[Bug 110474] There is no direct upgrade path from LTS to feisty
Public bug reported: If conservative users are supposed to stay with the Long Term Support version of Ubuntu, an upgrade path from this version of the distribution to each new version should be provided. A major appeal in using Ubuntu for me is the ease of distribution upgrades, which I found not as easy in other distributions. Not providing an upgrade path from LTS to feisty seems like wasting an opportunity to me. ** Affects: Ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- There is no direct upgrade path from LTS to feisty https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/110474 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 110361] Re: New feisty 64bit install causes nvidia card failure
Thanks for the kind words and prompt reply. I know how frustrating a lack of information can be (I answer support tickets in launchpad). Just to clarify, this problem _started_ at the point I installed Ubuntu Feisty 64-bit with the NVidia driver 9631 from the Ubuntu repository. As far as the driver goes, I can easily remove the manually installed driver and go back to nvidia-glx (9631) or nvidia-glx-new (9755) to comply with requirements to get support through launchpad, and will flick back to the manual driver to get support from NVidia if that is required. I can easily switch between the drivers - I have had quite a bit of practice over the years ;) I get _nothing_ on the display _from_ _boot_. No BIOS splash, no memory count, no scan of USB devices - nothing at all. This is all before grub / linux loads. The flat panels indicate there is no signal. I refuse to believe that it is merely hardware failure of _both_ cards at the same time. I am more willing to suspect that the 9631 driver has done something to the cards, put them into a funny state. My main gripe is that this was a plain blank install of Ubuntu, all I did is what anyone who has two displays and would like twinview to work would do, install the binary driver from the repository. That's when it all went wrong. I will give the UseDisplayDevice option a try and report back. -- New feisty 64bit install causes nvidia card failure https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/110361 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 109927] Re: /etc/bash_completion reports script as being in the wrong location
I've only first noticed it to submit a big for Feisty. Since I'm using Feisty from a reinstall rather than upgrade, I don't know for sure. I did notice the version of ProofGeneral (too old for my needs) included in the distribution installs the script in /usr/bin rather than /use/local/bin. For whatever reason, it now works (I can run proofgeneral from /use/local/bin). So this is a transient error (which I find more disturbing in that I don't know why it didn't work before, or whether it will continue to work). -- /etc/bash_completion reports script as being in the wrong location https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/109927 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 108687] Re: Linksys WUSB 11 v. 2.6 and WPC11 v. 4 don't work in Feisty
It looks like the WPC11 v. 4 bug is moving ahead under another number (Bug #99651), so I'll focus on the WUSB 11 v. 2.6 problem. I reinstalled Feisty to get the required information for the kernel devs (dmesg, lspci, etc), plugged in the adapter, and the computer froze hard. . . no keyboard, no touchpad, no mouse, no restarting X--only turning it off with the power button. Unplugged the adapter, rebooted, plugged adapter back in. . . same thing. Unplugged the adapter, and turned the laptop off. Plugged in the adapter, started the computer up - kernel panic. So, of all the things requested by the kernel devs, the only thing I can supply is a uname: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:/etc/network$ uname -a Linux ubuntu 2.6.20-15-generic #2 SMP Sun Apr 15 07:36:31 UTC 2007 i686 GNU/Linux With this new info, I think the bug should probably be moved to kernel. [Bug 37120] Re: rt2500 driver does not implement wireless extensions correctly
