[Bug 78548] Logitech TrackMan Wheel goes wonky after upgrading (Edgy/6.10 updates)

2007-01-09 Thread Daniel Dickinson
Public bug reported:

After upgrading packages due for upgrades my Logitech TrackMan Wheel
trackball exhibits bizarre behaviour. The mouse jumps all over the
screen, and button events happen at random (well really due to
misinterpreting the mouse events I suspect). Switching to an acer mouse
I had lying around, works for now, but I really like my trackball. I
have previously noticed and reported (but to debian not xubuntu
obviously) this behaviour when I was running Debian Etch and upgraded to
the 2.6.17 kernel (and I think at that time that was the only change I
made). So this could be a kernel problem, a suspicion which is
supported by the fact that gdm in the console is also affected.

This is under Edgy Eft (6.10) of Xubuntu

[Bug 78330] Re: b44.ko driver does not work in Ubuntu 6.06 and Dell laptop

2007-01-09 Thread Blaisorblade
Today I've downloaded the Ubuntu kernel source, replaced b44.[ch] with
the copy from 2.6.18.6, undone a single API change by running the
following command on a recent git repository (= 2.6.18):

$ cg diff -pr 1fb9df5d3069064c037c81c0ab8bf783ffa5e373 drivers/net/b44.c \
 |patch -R ../linux-source-2.6.15-2.6.15/drivers/net/b44.c

and rebuilt the resulting kernel with make-kpkg. The ethernet card,
then, worked flawlessly. Do you need a bisection search for the exact
patch solving the bug or it is ok for you to backport all changes as I
did?

2007-01-09 Thread Matthias Urlichs
(Almost) the same thing happens if you create a new feisty installation
using (e.g.) debootstrap.

The reason for this problem appears to be that the postinst script
unconditionally runs

setupcon --force --save

at the end. This messes up the X display. Switching to text mode and
back into X cures the display anomaly, but ...

Why is that call there, anyway? It definitely doesn't belong into a

[Bug 38181] Re: Screensaver freezes on Dapper (ATI Radeon 8500 LE)

2007-01-09 Thread Jani Juvan
I can confirm that this problem still exists on the edgy eft. I have a fresh
install of 6.10 and am using a Matrox G550 AGP card with default xorg drivers.
I get this problem when selecting certain screensavers in Screensaver
Preferences. Most screensavers do not give any preview and instead hang the
Screensaver Preferences window after a while. If this screensaver remains
selected and is activated when machine is idle it results in a complete hanging
of the system only fixed by doing a cold boot.
Fortunately the screensaver can be reset to blank-only with gconf-editor. Maybe
I have been unlucky, but the only screensaver I have managed to get to work is
the FiberLamp one, although I have not done thorough testing.

Hope you guys solve it soon.

[Bug 78552] /sbin/update-grub complains about being run instead of /usr/sbin/update-grub

Which flash package do you have installed?
Which Java package do you have installed?
Which firefox extensions do you have installed?

I suspect this is due to Java, which Azureus is built on.

[Bug 78554] Lightning Installation on Ubuntu Edgy

2007-01-09 Thread Andy Coulson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mozilla-thunderbird

Thunderbird Version 1.5.0.9 and Firefox 2.0.0.1.
The bug report relates to the following:
Go into Extensions in Thunderbird. Select manual filename entry and paste in
the web address of the Lightning XPI file for linux x86 and select open -
thunderbird crashes with the bug report below.

Why am I doing it this way? following the Download link for Linux from

[Bug 78552] Re: /sbin/update-grub complains about being run instead of /usr/sbin/update-grub

2007-01-09 Thread chantra
More exactly, the message is as follow:

Running postrm hook script /sbin/update-grub.
Your /etc/kernel-img.conf needs to be updated. Read grub's NEWS.Debian[1]
file and follow its instructions.

 1. /usr/share/doc/grub/NEWS.Debian.gz

You shouldn't call /sbin/update-grub. Please call /usr/sbin/update-grub instead!

Searching for GRUB installation directory ... found: /boot/grub

Looking at /usr/share/doc/grub/NEWS.Debian.gz, /sbin/update-grub has
been moved to /usr/sbin/update-grub

NEWS.Debian.gz says that you _must_ edit /etc/kernel-img.conf and change:
 postinst_hook = /sbin/update-grub
 postrm_hook   = /sbin/update-grub

to
postinst_hook = /usr/sbin/update-grub
postrm_hook   = /usr/sbin/update-grub

In the meanwhile, a wrapper is provided to keep backward compatibility.

