[Bug 73213] Videos do not work with an i810 GPU

2006-11-25 Thread Nils
Public bug reported:

Hi all,

I found several problems that are caused because composite is enabled
on Edgy if you don't explicitly disable it. For example, if you use
fglrx you are likely to run into trouble, because of it.

From the wiki [1]:

In Ubuntu Edgy the Composite extension is enabled by default, however,
fglrx does not yet support Composite with DRI. In order to to disable
Composite you have to edit the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file, so add these
lines at the end of xorg.conf:

Section Extensions
   Option Composite Disable
EndSection

At least it's documented, but you get annoyed until you have a look at
the wiki.. However, today I ran into a problem with an i810 GPU: It
was completely unable to display videos (excepted with mplayer -vo gl,
but that was too slow since DRI did not work too). Then I added the
same lines as above to the xorg.conf and it worked again.

I also tried get DRI working, but it did not (not sure if the driver
or the GPU supports it).

If I didn't ran in the issue with fglrx first, I'm not sure how much
time I would have wasted to get the video output running. I also think
that this is a major bug in the Edgy release that should not happen..

Nils

Also the update to mozilla-mplayer 3.31-5 installed galeon.
Here the output from synaptic history:

[Bug 71560] Re: Crash information collection depletes resources, clogs up and crashes system

2006-11-25 Thread Martin Pitt
For this reason the current maximum core dump size is 200 MB, and when
the crash happens, apport does not process the core dump in any way (and
does not load it into memory). Do you mean it already crashes your
system at the time when the crash happens?

apport does load the core dump when you ask to file a bug. There is no
way to avoid this, though.

I think it would clutter the report too much to include the md5sums, but
doing

So there is a dangling sym link. I have no idea what that means, nor any
idea how to get any of the programs Ubuntu comes with. So for 3 months I
have had Ubuntu on my computer and have not been able to use it. I am
very excited about Ubuntu's prospects, but I am still waiting to see
what it can do. can anyone tell me in normal end user speak how I solve
the problem of Samba not working properly? Thank you. Darteo

[Bug 71964] Re: Cannot Install Packages from CD and Need Internet Connection

2006-11-25 Thread clubsoda
Hi John,

Thanks for these additional instructions. Earlier today I needed
libc6-dev and when I went to install it a bizarre thing happened...
synaptic asked for the CD!!! That was a first! Strangely, nothing had
changed. A possible factor was that the first time I opened
Systems-Language_Support (several days ago) I got an error message
saying that the locale was not correctly installed, after which a lot of
stuff was downloaded from the net by the language support wizard,
including openoffice-core if I'm not mistaken.

Now on to your suggested work-around. After editing sources.list,
updating apt and reloading the package list (which must have been cached
because the CDROM didn't spin up), the list diminished to 882, of which
856 were installed. I was able to install the serial port driver from
the CD, so that part was working. However, uninstalled OpenOffice
packages didn't appear in the list. To prove the point, I uninstalled
OO-Calc, deleted its package from the apt cache and restarted synaptic.
It was gone.

This brought me full circle to the situation described in the first
post, i.e. AddRemove said the application list was out of date and would
display OO-Calc in the list but wouldn't install it, with the cannot be
installed on your computer type (i386) error again. After replacing
the net links in sources.list and updating the package list I could
reinstall OO-Calc but not from the CD.

At this point I have to ask a silly question - is OpenOffice actually on
the CD or is this my misunderstanding? If it is on the disc then
something is still wrong here. The extended partition and locale
problems may have been contributing factors but I don't think they can
be the reason the condition persists.

Sorry for so many words over something which seems less important with
each passing day. However, the ability to perform stand-alone
installations (without net access) is a very attractive feature, one
which Ubuntu seems to aim for but one which for whatever reason I
haven't been able to achieve with Xubuntu Edgy.

Thanks again for your assistance which is very much appreciated.
Cheers,
clubsoda

[Bug 72539] Re: Form wizard in OO base is broken.

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 72262 ***

I can confirm this as well. The ubuntu-version doesn't open any wizard.
But I got another version of OOo at http://www.ooodev.org:6969/.
It installs with version-number 2.0.4-5. And this works properly.

Hello,

I'm on a Ubuntu Edgy. I open OpenOffice.org Writer, write ciao in it,
select it, paste it into a chat window in gaim, and OpenOffice.org

This works both with middle-button pasting and using ^C/^V.