Let me clarify: rt2500 (note the 5) is the old driver which does not support the wireless extensions and which is included in Ubuntu. It is the driver in question here which is causing people grief. It is not being actively developed because all efforts are going into completing the new driver. rt2x00 (note the x) is the new driver which is not yet completed and is largely unusable at the moment (YMMV). It is being very actively developed and will surely implement the wireless extensions correctly when it becomes stable. The developers are working closely with upstream (kernel) and you will see the driver show up in the main kernel when it is ready. There's a good chance you won't see it in Ubuntu for another year. I have no knowledge as to how much work it would take to implement the extensions in the rt2500 (old) driver but I am reasonably sure that the patch will be gratefully accepted upstream if it is complete and of good quality. My personal opinion is that it would be worth while for someone to implement the wireless extensions in the old driver. I'm biased though because I use several RT2500s and because I am pessimistic about the time it may take for the new driver to be completed. I could be wrong. I recall a complaint on planet.gnome.org some time ago about another driver that was missing WEXT which was answered almost immediately by a hacker posting a patch for it. I'll bet if the SABDFL said that it should be done it would take one of his excellent kernel hackers less than a week to get it working. -- rt2500 driver does not implement wireless extensions correctly https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/37120 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 63418] Re: CPU soft lockup during boot if ipw3945 kill switch is on
Ok, just in case it helps anyone. I had a really ugly soft lockup on my desktop. It is running the Feisty release version. The install failed while booting the live disk, as the xserver was unable to start. So I booted the live disk in Safe Graphics Mode and everything worked fine using the standard xorg VESA display driver. Now that I've got a nice Radeon X1600 (RV530LE) PCIe card, I installed the fglrx out of the Feisty apt repository. Everything just standard. But it totally wrecked the machine. Using the fglrx driver I got a soft lockup at starting arbitrary programms. Sometimes even while loading the gnome session itself. To check if it had anything to do with compiz and the nice wobbling windows (that couldn't even be activated) I removed compiz and used the standard metacity window manager. Nothing changed. I still had lockups everytime I started an X session. So finally I suspected the darn fglrx and removed it from the system, reenabling the vesa driver and - rataplan - no lockups ever since:-) Yeehaw! Got my system back. So if anyone is experiencing this really annoying bug, CHECK IF YOU GOT THE FGLRX INSTALLED AND ACTIVATED. IF SO, REMOVE IT AND TRY AGAIN. Anyhow I also noticed it is related to some other drivers as well, but this time it was the fglrx for sure, so give it a try without it. good luck to all of you having a lockup on your machine greetings sven Output of lspci -v, lsmod, uname -a, cat /proc/cpuinfo; cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf attached in the text file Note: The output of lsmod and xorg.conf are made without the fglrx driver. [Bug 13530] Re: nvidia-glx crashes/lockups
It's not GNOME generally, so much as the XRender Cairo backend. The NVidia driver seems to have trouble with power management when switching between (or simultaneously using) XRender and OpenGL. If one of these is avoided, there are no issues. Note that many users report more success when using a GL-based desktop, perhaps indicating the problem is with context swtiching between 2D and 3D acceleration. [Bug 26572] Re: k3b locks up on searching for devices after running app 1st time on 2.6.12-10-686-smp
I have had this problem resolved in the last week after submitting a bug report to the k3b developer (Sebastian Trueg). I was able to narrow the problem to k3b due to changing my CDRW to a DVDRW drive on my PC. Apparently there was a problem with the way k3b was communicating with the hardware (SCSI commands) and this showed up only on some hardware hence not everyone experienced it. Ubuntu currently provides version 0.12 of k3b in the repositories. I was instructed to compile the latest version (V1.0) of k3b and this continued to have the same problem. I was then sent a patch which fixed the problem - I can now run k3b reliably. The latest version of k3b now has this patch (v1.0.1) and this can be found here: http://k3b.plainblack.com/download Instructions on compiling are provided from this page and I have compiled and used k3b successfully in Ubuntu 6.06. [Bug 107571] Re: Banshee crashes when deleting files from disk
There may be several issues that could take their role in this crash: 1) My MP3 files are on external USB drive, that is automatically mounted by Ubuntu 2) I use smart-playlists (by search) to organize my mp3 file. deleting a file in a playlist makes banshee crash after the 3rd or 4th file ... [Bug 110474] Re: There is no direct upgrade path from LTS to feisty
