It appears to me that I can't hit the next button in the VPN dialog
with a connection name that already exists. This could be a problem in
the old version, so I've added a note to

[Bug 106217] Re: hidden file controlling NVIDIA driver does not get removed when switching from nvidia-glx-new back to nvidia-glx causing X not to start due to mismatch of versions

2007-06-04 Thread Ludi Maciel
It so happens that this file existed (it was still there!) even
though I had already removed the package nvidia-glx-new that had been
installed at first.
I deleted this file and now the driver version 9631 works and I
believe that installing the deb package for nvidia-glx would work too.

Thanks Capineiro. Your fix did the trick here.

[Bug 118602] Unable to effect alsamixer -c 0 changes when pulseaudio is active

2007-06-04 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

When the pulseaudio daemon is active (as enabled by pulseaudio-esound-
compat and System-Preferences-Sound-Software-mixing), I am unable to
alter the output sound volume with any control in alsamixer -c 0 (PCM,
CD, Mic, PC Beep). No matter what any of these controls are set to, the
output volume is always 100%, although the Master mute toggle does
mute/unmute the sound.

On an ASUS F3Jm, as in IRC discussion with crimsun in #ubuntu+1 (2007/06/04):

crimsun pA will only lock the primary PCM element.
...
crimsun: ok, so you've got one primary mixer control for output, which explains
the lock
crimsun: unfortunately this means there's no free control for pA by default

Darn. Thanks for persisting with this. What is the result of
sudo modprobe --ignore-install nvidia_new
? Can you do attach the full log of
sudo strace -f modprobe --ignore-install nvidia_new
? Can you then also include the output of

dmesg | tail -20
after running those commands?

(You did do the reboot during the last set of instructions didn't you?)

[Bug 112925] Re: eclipse crash, when spawning browser

2007-06-04 Thread Paul Wagland
Just to add a new data point here. I was also having this problem, and I
had the following JDKs installed:

ii sun-java5-jdk 1.5.0-11-1ubuntu2
Sun Java(TM) Development Kit (JDK) 5.0
ii sun-java6-jdk 6-00-2ubuntu2
Sun Java(TM) Development Kit (JDK) 6

Originally, I was using Java6 as my default, but, based on some people
seeing the problem and some not, then I did:

sudo update-java-alternatives -s java-1.5.0-sun

And eclipse no longer crashes, for me at least. Could anyone else who is having
this problem also try this? That way at least we can work out where the problem
is. But it appears to me that it is an interaction between Java 6 and Firefox
that causes the issue.

/md0/data /data nonerw,exec,rbind
/md0/s /s nonerw,exec,rbind

Maybe somehow the install is going to /md0 but something is looking for
the nvidia driver before the mount? That doesn't really make sense to me
since normally I can change the driver, modprobe the driver and restart
X and everything is fine.

Re: [Bug 117314] Re: latest kernel(2.6.20-16.28) update gives boot problems

2007-06-04 Thread Martin Pitt
Hi, Sitsofe Wheeler [2007-06-01 16:44 -]:
Martin: Since it looks like we are headed for another change I think
the word has to be put out to those who have gone and relabelled
their /etc/fstab with the /dev/h??? syntax that we are now going
back the other way. The folks over in bugs like Bug #94119 need to
be warned that their CD drives are going to go back to being broken.
Perhaps people need to be told what grub /module options can be
added to diable ata_piix. People need to be warned not to upgrade to
-16. People need to prepare for another round people having binary
 driver breakage

Right, all of this needs to happen in the USN. The USNs already
explain the ABI change consequences.

Does the update go out as -security given that it's not fixing a
security problem any more? What does -security mean?

Yes, it needs to go to -security, since it was broken in -security.
The problem was that -security was abused to introduce changes which
were not security related, so we cannot just let them stay there.

Also what happens to the current renaming bugs? Are they just closed? Do
we just open a new bug if/when another great renaming happens? Is it
worth trying to fix the PATA bugs being masked on SATA machines? Do we
 just close those bugs too?

I leave that to the kernel folks.

[Bug 118605] Feisty freezes upon Logout or Switch user

2007-06-04 Thread Matej Vitasek
Public bug reported:

Using Feisty, Gnome and GDM:

1) log in as any user
2) Log out or Switch user on the Quit screen

The screen goes black, Ctrl+Alt+Backspace does not work, nor does the
Ctrl+Alt+F1-12. Interestingly, Numlock LED is still responsive. The only
way out is hard reboot.

I looked for the solution on forums. One advice was to turn on Restart
the X server with each login, however, it did not help.

I am not aware of any non-default configuration, I can supply my gdm
.conf-custom if needed.

[Bug 88355] ekiga hangs on start-up

2007-06-04 Thread agostinomaurotto
Hello
the error i get is this:
ekiga: error while loading shared libraries: libpt.so.1.10.3: cannot open
shared object file: No such file or directory
when using the ekiga 2.0.3 from ubuntu repo, when using the 2.0.9 packaged
on ekiga website it doesn't give any error message, just hangs there.
I tried to reinstall all the libpt packages but this didn't solve the
problem
i currently use XFS filesystem, and i am far from home, when i go back i
will format on ext3 and stick with that, i don't want those problems to be
caused by xfs.

but i don't have accessibility enabled at all.
Thanks
Agostino

Hi

Could you tell me

 - What version of network-manager you have installed
 - Which version of Ubuntu you are running (Feisty? Edgy? Dapper?)
 - Could you also say which wireless and wired network cards you have.

