[Bug 148686] Re: screen blinks a lot during boot

2007-10-08 Thread tim_o
I have noticed an extra blink during X startup on my intel mobile
chipset (965 gm). A little bit of searching turned up this post on the
xorg mail list:
http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/xorg/2007-July/026533.html . It
indicates that the extra blinking is due to the detection mechanism in
the new intel driver, and that this may be improved in the future.

If this problem is not happening in Feisty or in upgrades from Feisty to
Gutsy, perhaps it is because these installations are still using the
i810 driver.

[Bug 130511] Re: Gusty updates broke my wireless connectivity

2007-10-08 Thread ddumanis
Same problem here--wireless on my Dell Latitude D600 was working great
with my BCM4309 (via the firmware cutter) in Feisty--now broken in Gutsy
when using the restricted driver manager's autoinstaller of BCM43xx-
fwcutter and automatic firmware extractor. No wireless networks show up
in network-manager.

I upgraded from Feisty and do NOT want to do a fresh install.
Ideas/solutions welcome--I'm clearly not the only one with this problem!

P.S. when I slide a NetGear (atheros) PC card into the PC card slot, all
wireless networks show up normally in network-manager, so this is
definitely a problem with the BCM4309 card.

[Bug 150457] SCIM entry hangs oowriter on main display, not switch user display

2007-10-08 Thread Dave M.
Public bug reported:

On a 6.06LTS system with all updates, a Japanese user recently developed
trouble entering Japanese text with SCIM into oowriter. The symptom is
that oowriter hangs after SCIM input converts a Kanji and the user types
enter to accept the conversion. The characters are never un-hilighted
and oowriter is unresponsive (does not repaint after exposes, but also
does not use any CPU time). SCIM input into other programs still works
OK.

An unusual twist: if the user logs in over another session using Switch
User, then SCIM and oowriter work OK. (IOW, if DISPLAY=:20.0, SCIM
works.)

[Bug 138924] Re: New 'Documents', 'Pictures', etc. folders ignore current folders of the same/similar name

2007-10-08 Thread Darryl Clarke
I agree the script that creates these directories should do some sort of
check.

I have 'documents', 'downloads', 'pictures' etc. and upon first login
after the update, it created all the same with the same, but uppercase
first letter.

for established users who are just upgrading, the extra new directories
are messy and can be quite confusing if they have already chosen to use
other names.

Well, the behavior of actually freezing the system occurs as a 2nd bug,
after everything's up and running. I think Bryce is probably referring
the installation bug to the overall xserver-xorg-video-intel bug
problem set, esp. since that also occurs. He's probably just pulling a
whole series of similar behaviors into one spot, since they're all
related to the same package/chipset problem.

[Bug 150461] smarty-gettext installs plugins to the wrong location

2007-10-08 Thread Tomasz Grzegurzko
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: smarty-gettext

Smarty installs its plugins to /usr/share/php/smarty/plugins, but the
smarty-gettext package installs plugins to
/usr/share/php/smarty/libs/plugins, so including the top level
Smarty.class.php makes it unable to find the additional plugins without
a symlink or extra hacks. I believe the problem is with the smarty-
gettext package which needs its install location updated to
/usr/share/php/smarty/plugins (or smarty could install back to the
original location, either way).

[Bug 150460] Login fails, failsafe login fails, gconf doesn't start

2007-10-08 Thread Lars Wirzenius
Public bug reported:

Yesterday evening I let update-manager update gutsy. I hadn't done that
for a couple of days, since it was the weekend and I didn't feel like
battling with any problems an update might cause. The updating took a
couple of iterations (I assume new updates arrived while the first one
took place, or something like that), and at the end there was a please
reboot icon in the panel. I didn't reboot, I just shut down. It was
late and I wanted to sleep.

This morning, I turned on the laptop again, it booted fine, and I logged
in. First problem: it played a login sound, but I'm pretty sure I had
disabled that before. That's easy to fix, but then there was a second
problem: the desktop background picture was shown, but nothing else: no
panels, no desktop icons. I waited maybe a minute or two. Caps Lock did
toggle the LED.

I checked things via the text mode virtual console, all the apps (gnome-
panel, nautilus, metacity) were running.

I killed X with ctrl-alt-backspace, and logged back in. This time, same
situation except there was alo no sound, and no desktop background.
Rebooted, same thing (first login sound+background, second not). Tried
the failsafe GNOME session, still the same.

Rebooted. Created a temporary account. Same behavior as before, except
on the third or so try, it eventually came up with the panel and desktop
icons. It took perhaps two minutes (guessing, didn't actually time it
with a watch, since I was starting at the screen and trying to think
what the problem might be).

Logged out, logged in with my own account. Now it worked. Rebooted.
Logged in as myself again, and it complained that it couldn't start the
GNOME settings service (gconfd, I assume), but that it would be started
again on the next login. Logged out, and back in, and now it did work.
Am writing this bug report from within that login session.

activating /apps/nautilus/desktop/volumes_visible in gconf-editor makes

[Bug 150060] Re: Gnome Panel Doesn't Look Right

2007-10-08 Thread Gert Kulyk
For me (I'm not sure, if Tyler would agree), it is the panel looking
different (that is the part right of the arrow drawn by Tyler on the
screenshot). While i assume the 1 px line is theme-specific (a shadow-
like effect or something like this), it vanishes sometimes. I can
reproduce this by changing from clearlooks (has the 1px shadow) to
glider (flat panel) and back again (you need to open menu and config-
dialogs on the right places, otherwise the panel will be only partly
shaded).

