[Bug 106431] openoffice draw not enabled in menu

2007-04-14 Thread guitara
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org-draw

Just wondering why openoffice-draw, though installed by default, is not
found in the office menu, nor enabled? It is found in the graphics
menu, but only if you use alacarte to enable it. Why would you disable
the desktop application entry by default? I didn't even knew it existed,
till i tried to install, and apt told me it was installed. I suppose
having it in the graphics menu isn't irrational either, but it should at
least be enabled by default.

[Bug 106434] 2.6.20-15-generic breaks X when using NVIDIA-glx drivers

2007-04-14 Thread daimoni
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nvidia-glx

As summary says...

I just installed newest updates with update-manager, and kernel
nvidia-glx also updated.

After upgrade to 2.6.20-15-generic (nvidia-glx was updated too) X fails
to start with no screens found, and says failed to load NVIDIA kernel
module. Nvidia-glx did update with update manager too though.

Booting back to 2.6.20-14-generic makes X work again.

[Bug 53923] Re: tifm: Texas Instruments Card reader not working

2007-04-14 Thread Andrew Waldram
OK guys lets be clear

If you have a TIFM reader that doesn't work with .7 tifm modules(
standard 2.6.20) then unless you have

A. compiled .8 following the instructions above
or
B. Switched over to the SDHCI module using the setpci command see above.

Then as you don't have a working driver for your card the fact that auto
mount is now fixed is of no use to you as you have nothing to mount.

A quick check is run dmesg from a command prompt and see if your getting
io errors when card inserted if you are you need to do a or b above.

What would be nice is anyone using the setpci have to report if auto
mount is now working, it should be as the fix was in the mmc core stuff.

as far as I can see the only bug outstanding is that the stock tifm
modules are broken and should be replaced with the tifm developer fixed
version, Whether this should be done by the feisty developers I'm not
sure as really its an upstream bug (fixed in 2.6.21).

Maybe they'll take pity on you and do it .

[Bug 106435] 2.6.20-14-generic doesn't boot anymore

2007-04-14 Thread Fridtjof Busse
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.20-14-generic

After the last kernelupdate, my Dell Optiplex 745 doesn't boot anymore, not
even in recovery mode.
The systems is unable to open the root filesystem and drops me to a less than
working initramfs-shell.
The system has a UUID for booting, but even setting it to /dev/sda2 doesn't

Re: [Bug 106121] Re: feisty - this morning software updates: tty not turned on

2007-04-14 Thread Andrew Frank
i cannot update, because
- the lifecd of 7.04 does not allow sudo chroot -- i think this is a
bug, because it makes the life cd not usable for rescue operations

- apt seems to have changed configuration between 6.10 (what i am
currently running) and 7.04 as the location of the look file is changed
from /var/lib/apt/lists to var/lib. i am afraid other aspects have
changed too.. where is the configuration file for apt?
i think here is a bug in apt: after chroot apt should read the
configuration from the current root file system.

i have posted the lspci already (made from a 6.10 kernel)

thank you for your help
andrew

ps. before i install 7.04 afresh - what is the recommended approach to
install more than one ubuntu on the same disk? any hint to
documentation? thanks a lot!

[Bug 3731] Re: Xorg can't load another resolution

2007-04-14 Thread Bryce Harrington
It sounds like the problem here is that dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg is
failing to generate correct information for the monitor section of the
config file.

In each user's case, the h/v frequencies were either missing or set
incorrectly. Xorg had difficulty determining a proper mode to use, and
fell back to 640x480.

3zero2, I suspect your issue is completely unrelated, since you are able
to achieve 1024x768 unlike the original bug reporter. Many others have
reported that Ubuntu's Xorg settings max out at 1024x768, so I think
your issue is simply a duplicate of that one. Thanks for offering to
collect more info, but I think this one is already sufficiently well
reported. Hopefully we'll figure out a fix soon.

