN account Screen name

2006-11-08 Thread andrewm
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gaim

I'm running gaim 2.0.0beta3.1 under Ubuntu Edgy 6.10 with VMware. I'm
not exactly sure if this is the right place to report usability related
bugs.

To setup a MSN account on GAIM using the Add Account window a user is
prompted to enter:

Protocol: MSN
Screen name: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Password:
Alias: Fred Smith

It is NOT immediately clear to the user that they are required to enter
their e-mail address in the Screen name: field.

Screen name sounds far too similar to Display Name, which is what
MSN Messenger for Windows calls the the Alias field.

I think the best way to fix this would be to change the field titles for
the MSN protocol (if selected) to something like:

Protocol: MSN
E-mail address: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Password: *
Display name: Fred Smith

I'm not familiar with the other IM protocols used in gaim so perhaps
this could also be applied to some of them as well?

MSN is certainly the most commonly used IM network here in Australia so
I think fixing this usability bug would benefit gaim.

[Bug 61711] Re: no boot splash and very slow booting

Please note that I have no md array as well, and now (from one or two
days before edgy was released) there IS usplash, and boot is NOT slow,
the only problem I write here again and again :) that my usplash is
blackwhite ... Sure, this is not a show-stopper, but quite strange and
ugly, since on i386 it's perfect and nice.

[Bug 63418] Re: CPU soft lockup during bootup

2006-11-08 Thread Sascha Herres
I can confirm that this behaviour seems to be caused by ipw394 in
conjunction with the kill switch:

I have a non-modified Dell Latitude D820 and with no cables attached
(even power) and no media inserted the systems freezes during booting up
as long as WiFi is disabled (kill switch set to ON). When I enable WiFi
(kill switch OFF) the system boots again. I tested this behaviour
several times now.

The freeze happens during starting of LVM or running fsck with the
message BUG: soft lockup detected on CPU#0!. Sometimes I also had the
Superblock last write time is in future. FIXED message on my screen
just before the freeze.

I am willing to deliever detailed information if needed.

[Bug 70862] cannot unmount hal-mounted volumes as user

2006-11-08 Thread Joachim Geiler
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pmount

This is more a feature request than a bug report. We administer some
computer rooms with dataless clients using ubuntu/kubuntu 6.06 and
onesis (see onesis.org). So the root file system of the clients is
mounted read-only. All writable files/directories are in a ramdisk with
symlinks pointing to. So /media is a symlink to /ram/media. I can
automatically mount to /media via hal without any problem. In
/proc/mounts the mountpoint appears for example as /ram/media/usbdisk,
but pumount unmounts only mountpoints below /media. Is it possible to
make the MEDIADIR configurable, for example via a configfile, which must
be owned by root?

[Bug 70866] Disabling DES-CBC3-SHA makes access to some SSL secured websites fail.

2006-11-08 Thread Daniel Pittman
Public bug reported:

G'day. This is a very painful bug, and I suspect one that will be quite
contentious.

After upgrading to Edgy access to the online banking service offered by
a local bank here in Australia is no longer possible.

This is caused, at heart, by this upstream bug:
http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=135545

From the report at least one other site has the same problem, which is
that only the DES-CBC3-SHA cipher is acceptable on the server end.

Other web browsers such as Opera and Firefox on Linux and Windows, as
well as Internet Explorer on Windows, do support this cipher and do
work.

At the moment the work-around is to use an alternate web browser -- but
to a non-technical user (where I learned about this) the problem is both
incomprehensible and a significant regression from Dapper.

I will also be adding information to the upstream bug as soon as my new
account in their BTS comes through, but I believe it is appropriate to
ask the Ubuntu team to revert this change and restore compatible
behaviour.

I note that the upstream report lists incompatibility with some sites
as the root cause of the problem. A more correct fix is probably to
demote the cipher set down to the very end of the SSL/TLS list provided
the server, ensuring that it is negotiated if and only if no other
cipher is acceptable to the server.