I don't know yet if kernel-img.conf will be automatically updated in a close
future so I change this bug status to confirmed.
I believe people installing brand new feisty will get their kernel-img.conf
properly configured.

[Bug 44702] Re: gdmsetup: no error message when choice rejected

2007-01-09 Thread Daniel Holbach
 gdm (2.17.5-0ubuntu1) feisty; urgency=low
 .
   * New upstream release:
 - No longer close file descripters in forked process which shows dialog
boxes since this causes the dialogs to not display any text.
 - Now GDM will recognize when the system default language has changed and
will display new GUI's with the new default language. By default the
/var/sysconfig/i18n file is assumed to have the language defined in
LANG=foo format. The --with-lang-file configure option may be needed
to specify a different system language configuration file. On Solaris,
for example, it would be /etc/default/init.
 - Remove filter_watch after it is called for the first time. This filter
is used to start the at_spi_registryd, but after it is started there is
no need to listen to the propery any more.
 - Further improvements to gdmsetup to improve usability. (Malone: #44702)
 - No longer hardcode invisible_char property in glade files, instead
   realy on GTK+ default.
 - Fix so that the userlist is hidden properly when there are no users.
 - Fixes for compiling with gcc 2.95.
 - Translation updates.
   * debian/patches/40_tiny_manpage_fix.patch:
 - fix gdm manpage has not updated for the distribution changes (Malone:
   #18709)

[Bug 78555] Broken mixer behaviour on Intel HDA on Dell DXP051 machine

[Bug 78510] Re: file dialog cuts filename

2007-01-09 Thread manu
Hi Alex,

I am using firefox in Edgy. You don't need to press tab, autocompletion
should show you foo when you write f if there is no other files in
/home/alex that start with f (it does for me). Then, you write b and it
auto-completes to foobarbar. Then you hit enter to accept this and the
filename turns out to be just foo.

Moreover, I can reproduce it also in Dapper just here in launchpad.
Click in Browse in the Include attachment thing. The press Ctrl+L to
bring up the Open Location dialog (in Edgy this is always shown). Then
write Exa and it will autocomplete to Examples/ and put the cursor after
the slash, then write k and it will autocomplete to kubuntu-leaflet.png
then hit enter and it will try to open Examples/k . I can reproduce this
as often as I wish.

with the very first CD boot menu (which is a gfxboot issue).

[Bug 78510] Re: file dialog cuts filename

2007-01-09 Thread Alex Latchford
Howdy manu,

I can reproduce this, however I am unsure of exactly what the expected
behaviour should be here, what would you do to change this, because in
all honesty I cannot see a viable method of selecting past there without
having to manually type in the next letter, which appears to work
perfectly, as a result of this I am going to close this as will not fix.

If you can provide a solution to this problem then feel free to reopen
it, however I cannot see how this behaviour can be changed to select the
correct file..

Thanks again, Alex.

[Bug 61946] Re: [Edgy Data Loss] umount progress dialog missing

I continue to NOT understand why this bug is ignored and also why a
simple workaround is not taken.

We are not talking about a simple crash but DATA LOSS.
This is even worse than security issue in certain cases, and the bug is 4
months old!

I think Kubuntu can be called unstable or unsafe at this point, better
switch to other solutions.

[Bug 78554] Re: Lightning Installation on Ubuntu Edgy

2007-01-09 Thread Alex Latchford
Hello Andy,

I am unsure of the exact method in which manual filename entry for add-
ons is supposed to work, however I am around 99% certain it is only
designed to work with local files, can you try downloading the .xpi file
to your local machine and then installing the add-on using that copy and
not the one found on the net.

Also could you link me to the .xpi file as I would like to try to
reproduce the problem myself.

Thanks again, Alex.

[Bug 54459] Re: Crash on (or just after) connect to MSN

2007-01-09 Thread Sebastien Bacher
most of those crash files are different problems, could people open new
bugs when they are not sure of if they face the same problem rather than
commenting on random bugs, that's confusing for people working on the
bug

[Bug 72662] Re: nm-applet kills itself, restarts when connecting to wireless AP

2007-01-09 Thread sheepeatingtaz
I can confirm this problem in Edgy. This was the same in KDE with
knetworkmanager until updating at the end of last week. It works fine
from a fresh install (both KDE and Gnome) but running aptitude (or apt-
get) upgrade (or dist-upgrade) means it will not work on next boot.