I also tried to paste in gedit, thunderbird and openoffice itself, and
in those cases it worked properly.

openoffice.org-writer is version 2.0.4-0ubuntu2

[Bug 71212] Re: System hangs when copying to NFS mounts

2006-11-25 Thread Surfraz Ahmed
After upgrading one of my workstations to edgy I had major problems with
NFS (/home drive mounted over NFS). Dapper workstations have not had any
problems.

I was only able to resolve the problem by compiling the 2.6.18.2 kernel
from kernel.org with the config from the edgy kernel.

If you have a terminal window open when the problem occurs you may see
some messages as mentioned in bug #65827 (or type dmesg when the problem
occurs). If so can you mark this bug as a duplicate of #65827?

[Bug 1] Re: Microsoft has a majority market share

2006-11-25 Thread gourou76
We have a slightly different problem in France. Machines in stores are
preinstalled with XP and Vista quite soon for a few reasons :

1. Training on Linux not generalized and not delivered by training centres
equally in ratio with MS courses.
2. People use XP at work and associated desktop applications. They do not
feel that they should use a different OS at home, hence be isolated in case of
problems.
3. Genrally, they do not buy these applications, they copy for personal
use and some editors allow this, antivirus for instance.
4. Primarily a language barrier problem, if one decides to go in at the
deep end.
5. Then, we get into Technical Support, most of the guys at the stores
don’t have a clue of what is Linux. The techies play games on XP, so why would
they learn Linux?
6. Solidarity InterLugs. Why would somebody making a search on a search
engine and discover interlugs wars for supremacy and control of X city be
interested to be part of these communities, hence trolls. Linux appears in the
eyes of the layman as an OS for a class of knowledgeable people to start with
and that some Lugs will go as far as hacking other lugs site in order to be
seen as _the_ lug of X city?
7. I have sort mentioned that earlier, games and applications, not the
same on both platforms.
8. OEM agreements for selling motherboards etc?

Just my two cents,
Cheers,
Jimmy

[Bug 73223] Hebrew text is not displayed correctly (Edgy Eft)

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

Way to reproduce:
1. Open OpenOffice.org word processor.
2. Make sure CTL is enabled and Hebrew is the CTL language:
- In the Tools menu, choose Options. In the options window choose
Language Settings -- Languages on the left panel.
- Make sure that Enabled for complex text layouts is marked.
- Make sure that under Default languages for documents the CTL
language is hebrew.
- Click OK to close the options window.
3. Switch to CTL text using right CTRL+Shift keys.
4. Switch to the Hebrew text layout in GNOME (make sure it is configured in
System--Preferences--Keyboard).
5. Type the text:
שלום לכם ילדים
היום אנחנו ננסה לעשות משהו ממש מגניב.

The resulting text is displayed such that one word overlaps other words.
I tried selecting the text and choosing different fonts, but it doesn't help.
It is still not displayed correctly and words still overlap other words.

2006/11/24, Andrew Montgomery [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

They remain entirely blank and to not revert to defaults.

 and it returns this:

Sound-juicer always insists it has no profiles - even if I add one

Where are the 'defaults' for profile_list you mention? And how do I
 restore them?

Maybe we should depend ubuntu-something on grub. (It's an idea)

Yes, I was trying to extract to a FAT :(

However, I think that we should turn on automatically the strip special
chars function when Sound Juicer tries to copy files to such
filesystems. The user could be warned by a popup, for example.

 apport (0.31) feisty; urgency=low
 .
   * Move scripts to bin/ in source package.
   * Add apport/python_hook.py: Default exception handler for Python, to create
apport reports for unhandled exceptions. Thanks to Robert Collins
[EMAIL PROTECTED] for this! Closes: LP#70957
   * Add new package python-apport to ship the new Python package 'apport'.
This includes the python crash hook for now, but in the near future
apport-utils will get redesigned and put into this package, too.
   * debian/control: apport now depends on python-apport instead of
 python-apport-utils.
   * apport_utils.py: Quiesce gdb error messages in test suite.

[Bug 67621] Re: crashes when ripping cd with no profile selected

2006-11-25 Thread Andrew Montgomery
I don't seem to have a profile_list key to right click on.

Clicking on /system/gstreamer/0.10/audio/global/ shows me an empty pane.

The pane is also empty for:
/system/gstreamer/0.10/audio/profiles/voicelossless
/system/gstreamer/0.10/audio/profiles/cdlossless
/system/gstreamer/0.10/audio/profiles/cdlossy
/system/gstreamer/0.10/audio/profiles/voicelossy

In fact, right clicking anything in the gconf-editor doesnt bring up a
'reset key' option, just an 'unset key' one.

Sound-juicer still currently does not work for me.

[Bug 69700] Re: .bash_profile never executed for graphical logins.