That should provide maximum bug-compatibility without compromising
usability.

Regards, Daniel.

[Bug 70455] Re: dependencies seem incomplete

2006-11-08 Thread wouter
Two comments on this bug:

The fact that none of the packages pulls in beid is not a bug, that's a
feature. There are many ways in which one can use smartcards; PCSC Lite
is only one of them, and the only one that requires pcscd. Depending on
pcscd would be wrong, since you couldn't then purge it if you were using
a smartcard that requires openct instead (such as mine). I'll add a
comment to that effect to the description of future versions of the
beid/belpic packages.

Second, the libpcsclite dependency should've been pulled in by the
shlibs system. If it isn't, then that's a bug in ubuntu on which I (the
Debian maintainer for belpic) have no influence. It might also be the
case that the libpcsclite message is harmless (provided you use openct),
but I'm not sure about that bit.

Finally found this place. have the same problem. V92 modem in PSI slot, Ubuntu

It is not only apt-get that triggers it. Any bigger download (via FF for
example) stalls as well. Internet browsing is OK and faster than on W2K.

[Bug 67120] Re: [KDE 3.5.5] Device labels are not correctly displayed on desktop

2006-11-08 Thread Eduard Ereza Martínez
Sincerely, I just can't understand why media:/ is being changed to

Wouldn't it be better if all worked using the media:/ location like it
was doing in 3.5.4, but, in order to get the real location on the
location bar, only one thing should be changed: when clicking on a
device in media:/ or in the desktop, it should open the real location
(for example, if My CD-ROM appeared on media:/, when clicking it
should open /media/cdrom0 instead of media:/cdrom).

Or at least, keep the media:/ system until the patch works exactly like
it, and correctly.

[Bug 70858] Re: Readahead should start in the background

2006-11-08 Thread kiddion
Hmm, seems the contrary of:
https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/readahead-list/+bug/59716

However, booting with readahead in the foreground (thus stalling the
bootprocess), my bootime in edgy is roughly 55 seconds, while it is 47
seconds when readahead is started in the background...

And a lot of people at http://www.ubuntuforums.org don't benefit from
readahead in the foreground. It seems illogical that readahead can be
faster in the foreground - reading ahead large files like all python
libraries implicitly used by hplip/kde-guidence and all fonts loaded by

[Bug 70555] Re: Crash when downloading folders of files

2006-11-08 Thread Aaron Whitehouse
Here is the output from Valgrind.

$ valgrind -v --tool=memcheck --leak-check=full --num-callers=12 --log-
file=valgrind.log gftp-gtk

I was very surprised, everything worked perfectly (obviously a lot
slower than usual) when gftp was run in this way - there was no crash
and no freeze.

[Bug 62308] Re: Permission Denied on nfs clients for only some files

2006-11-08 Thread Dirk Schmitt
Also here the NFS server is unusable.
The bug is reported weeks before the edgy was released. A server without
reliable nfs is useless and unacceptable for the majority of installations.

Now edgy is released 2 weeks ago and this mission critical bug remains unfixed.
Also the former kernel 2.6.17-6 has disappeared.

Please provide a download link to the old version for a short time
solution.

If I couldn't solve the problem in my installation here, I have to drop
edgy and go back to dapper (or maybe debian).

[Bug 62308] Re: Permission Denied on nfs clients for only some files

2006-11-08 Thread Matthew Caron
I didn't notice this bug until after I'd removed the old dapper kernels.

This is especially difficult because I'm pitching Ubuntu + Xen as a
server consolidation solution to management. Because they're dragging
their feet on hardware purchases, I have some time, but as it stands
right now, we cannot deploy Ubuntu.

I'm thinking of perhaps using AFS instead, and selling it as a look at
all these whiz features AFS has over NFS.

[Bug 67451] Re: Crash when closing a loading rss window

2006-11-08 Thread Aaron Whitehouse
I created and installed debug symbols using the directions on:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProgramCrash

and recreated the crash, so hopefully this report adds some value.