** Summary changed:

- Xorg can't load another resolution
+ Xorg resolution falling back to 640x480 when h/v freqs incorrect

[Bug 85488] Re: Canon Lide25 (plustek backend) scanner does not scan via gui

2007-04-14 Thread ianrose
The kernel has gone from 2.6.20-14 to 2.6.20-15, but this regression is
still unfixed - like a large number of people I bought this hardware
specifically due to its mature support under linux. I don't really
understand why experimental suspend/resume functionality for laptops

[Bug 106439] Disk utilities report incorrect used and free space

2007-04-14 Thread Patrick K
Public bug reported:

All the disk utilities I have running under Edgy (Gnome) misread the free and
used space on one partition in particular (a couple others are incorrect, too,
but not by nearly as much). I haven't had any luck getting an answer on
UbuntuForum.org. Here is the thread:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=372324

The main problem is: the partition (FAT32) is about 36 GB and I have
over 21 GB of files on this partition. However, all the provided disk
utilities plus an installed version of GParted show the used space as
about 850MB and the free space as 35.3GB. The only exception is the
property sheet in Nautilus which shows the used space correctly (21.1GB)
but still shows the free space as 35.3 GB. I ran GParted from the Ubuntu
LiveCD and it read the partition information correctly. Windows98 reads
the partition correctly. I have no problems at this time reading or
writing to this partition. I am concerned that problems could arise and
would like to fix this. Screenshots and results of various commands are
posted in the above link.

[Bug 16887] Re: [i810] won't do lower modes on default laptop sync ranges

2007-04-14 Thread Bryce Harrington
While this does seem to be the opposite of the more typically reported
issue of higher resolutions not being available, the underlying cause
might be the same. I suspect the issue is that the monitor's h/v
frequences are not getting set up correctly in the xorg.conf file, and
Xorg figures out some arbitrary resolution that happens to work, but
other expected resolutions can't be seen.

If this is true, then this bug is a dupe of 3731.

The workaround is to a) manually update your xorg.conf and specify the
horizontal and vertical sync freqs, and b) make sure the
desired/supported resultions for your card are listed in the Mode lines.

The proper solution to this bug will require additional research...

[Bug 95880] Re: X.org randomly picks 800x600 on a monitor capable of doing 1024x768

2007-04-14 Thread Bryce Harrington
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 3731 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/3731

Thanks for the bug report!

While the symptoms are a little different, this appears to be a dupe of
3731. The root issue is that Ubuntu failed to detect the hsync and
vrefresh freqs for your monitor, and since they weren't listed in the
xorg conf file, Xorg made some incorrect assumptions about them. With
this incomplete information, Xorg sometimes decides to use 1024x768, and
other times 800x600.

Notice in your xorg.conf file that the h/v rates aren't listed. A
workaround would be to use the rates shown in your xresprobe tests (or
look them up in your monitor's documentation) and add them to the
monitor section of your xorg.conf file.

A true solution would be to fix whatever misdetected your monitor in the
first place; since that's the goal for bug 3731, I'm marking this a dupe
of that one. Please let me know if you have more info or think I'm on
the wrong track here. :-)

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 3731 ***

Like Daniel says, this seems to be a dupe of a bug with xorg not
detecting the right resolution, probably because of incorrect sync
rates. It'd be helpful to see the files Timo specified, but lacking
those, I'm marking this as a dupe.

followed by a kernelpanic at bootup. This allway happens while the kernel tries
to initialize my two sata-discs connected to my nvidia nforce4 sata-controller.
(sata_nv) The panic is so early in he bootup process that I'm not able to
provide you with an detailed logfile (maybe you can tell me how to get one?)
but I made some screenshots with my mobile phone - maybe they can help you.

The machine check error says, that this error is a hardware error, but I
don't believe that. My Hardware worked quite excellent with every feisty
kernel from i386 and it works perfectly with 2.6.20-12 from feisty
amd64. I hope you can provide a fix for me ...

Greetings,

Mathias

[Bug 106442] PS/2 mouse keyboard not working

2007-04-14 Thread ChrisK
Public bug reported:

Firstly, know that I am completely new to Linux. I am trying to install
Ubuntu on a new desktop. I downloaded the Live CD (6.10) burned it.
Booted with it, then I get the boot menu (install, safe mode, test mem
etc). I then continue with the first option booting live to install.
After Ubuntu loads (to where I can see the Install icon) there is no
response from either the keyboard or the mouse (bith PS/2). The only
thing I can do is press the power button, but keyboard and mouse still
doesn't work, so I can't even shut down properly. Reset is then the only
option.