Thank you for your bug report. Conservative users are supposed to stay on the LTS version until the next LTS version (probably the version released in spring 2008). For the less conservative users they will upgrade every 6 months to the next version available and would have already been on Edgy by the time Feisty was available. So upgrading directly from Dapper to Feisty, skipping Edgy, doesn't fit either scenario, and is not officially supported. [Bug 110361] Re: New feisty 64bit install causes nvidia card failure
Hmm just reread - no BIOS splash! That's pretty bad. Nothing the nvidia binary driver can do should last over a reboot though (of course I don't know whether it is capable of flashing the video BIOS but I'd be highly surprised). I can't even begin to imagine what's happened here but I'd get in contact with NVIDIA (http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/1.0-9755/README/chapter-06.html ) about this ... [Bug 110484] k3b causes system freeze
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: k3b I wanted to write a dvd at 16x, no multisession, verify data after write. I managed to write one, it got verified, all went ok. Then I wanted to write a second dvd using the same setup. 5 minutes after the write started, k3b crashed (and some other open applications went down with it). The system froze. I could still move the mouse, but couldn't open any application. But the dvd kept spinning, as if it were still written. I left it about 10 minutes or so, with no change (disk still spinning). I rebooted the system using Alt + SysRq + R, S, E, I, U, B. But the dvd was still spinning ... I had to shutdown in order to make it stop. I have an LG dvd writer. Os is Kubuntu Feisty on 32 bits, it's an upgrade from edgy. [Bug 110483] Display Bug after Energy-Savings-Display-Off
Public bug reported: On a Lenovo/IBM Thinkpad R60 Laptop running Ubuntu 7.04 recently upgraded from 6.10 the following problem has been discovered After the display wakes up/resumes from a Energy-Savings-Off-State (into which the display enters on Laptop-Close or 11min of inactivity) the display is not restored properly: I.e. the screen is way darker (propably 60% darker) and Icons and Fonts are partially black making the display almost unreadable. Changing to TTY1 (CTRL-ALT-F1) and switching back to X (CTRL-ALT-F7) does not repair the display. Restarting X by hitting CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE fixes the problem. [Bug 110482] Gnome restores session with windows missing title and surround
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome I have this problem since upgrading from Edgy to Feisty. When I log out of Gnome and log back in, it tries to restore the apps and windows I had open when I logged out. [Bug 110361] Re: New feisty 64bit install causes nvidia card failure
I can't see anything at all, imagine you had unplugged the screen and booted a PC. That's what I see :) I know it boots because I waited until the disk went idle and switched to a console - blind - and logged in, installed an ssh server and can now ssh in quite happily. The box is definately up and running or i would not have been able to post all the logs as attachments that I have. I know it sounds like hardware failure, but the fact that it started the second I installed nvidia-glx makes me suspicious that either the cards have failed _because_ of something that driver did, _or_ the driver put the cards in some kind of odd state. I have taklen the xorg.conf from my 32-bit install (on the other disk) and have started X with that, and with the option you suggested. I am still not hopeful. Clearly I could get a replacement card, bug if the nvidia driver _is_ to blame for this hardware malfunction, then how can I be sure it wont happen again with another nvidia card? Right now i am sat at work and the box is at home, so I need to wait for my wife to get home before I can ask her to look at the screen and tell me if she sees anything. -- New feisty 64bit install causes nvidia card failure https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/110361 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
Re: [Bug 107188] Re: [MASTER] [kde] Upgrade tool crashed (edgy - feisty)
Hi Robin, I realized after posting my comment you could very well has read that I asked you personally for assistance as opposed to getting the team at the top (Canonical) to post a workaround - but my heartfelt thanks for doing this. Many will benefit from your advice. Although I am new to Linux (6 months), I've delved under the bonnet a lot to see how this motor works - being an old DOS bred guy it's just so great to have an operating system that behaves itself again. Just sudo apt-get remove --purge copy/paste the list of packages here and you should be good to go.
