[Bug 114166] Alternate Install CD looks like it locked up on older systems, but is just slow :)
Public bug reported: I was recently given an old IBM Aptiva (K6-2 @ 500 MHz; 96 MB RAM, shared with video) and tried installing Feisty on it with the alternate install disk. It *seemed* to lock up at the Configuring language-pack- en-base stage, so I did a search and it seems that other people have had this problem, but its not actually locked up, its just a very very very slow step on these older computers and if you leave it alone for a long time (hours in some cases) it finishes just fine and then proceeds (some of the later steps also take a long time too). See http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=208027 for reports by other people of the same behavior. Would it be possible, as a wishlist type bug, to add a little ASCII indicator to the alternate install CD to show that the step is actually being worked on? e.g. like for fsck when it checks the HD, repeating these four characters in the same spot to show a little spinning dial: / | \ - ** Affects: Ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- Alternate Install CD looks like it locked up on older systems, but is just slow :) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/114166 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 114170] Software RAID sometimes fails to assemble arrays on boot
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: initramfs-tools Using Kubuntu Feisty Fawn 7.04, i386, release version. Sometimes Ubuntu fails to bring up non-root md arrays, which causes non-root filesystems to be unmountable and interrupts the init process. /dev/md0, which houses the root file system, is brought up fine. Hardware: Abit AB9 Pro motherboard, uses Intel P965 chipset with ICH8R southbridge. Hard disks connected to the SATA ports offered by the chipset, using AHCI mode. Hard disks are 3 identical 250 GiB Seagate Barracudas, connected to SATA ports 1-3. HDD:s are partitioned as follows (exact fdisk -l output available if necessary): /dev/sdb1 128 MiB 0x83, /boot (ext3) /dev/sdb2 40 GiB 0x07, /media/sdb2 (ntfs, Win XP system partition) /dev/sdb3 210 GiB 0x0f (Win95 Extended (LBA)) /dev/sdb5 512 MiB 0x82 (swap) /dev/sdb6 14 GiB 0xfd (part of RAID5 array /dev/md0) /dev/sdb7 45 GiB 0xfd (part of RAID5 array /dev/md1) /dev/sdb8 45 GiB 0xfd (part of RAID5 array /dev/md2) /dev/sdb9 45 GiB 0xfd (part of RAID5 array /dev/md3) /dev/sdb10 45 GiB 0xfd (part of RAID5 array /dev/md4) /dev/sda and /dev/sdc have identical partition tables, except for the partiton type of partition 2 (W95 LBA on sda, Linux on sdc). And of course, only /dev/sdb1 is mounted as /boot. The raid arrays have been created using Edgy's alternate installer (side note: feisty's installer appears to be buggy, it gives an invalid argument when handling RAID arrays - will write a separate bug report on this). /dev/md0 houses the root filesystem (ext3). /dev/md[1-4] are physical volumes for LVM volume group mainvg, which contains lv's homelv (/home, ext3), varlv (/var, ext3), usrlv (/usr, ext3) and mmedia (/multimedia, xfs). As stated above, the bug occurs during boot. Sometimes arrays md[1-4] fail to assemble (lots of assembling array mdx -- fail! errors). This doesn't yet interrupt the boot process, but now as the LVM vg is missing all its physical volumes, mainvg doesn't come up, homelv, usrlv, varlv and mmedialv are unavailable, fsck notes this as a lot of broken filesystems and drops to root shell. On root shell, cat /proc/mdstat shows only the md0 array, md[1-4] can be brought up using mdadm --assemble. There's a fix detailed in e.g. http://www.meta.net.nz/~daniel/blog/2007/04/12/feisty-fawn-and-software- raid/ - in short, boot passing break=mount as option, add /sbin/udevsettle --timeout 10 as the last line of /usr/share/initramfs- tools/scripts/init-premount/udev and rebuild initrd 'update-initramfs -u -k all'. This fixed the issue. I'm filing this as a separate bug report, since it seems to be the policy that all SATA and/or RAID related bugs should be filed separately, and the (working) fix is different than the ones proposed in bug 103177. ** Affects: initramfs-tools (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- Software RAID sometimes fails to assemble arrays on boot https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/114170 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Re: [Bug 84603] Re: Hard disk I/O randomly freezes when hald is running and optical drive is empty
I can acknowledge that Crossflashing the drive firmware on my Acer Aspire 9410 solved the problem. The drive is still fully functional. ThanX. - Original Message - From: Tomas Siaulys [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, May 11, 2007 12:47:45 AM (GMT+0100) Europe/Berlin Subject: [Bug 84603] Re: Hard disk I/O randomly freezes when hald is running and optical drive is empty Looks like the bug is caused by the buggy cd/dvd drive firmware. I crossflashed my drive and voila - everything works just great. No freezes, no lockups, everything runs just great. You must use SC03 firmware. If anyone wants to try out flashing the drive - I took instructions from another bug report here https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.20/+bug/64587 The only thing I did in other way is that I used dos flasher instead of windows flasher, because windows flasher didn't seem to work for me. Looks like the drive which is poking around is TssTcorp TS-L632D. I presume all of you have it too. Take a look at k3b and you'll find out which model you have. If you decide to flash your drive - be extremely cautious - bad flashing can damage the drive! [Bug 114177] Overheating forces shutdown in Feisty
Public bug reported: On my HP ze4315 I frequently (not always, maybe 90% of boots) have the computer crash out to a default shutdown (always incomplete) after reporting that the system has exceeded a certain critical temperature. This critical temperature is always different, and varies between 36C and 42C, so perfectly normal operating temperatures. When it crashes out, the fan doesn't turn on at any point. y system is dual boot ubuntu/XP and the XP works fine, cooling with the fan when needed and without when not. I have never had temperature related issues with this machine, although it can get warm at times. This problem began after I automatically updated the software using the included update manager, until then I had had no such problems. This all has occurred in the past week. ** Affects: Ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- Overheating forces shutdown in Feisty https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/114177 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 99372] Re: [Feisty] KDE Printing Manager does not list the PPDs of Gutenprint
