[Bug 73213] Videos do not work with an i810 GPU
Public bug reported: Hi all, I found several problems that are caused because composite is enabled on Edgy if you don't explicitly disable it. For example, if you use fglrx you are likely to run into trouble, because of it. From the wiki [1]: In Ubuntu Edgy the Composite extension is enabled by default, however, fglrx does not yet support Composite with DRI. In order to to disable Composite you have to edit the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file, so add these lines at the end of xorg.conf: Section Extensions Option Composite Disable EndSection At least it's documented, but you get annoyed until you have a look at the wiki.. However, today I ran into a problem with an i810 GPU: It was completely unable to display videos (excepted with mplayer -vo gl, but that was too slow since DRI did not work too). Then I added the same lines as above to the xorg.conf and it worked again. I also tried get DRI working, but it did not (not sure if the driver or the GPU supports it). If I didn't ran in the issue with fglrx first, I'm not sure how much time I would have wasted to get the video output running. I also think that this is a major bug in the Edgy release that should not happen.. For this reason the current maximum core dump size is 200 MB, and when the crash happens, apport does not process the core dump in any way (and does not load it into memory). Do you mean it already crashes your system at the time when the crash happens? apport does load the core dump when you ask to file a bug. [Bug 71964] Re: Cannot Install Packages from CD and Need Internet Connection
Hi John, Thanks for these additional instructions. Earlier today I needed libc6-dev and when I went to install it a bizarre thing happened... synaptic asked for the CD!!! That was a first! Strangely, nothing had changed. A possible factor was that the first time I opened Systems-Language_Support (several days ago) I got an error message saying that the locale was not correctly installed, after which a lot of stuff was downloaded from the net by the language support wizard, including openoffice-core if I'm not mistaken. Now on to your suggested work-around. After editing sources.list, updating apt and reloading the package list (which must have been cached because the CDROM didn't spin up), the list diminished to 882, of which 856 were installed. I was able to install the serial port driver from the CD, so that part was working. However, uninstalled OpenOffice packages didn't appear in the list. To prove the point, I uninstalled OO-Calc, deleted its package from the apt cache and restarted synaptic. It was gone. This brought me full circle to the situation described in the first post, i.e. AddRemove said the application list was out of date and would display OO-Calc in the list but wouldn't install it, with the cannot be installed on your computer type (i386) error again. After replacing the net links in sources.list and updating the package list I could reinstall OO-Calc but not from the CD. At this point I have to ask a silly question - is OpenOffice actually on the CD or is this my misunderstanding? If it is on the disc then something is still wrong here. The extended partition and locale problems may have been contributing factors but I don't think they can be the reason the condition persists. Sorry for so many words over something which seems less important with each passing day. However, the ability to perform stand-alone installations (without net access) is a very attractive feature, one which Ubuntu seems to aim for but one which for whatever reason I haven't been able to achieve with Xubuntu Edgy. Thanks again for your assistance which is very much appreciated. [Bug 1] Re: Microsoft has a majority market share
We have a slightly different problem in France. Machines in stores are preinstalled with XP and Vista quite soon for a few reasons : 1. Training on Linux not generalized and not delivered by training centres equally in ratio with MS courses. 2. People use XP at work and associated desktop applications. They do not feel that they should use a different OS at home, hence be isolated in case of problems. 3. Genrally, they do not buy these applications, they copy for personal use and some editors allow this, antivirus for instance. 4. Primarily a language barrier problem, if one decides to go in at the deep end. 5. Then, we get into Technical Support, most of the guys at the stores don’t have a clue of what is Linux. The techies play games on XP, so why would they learn Linux? 6. Solidarity InterLugs. Why would somebody making a search on a search engine and discover interlugs wars for supremacy and control of X city be interested to be part of these communities, hence trolls. Linux appears in the eyes of the layman as an OS for a class of knowledgeable people to start with and that some Lugs will go as far as hacking other lugs site in order to be seen as _the_ lug of X city? 7. I have sort mentioned that earlier, games and applications, not the same on both platforms. 8. OEM agreements for selling motherboards etc? [Bug 69700] Re: .bash_profile never executed for graphical logins.
If .bash_profile is no longer useful for environment variables while using GDM then perhaps the default .bash_profile in /etc/skel/ should be changed and a .profile should be added. I have attached a file with an example .profile and .bash_profile. Having good comments in .profile and .bash_profile will save people a lot of time. This scheme works with the new dash shell. (sourcing ~/.bashrc from ~/.profile do not because GDM uses dash to source ~/.profile) ** Attachment added: Example .profile and .bash_profile http://librarian.launchpad.net/5170591/profiles.txt -- .bash_profile never executed for graphical logins. https://launchpad.net/bugs/69700 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 73232] Sound error makes the game crash
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: solarwolf This is a bug I've encountered for a long time (at least Hoary) in various installs, and it's still here in Edgy. - launch Solarwolf - play it some time - when you encounter for the first time a bonus, a pop-up explaning it appears, with a sound - the shield bonus (if I'm right) make the game crash with the following error message: == pygame error: music not loaded File /usr/libgames/solarwolf/snd.py, Line 106, Function tweakmusicvolume music.play(-1) == I think it comes from solarwolf but maybe it's pygame. This bug occurs even when sound ans music are set to off in the options menu. ** Affects: solarwolf (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- Sound error makes the game crash https://launchpad.net/bugs/73232 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 73171] Re: upgraded to Edgy, fonts have changed
following up on this issue, i discovered that the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file contains a long list of wrong font paths since the upgrade to edgy. After inspecting all the paths, I changed the font paths to all point to: /usr/share/fonts/X11/font name instead of the old paths which were: /usr/lib/X11/fonts/... and /usr/share/X11/fonts/... Maybe this fix could be automated in the upgrade procedure? [Bug 73173] Re: upgraded to edgy: mplayer doesn't work
Sorry for the vague report, it was late, and I had been fighting with edgy for hours... The problem was that after upgrading, and re-installing both mplayer and mozilla-mplayer plugin, neither of them would play video. I have since compiled mplayer from source and installed in properly. this now works as a standalone player, however for the life of me I can't get the plugin to work in firefox 2 I've tried installing from ubuntu repositories, and building myself. The build completes, but it won't work in firefox to play quicktime for example... this might be a problem with the 32 bit binayr win codecs, but I also run 32bit firefox and that won't work either... Maybe I have to build a 32bit mplayer plugin? Anyway, that's all the information I have. I realize that it doesn't help you much and am sorry. There are still problems with firefox and the plugins on 64bit - I was hoping that these would be solved a year after 64bit processors are available, but the sw houses just haven't come along yet. I know that this is not Ubunutu's task! I continue to support Ubuntu at all occaisions.