2006-11-25 Thread Nils Fredrik Gjerull
If .bash_profile is no longer useful for environment variables while
using GDM then perhaps the default .bash_profile in /etc/skel/ should be
changed and a .profile should be added. I have attached a file with an
example .profile and .bash_profile. Having good comments in .profile and
.bash_profile will save people a lot of time. This scheme works with the
new dash shell. (sourcing ~/.bashrc from ~/.profile do not because GDM
uses dash to source ~/.profile)

[Bug 73232] Sound error makes the game crash

2006-11-25 Thread Milka Jinka
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: solarwolf

This is a bug I've encountered for a long time (at least Hoary) in
various installs, and it's still here in Edgy.

- launch Solarwolf
- play it some time
- when you encounter for the first time a bonus, a pop-up explaning it appears,
with a sound
- the shield bonus (if I'm right) make the game crash with the following error
message:
==
pygame error:
music not loaded

File /usr/libgames/solarwolf/snd.py, Line 106, Function tweakmusicvolume
music.play(-1)
==

I think it comes from solarwolf but maybe it's pygame.

This bug occurs even when sound ans music are set to off in the options
menu.

[Bug 73171] Re: upgraded to Edgy, fonts have changed

2006-11-25 Thread gratefulfrog
following up on this issue, i discovered that the /etc/X11/xorg.conf
file contains a long list of wrong font paths since the upgrade to edgy.

After inspecting all the paths, I changed the font paths to all point to:
/usr/share/fonts/X11/font name

instead of the old paths which were:
/usr/lib/X11/fonts/...
and
/usr/share/X11/fonts/...

Maybe this fix could be automated in the upgrade procedure?

[Bug 73173] Re: upgraded to edgy: mplayer doesn't work

2006-11-25 Thread gratefulfrog
Sorry for the vague report, it was late, and I had been fighting with
edgy for hours...

The problem was that after upgrading, and re-installing both mplayer and
mozilla-mplayer plugin, neither of them would play video.

I have since compiled mplayer from source and installed in properly. this now
works as a standalone player,
however for the life of me I can't get the plugin to work in firefox 2

I've tried installing from ubuntu repositories, and building myself. The
build completes, but it won't work in firefox to play quicktime for
example... this might be a problem with the 32 bit binayr win codecs,
but I also run 32bit firefox and that won't work either...

Maybe I have to build a 32bit mplayer plugin?

Anyway, that's all the information I have. I realize that it doesn't
help you much and am sorry.

There are still problems with firefox and the plugins on 64bit - I was
hoping that these would be solved a year after 64bit processors are
available, but the sw houses just haven't come along yet.

I know that this is not Ubunutu's task!

I continue to support Ubuntu at all occaisions.

Cheers,
GF.

model name : Intel(R) Pentium(R) M processor 1.73GHz

$ sudo modprobe speedstep-centrino
FATAL: Error inserting speedstep_centrino
(/lib/modules/2.6.17-10-386/kernel/arch/i386/kernel/cpu/cpufreq/speedstep-centrino.ko):
 No such device

$ ls /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/
crash_notes

$ sudo cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/crash_notes
1ff6c800

Would the workaround with 'p4-clockmod' work with Pentium M?

[Bug 73236] sata_uli - second sata hard disk does not work properly.

2006-11-25 Thread Marco B
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.17-10-generic

I apologize for my very poor English.

Any device is /dev/sdb goes slowly and when it works the system is
unstable.

hdparm -tT /dev/sda /dev/sdb returns

/dev/sda:
 Timing cached reads: 1516 MB in 2.00 seconds = 756.88 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads: 198 MB in 3.01 seconds = 65.70 MB/sec

/dev/sdb:
 Timing cached reads: 1760 MB in 2.00 seconds = 878.71 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads:6 MB in 3.59 seconds = 1.67 MB/sec
^^

Also whit new kernel 2.6.19 i have the some problem.

Instead with kernel 2.6.15 (Dapper's kernel on Edge) it works properly:
hdparm -t /dev/sdb

/dev/sdb:
 Timing buffered disk reads: 178 MB in 3.00 seconds = 59.25 MB/sec

It's a Ubuntu bug and not a kernel bug because with other distribution
linux whit kernel 2.6.17 (as an example knoppix 5.10) it works.

Controller SATA is:

01:07.0 Mass storage controller: ALi Corporation ALi M5281 Serial ATA / RAID
Host Controller (rev a1)
01:07.1 Mass storage controller: ALi Corporation M5228 ALi ATA/RAID Controller
(rev c6)
