[Bug 61711] Re: no boot splash and very slow booting
Thought I had the same thing here, AMD, upgrade from dapper. Slow boot from grub, I see the usplash initially, but then it goes to blinking cursor, hard drive light *blinks* furiously. Tried a 'noquiet' 'nosplash' suggested above, but it does the same thing (HD starts blinking, screen sits for at least 3 minutes) when loading my USB drivers). This happens even without my mouse plugged in. After more searching, I found bug #6 and bug #67299 which seemed to have similar symptoms. Oddly enough, the upgrade created an ARRAY entry in my /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf even though I don't use any software RAID. After much trial and tribulation, this got my system back on track: 1) remove the ARRAY entry in /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf 2) run 'sudo dpkg-reconfigure mdadm, answer the questions, defaulting to no since I don't use software RAID. This will update the initramfs for the kernel 3) reboot Now my boot time is back to normal! -- no boot splash and very slow booting https://launchpad.net/bugs/61711 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 70850] show all users checkbox is gone
Public bug reported: The user-admin dialog in Edgy doesn't show the show all users checkbox anymore, and only the users with UID 1000 are shown. I can see how this may be regarded as a feature, simplifying the interface, but in some cases may be quite annoying. * test-case (my case): I'm adding a PC to a network with NFS shares; some users over the network have UIDs 1000, and I need these UIDs to be preserved for NFS to work properly. When I change the pre-defined UIDs, those users are not listed anymore, and I have to edit their properties via console. * test-case 2: I'm just curious, or want to have a look to the complete list of users in a graphical fashion. users-admin was a good tool for that, when it was able to show all users. **WORKAROUND: sudo vi /etc/login.defs change UID_MIN to 1 this is not very clean, but I guess that if one needs to change automatically generated user-ids, he should also be able to take care not to assign reserved userids to normal users. ** Affects: gnome-system-tools (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- show all users checkbox is gone https://launchpad.net/bugs/70850 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Public bug reported: I needed tora package with Oracle support, so I've downloaded source package for tora and recompiled it with support for Oracle. [Bug 70637] Re: BugBuddy should not run if the system is swapping
I'm not really aware of how bug-buddy works. I don't know what signal was sent to the application process, all I know is that the application crashed while the system was swapping a lot. What signal does a program receive when it can't allocate memory? Or does that depend what language it is written in, and whether the author has been careful to check the results of malloc? In my imagination, bug-buddy would ask the OS whether the system is swapping. Then, if the system is swapping, it would not attach gdb to the application process, and instead let the process swiftly die. -- BugBuddy should not run if the system is swapping https://launchpad.net/bugs/70637 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 70862] cannot unmount hal-mounted volumes as user
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: pmount This is more a feature request than a bug report. We administer some computer rooms with dataless clients using ubuntu/kubuntu 6.06 and onesis (see onesis.org). So the root file system of the clients is mounted read-only. All writable files/directories are in a ramdisk with symlinks pointing to. So /media is a symlink to /ram/media. I can automatically mount to /media via hal without any problem. In /proc/mounts the mountpoint appears for example as /ram/media/usbdisk, but pumount unmounts only mountpoints below /media. [Bug 70866] Disabling DES-CBC3-SHA makes access to some SSL secured websites fail.
Public bug reported: G'day. This is a very painful bug, and I suspect one that will be quite contentious. After upgrading to Edgy access to the online banking service offered by a local bank here in Australia is no longer possible. This is caused, at heart, by this upstream bug: http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=135545 From the report at least one other site has the same problem, which is that only the DES-CBC3-SHA cipher is acceptable on the server end. Other web browsers such as Opera and Firefox on Linux and Windows, as well as Internet Explorer on Windows, do support this cipher and do work. At the moment the work-around is to use an alternate web browser -- but to a non-technical user (where I learned about this) the problem is both incomprehensible and a significant regression from Dapper. I will also be adding information to the upstream bug as soon as my new account in their BTS comes through, but I believe it is appropriate to ask the Ubuntu team to revert this change and restore compatible behaviour. I note that the upstream report lists incompatibility with some sites as the root cause of the problem. A more correct fix is probably to demote the cipher set down to the very end of the SSL/TLS list provided the server, ensuring that it is negotiated if and only if no other cipher is acceptable to the server. That should provide maximum bug-compatibility without compromising usability. [Bug 70455] Re: dependencies seem incomplete
Two comments on this bug: The fact that none of the packages pulls in beid is not a bug, that's a feature. There are many ways in which one can use smartcards; PCSC Lite is only one of them, and the only one that requires pcscd. Depending on pcscd would be wrong, since you couldn't then purge it if you were using a smartcard that requires openct instead (such as mine). I'll add a comment to that effect to the description of future versions of the beid/belpic packages. Second, the libpcsclite dependency should've been pulled in by the shlibs system. If it isn't, then that's a bug in ubuntu on which I (the Debian maintainer for belpic) have no influence. It might also be the case that the libpcsclite message is harmless (provided you use openct), but I'm not sure about that bit. -- dependencies seem incomplete https://launchpad.net/bugs/70455 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 62308] Re: Permission Denied on nfs clients for only some files
Also here the NFS server is unusable. The bug is reported weeks before the edgy was released. A server without reliable nfs is useless and unacceptable for the majority of installations. Now edgy is released 2 weeks ago and this mission critical bug remains unfixed. Also the former kernel 2.6.17-6 has disappeared. Please provide a download link to the old version for a short time solution. If I couldn't solve the problem in my installation here, I have to drop edgy and go back to dapper (or maybe debian). -- Permission Denied on nfs clients for only some files https://launchpad.net/bugs/62308 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 62308] Re: Permission Denied on nfs clients for only some files
I didn't notice this bug until after I'd removed the old dapper kernels. This is especially difficult because I'm pitching Ubuntu + Xen as a server consolidation solution to management. Because they're dragging their feet on hardware purchases, I have some time, but as it stands right now, we cannot deploy Ubuntu. I'm thinking of perhaps using AFS instead, and selling it as a look at all these whiz features AFS has over NFS. -- Permission Denied on nfs clients for only some files https://launchpad.net/bugs/62308 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