The system specs:
Pentium 4 3.2GHz, 512 memory
Gigabyte motherboard, keyboard and mouse

Wine 0.9.35 came out today, and I've already uploaded it. 0.9.35 should

[Bug 85488] Re: Canon Lide25 (plustek backend) scanner does not scan via gui

2007-04-14 Thread ianrose
Workaround to enable GUI tools:
I can use the command line workaround mentioned earlier, but it isn't
acceptable for the rest of my family. I have written a short shell script that
prods the scanner every second and stops after around 15-20 minutes. This
enables the standard GUI scanner utitlities (Kooka and so on) to work.
Apologies for the quality of the solution, as I am far from a skilled technical
type, however I don't think anyone is likely to sort this problem out so close
to release.

1. Find the device using lsusb:
for me:
Bus 001 Device 004: ID 04a9:220d Canon, Inc. CanoScan N670U/N676U/LiDE 20

so my scanner is on bus 001, device 004 - these numbers are used in the
wake-up script as follows:

#!/bin/sh
echo prodding scanner begins ...
 for i in `seq 1 1000`;
do
cat /dev/bus/usb/001/004 /dev/null
sleep 1
done
echo scanner is now having a nice rest...

save the above as scantouch.sh. Activate the script by typing sh
scantouch.sh - while the script is running (around 17 minutes max), the GUI
scanner utilities can be used. Thanks to this horrible hack, my wife is able to
get on with her work, and my ears no longer ring!

Warning: This worked for me, it might not for you, it might not be safe,
there are surely better ways of doing this.

kernel: 2.6.20-14.22-generic
arch: i386

Hi,

I've got an intel e6400 and acpi_cpufreq detects the cpu with two
frequencies: 600 and 800 MHz.

Onload management works, running burnP6 the CPU gets clocked to 800.

** Affects: linux-source-2.6.20 (Ubuntu)

[Bug 52314] Re: Cannot use 1400x900 screen resolution for nvidia Ge 6800

2007-04-14 Thread Bryce Harrington
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 49827 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/49827

This sounds like a dupe of 49827, although I'm not sure why it would
start to work by changing the driver...

[Bug 49827] Re: Available resolutions incompletely set to 1024x768, 800x600, 640x480

2007-04-14 Thread Bryce Harrington
** Summary changed:

- 1280x800 resolution isn't detected
+ Available resolutions incompletely set to 1024x768, 800x600, 640x480

** Description changed:

I've installed Kubuntu 6.06 LTS on my Acer Aspire 1524 which carries a
NVidia GeForce FX Go 5700 and the screen resolution is 1280x800.

After the install process, the default screen resolution is set to
1024x768 and there isn't an option available in KDE's display system
settings to change it to 1280x800, which in effect forces the computer
to be stuck with an unnatural screen resolution.
+
+ [Many people are reporting this bug - Ubuntu is only providing the
+ resolutions 1024x768, 800x600, and 640x480, when the user's system ought
+ to support other resolutions beyond these.]

** Changed in: xorg (Ubuntu)
   Importance: Undecided = High

[Bug 105714] Re: KlamAV crashes if software auto-update service is enabled

2007-04-14 Thread Odd Rune S . Lykkebø
I was unable to reproduce this on my system (feisty i386 beta), but no
matter; I agree with Scott, this shouldn't really be here in the first
place. Removing this takes no time; but should we put in a informative
label there instead, or just keep it blank?

 Grate.

It worked both at my Dell Optiplex and a Compaq Armada Laptop, solving the

Will that be the next binary distributed as upgrade? I have other machines
with the same behavior but since its not that critical, I was willing to
wait a bit longer for the proper path upgrades.

note that this machine has only eth0 ( wired) - but was exhibiting this

Thanks Scott - will now try the same on my iBook with bcm43xx wireless

I'm *wireless*, and it's *not* fixed for me.
Im using 7.04 upgraded thru 2.6.20-15.24, including the latest NM upgrade.

My network functions just fine, but
I get no status information at all from NM.

How is it that this thread has the heading *Fix Released*, anyway?