I too could not install a Canon Pixma (MP150) using the KDE print wizard. I'm running Kubuntu Feisty and have the cupsys-driver-gutenprint package installed but not the foomatic-db-gutenprint. I managed to get the printer set up using the local host suggestion above. The printer is now showing as installed in the KDE printer settings. I had a look at some of the KDE bugs, the closest I could find was 142220 (http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=142220). Does this look like the same problem? I believe KDE 3.5.7 is scheduled for release on 07/05/22, I mention this in case its possible to get a fix in. -- [Feisty] KDE Printing Manager does not list the PPDs of Gutenprint https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/99372 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 114183] network-manager roaming mode not working
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: network-manager Hi; my laptop is an ASUS A6j, my Wireless card is an Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG. I've upgraded from Ubuntu 6.10 to 7.04. In 6.10 everything about networking was ok: my wireless worked very well and the same did wired networking. After the upgrade I found the network-manager set itself up in manual mode. The Gnome sessions entry was also been set to nm-applet -sm-disable. It worked fine until I switched it (by using nm-applet) to Roaming mode, both for wireless and wired interfaces. After that I went in a hell, answering to nm-applet questioning me about my wireless network password. Every time I provided the password the network-manager found itself not capable of connecting to the wireless network (password was ok...). It found the right wireless networks, but it wasn't capable of properly managing them. So I returned to Manual Configuration, but sometimes it simply doesn't work and I can't figure out why. Problems occur more often at startup, or when I change from static IP to DHCP. The other strange thing is that, in such moments of malfunction, protocols like Skype work fine, just the browser and synaptic seem to stop working (yeah, I thinked about DNS, but they only fixed the problem sometimes, not always). For now the working configuration is: 1. nm-applet started as simply nm-applet (no -sm-disable) 2. nm-applet set to Manual configuration (no roaming mode, neither for wired or for wireless interface) 3. DHCP for the wireless 4. static IP for the wired interface 5. But the most shocking one for me is the one with xfburn doesn't burn iso title at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=367411highlight=xfburn+iso . From that thread, its understood that the issue was valid and known even during the Edgy era. People advices each other some other tools! Some chat on IRC #xubuntu gave me the same impression. Seems that almost everybody knows that Xfburn doesn't work in some way and they accept it as if something normal. Just install x, y, z! For me, if the default burner tool of a distro is not working in a similar or same way in two consecutive release, the issue may be related with seriousness in working style in general, apart from having another ordinary single bug. [Bug 60931] Re: Printing only works for PostScript files or CUPS' own test page
I'm afraid there is currently no way to attach this printer to a local parallel port - the systems are at opposite ends of the network and premises, and rather immobile. Suffice it to say that printing does work from Windows (both PostScript and PCL) as well as from other Linux systems (even ancient SuSE 8,2) and also locally on the server - which isn't Windows, of course, but the venerable OS/2 Warp 4. Moreover, the fact that both the CUPS v1.2.x Printer Test Page and error messages when using the PCL 6 driver, as well as occasional badly rendered PostScript jobs (only some borders without text), do print over the network from the freshly installed Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn box, suggest that this is not a network problem (the reported, unresolved issue Samba 3 seems to have with OS/2 according to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/samba/+bug/112839 concerns file sharing). -- Printing only works for PostScript files or CUPS' own test page https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/60931 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 67532 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/67532 I get the same error message reported in the first post to this bug when starting gnome-volume-manager-gthumb on feisty: process 5227: arguments to dbus_message_new_method_call() were incorrect, assertion _dbus_check_is_valid_path (path) failed in file dbus-message.c line 1074. This is normally a bug in some application using the D-Bus library. libhal.c 1058 : Couldn't allocate D-BUS message error: libhal_device_get_property_type: (null): (null) The message reported by the dialog is different though. It says PTP Protocol error, data expected I tried adding the product id to libphoto.rules, but this doesn't fix the problem for me. The camera is a Casio EX-Z750 (07cf:103b) and worked fine with Dapper. [Bug 114179] Re: Error establishing an encrypted connection
Thanks for your bug report Can you establish an encrypted connection with another browser or is it limited to firefox ? from http://groups.google.com/group/mozilla.support.firefox/browse_thread/thread/5c03de873113d39b : error code -12194 indicates that the server to which you connected send you an SSL Access Denied error alert. Normally that message is only sent by SSL servers that request your client to authenticate itself with a certificate, and then reject that certificate. That error alert means Peer received a valid certificate, but access was denied. But you report that you're seeing it on all https servers, and the vast majority of SSL servers never request client authentication. So, I think the most likely explanation is that you've got some proxy server or proxy software that is intentionally interfering with all your https connections. There are so-called firewall products out there, and so called anonymous browsing products, and so-called advertising blockers that intentionally block all https traffic because they can't snoop on it and so they think they're protecting your security by disallowing all connections on which they cannot snoop. In my opinion, all such software should be completely expunged from your system.. So, check and see if your browser has become configured to use a proxy, and if so, try disabling that. Second, if you're using some third party firewall product, or some so-called anonymous browsing software, try disabling that and see if the problem goes away. (I predict it will.) If it does, you know what software is REALLY at fault. ** Changed in: firefox (Ubuntu) Status: Unconfirmed = Needs Info -- Error establishing an encrypted connection https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/114179 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