If could you attach the output of the lspci command:

  lspci -v lspci.txt

Then attach lspci.txt here.

Cheers

[Bug 116593] Re: Kmail filters are broken with IMAP

2007-06-04 Thread mmezo
I wanted to link the upstream bug, but it seems launchpad is broken at
the moment:

There is one bug directly related to this one that has been closed as a
duplicate of another. In it it clearly states that 3.5.6 worked and 3.5.7
doesn't (which I think is this and also my case).
http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=145819

The more general one (that predates to kde 3.5.2 at least) and states that imap
filters sometimes work and sometimes don't:

[Bug 39145] Re: Request to update Greek dictionary

2007-06-04 Thread Nick Demou
Updating the deb must be *very* easy for someone doing debian packaging
frequently (besides the technicalities of debian versioning/packaging the only
thing necessary is to replace 2 text files with the updated ones and write a
couple of lines in the readme).
We can safely guess that Nick Niktaris is overwhelmed by other duties (real
life is hard for every one of us). Is there any other debian packager
available (I can provide detailed info about what needs be done and I can
promise that the details wont be more than 50 words :-)

[Bug 118612] installer installs grub to hda when using guided partitioning for sda

2007-06-04 Thread webograph
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: partman

steps to reproduce:
- have a setup with one hd with only windows installed (let's call it hda)
- have a usb stick on which you want to install ubuntu (let's call it sda)
- boot from live cd, install, choose automatic partitioning of sda (geführte
partitionierung in german)
- reboot with usb stick unplugged
- grub will want to load a stage2, of course unable to do so

solution:
grub should not be installed on partitions not selected

reason:
users rely on the installer not to touch disks it is not explicitly told to
touch and get very nervous when the system they rely on (for many people just
switching to ubuntu, this is still windows) does not work any more after
installing linux

workaround for windows not booting:
fdisk /dev/hda
set hda1 (the windows partition) as bootable

There are a couple of issues, anyway: When I don't use cube rotation, windows
disappear from desktop switcher applet, so it is only by guess that i can
switch to the right desktop in case of many application opened, because the
applet shows correctly the windows only on active desktop.

The second issue is: when using the plain old desktop switcher (no cube)
one can move windows between the desktop using the right-click menu, and
this is the correct behaviour. When using cube, these menu options are
missing and it is not so obvious how to move a window to another
desktop. This is anyway stated in another bug (i don't remember exactly
which one).

[Bug 94119] Re: CDROM drive no longer working, unable to mount.

2007-06-04 Thread Jack Jowett
I have the same symptoms as everyone else. The CD device isn't recognized.
Looking at properties, the location, size owner are unknown. Access is read
only. Volume file system is udf not mounted. I can't change these reading and
if I could, not sure it would help.
I have looked at bug reports #62896, 66254, 44233, 6415 plus comments at
Ubuntu Form-Absolute beginners talk and since going to Feisty, the ablity to
burn a CD DVD isn't available.
This problem has been in existence for a period of time and hopefully it will
be correct shortly.

Burning a CD:
Prior to my installation of Ubuntu 7.04 (Feisty Fawn ) a month ago, both
devices worked with Windows (don't want to use) and Fedora 6 (problems).
When I try to burn a CD with C/D / DVD creator, the following messages
appeared:
(1) Reload a rewritable or blank disk (it can read size of file) and (2)
writing files to disk.
When I right click on CD-RW/DVD RW Drive:
This message appears: Cannot mount volume. Invalid mount option when
attempting to mount the volume 'UDF Volume'.
Doesn't work with Keb either.

[Bug 118608] Re: Please merge inventor (universe) from Debian Unstable (main)

2007-06-04 Thread Emmet Hikory
Thank you for the debdiff. The application of this to the Debian
package does not build for me (AMD64). The errors are related to
undefined GL symbols in MyTextureEd.c++:, perhaps due to issues
including GL/GLwMDrawA.h. Please review, and submit a new debdiff when
complete. I have unsubscribed Ubuntu-Universe-Sponsors whilst this work
is underway. Pleae resubscribe when it is complete.

[Bug 118613] /etc/init.d/networking does not respect hwaddress

2007-06-04 Thread Mike Brown
Public bug reported:

/etc/network/interfaces (see interfaces(5)) allows for setting hwaddress
on ethernet adapters. This is needed by users whose ISPs restrict
handing out DHCP leases to a fixed MAC address. In earlier releases
this worked fine. Here is an example interfaces:

auto eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp
hwaddress ether 0cdb128acfe5

However on feisty this is completely ignored by /etc/init.d/networking.
Further complicating matters is that it seems we have yet another file that
stores static networking information (/etc/iftab) which also wants to store MAC
addresses. Anytime you store the same information in multiple places you're
asking for trouble. Please consolidate /etc/iftab and /etc/network/interfaces
and also make sure users can set MAC addresses on boot via this file.

A workaround is to do this by hand i.e.:

ifconfig down eth0 hw ether 0c:db:12:8a:cf:e5
ifconfig up eth0
dhclient