[Bug 150466] Impossible to choose keyboard settings

2007-10-08 Thread François Tissandier
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: displayconfig-gtk

Gutsy on a Dell M1330

When displayconfig is running in failsafe mode, it's not possible to
choose the keyboard settings, and once you have chose the driver, it's
rebooting with the wrong keyboard settings in GDM (qwerty keyboard
instead of azerty). It can be extremely disturbing for the user unless
he perfectly knows the qwerty layout.

[Bug 150443] Re: Compiz in Gutsy Beta: No workspace switching with mousewheel

2007-10-08 Thread Danny Baumann
The workspace switcher applet of the gnome-panel (gnome-
panel/applet/wncklet/workspace-switcher.c, function applet_scroll)
should use the viewport functions instead of the workspace functions
when Compiz is used. As it already has support for Compiz, this has
obviously just slipped through.

BTW, Metacity forces you to use keyboard shortcuts to move windows to other
workspaces - why would anyone consider such an incomplete window manager by
default?
(You see, it's just a matter of perspective.)

[Bug 115283] Re: random system freeze when desktop-effects activated

2007-10-08 Thread jmspeex
I just installed Gusty and I'm also experiencing exactly the same
problem as MichaelElkins described above, but on a Dell D810 (with
radeon card too). Ctrl-Alt-BackSpace doesn't work for me either, but
Alt-SysRq-b does work. It happens so often that there's no way to do
any work with that enabled (why is it on by default I don't know), so I
turned it off. I tried using the proprietary ATI driver to see if it has
the same problem, but then I would just get a message saying the
composite extension isn't available. Conclusion, desktop effects not
usable on this laptop in any way.

[Bug 148744] Re: encfs is not working on gutsy

2007-10-08 Thread getaceres
I've been using it for some days and it behaves in a very strange way. When I
copy files into the encrypted directory and then I unmount it, that files
dissapear from the normal view but when I mount the filesystem again half of
the previously copied files are not readable. Also, as I'm mounting a user home
directory, some applications I start try to read the recently used files and
they get strange names (I think that they read the encrypted name, which should
not happen) and also some of the previously copied files have dissappeared.
I don't know why it happens. I have tried creating a new user and a new
directory and I get the same behavor while in Feisty it was working perfectly.

[Bug 133139] Re: update-manager bug when loading Changes is slow

2007-10-08 Thread Michael Nelson
I've been looking at this bug a little bit, and need a bit of
feedback... if any mentors have time :)

The problem is pretty straight forward, but the solution isn't (to me
anyway!). As noted above, the problem is that the two calls to
on_treeview_update_cursor_changed get stacked (rather than using
callbacks), the second (more recent) call has to finish before the first
call gets to check whether it's own lock has been released (a separate
lock is created each time the function is called). Once the second call
completes, the first call then gets a chance to check it's lock, finds
it released and updates the UI, leaving the UI in an inconsistent state
(change log displayed for previously selected item rather than current.)

Now as far as I can tell, the locks aren't being used for any thread-
related concurrency issues (as I said, a separate lock is created for
each new thread), but rather to wait until the thread finishes so that
the calling process can update the UI.

So, the two solutions that I can see are:

1) Pass a callback function to the newly created thread and allow the
creating process to finish (rather than waiting for the lock to be
released). When the callback is called (with the package name as
parameter), it checks to ensure that the package name being updated is
actually the most recently requested package before it updates the UI.
Eg:

def cache_updated_callback(package_name):
if package_name == self.last_requested_package_name:
# Update UI

This no longer requires the locks (unless I missed something!) but does
require a new attribute (last_requested_package_name - could be wrapped
up in a new changes_log object that manages its own states?) to ensure
that the UI is only ever updated with the most recently requested
package change log. Also means that cancelled requests can still update
the cache with their data, even though they're not yet used in the UI
(handy if user then clicks back on previously selected package).

On the downside, I'm guessing (from some of the comments in the code)
the reason a callback wasn't used in the first place is because it
leaves the newly created thread updating the UI, rather than the main
process. But i don't think it would be difficult to do this in a thread-
safe way as outlined above?

2) A second solution could be to continue using the locks/wait, but
assign the lock to an attribute so that it can be used to cancel any
previous requests. That is, whenever the function wants to create a new
thread, it checks to see if there has been any previous requests (ie.
there is a lock), and if so, releases the previous lock so the previous
request-thread will not update the cache (seems a bit inefficient, as
the cache may as well be updated, even if the data isn't used *yet*, but
that's the way the code is atm), then creates and assigns a new lock to
the class attribute, continuing on.

That way, when the second request completes, the UI is updated (and the
call is popped off the stack). The first request will then check it's
lock, find it released, query the cache but find the cache doesn't
contain it's required value and so skip updating the UI (as in the
current implementation).

Let me know which solution is preferable (I'm for (1) - the only reason I
haven't just gone and coded it is a comment in get_changelog:
# don't touch the gui in this function, it needs to be thread-safe
as calling the callback would mean that this function *is* updating the gui.
I'm guessing the comment comes with more experience than I've got myself :-) )

Thanks for any help!
-Michael.

[Bug 129029] Re: [Gutsy Tribe-5] No Sound on Login Screen or during Login

2007-10-08 Thread FredBezies
Logout sound doesn't work. At least, login sound works, but both will be
great. Any workaround besides using gdm-setup ?!

Just to confirm above posters comments, this is the same bug, its
happening in every major distro, try search on this chip on other distro
forums (suse, gentoo, etc) loads of people are struggling with this, but
it seems nothing being done... only weird work arounds and people
telling you to boot up wihout power, then hibernate, re-login and never
use windows again. I think its silly to just blame it on windows

It's not windows related at all. suspend-to-disk, restart and you have
no sound. suspend-to-ram and then restart, sound is back.

booting, surely something in alsa/kernel has changed causing this. Guess
we're eighter stuck running ubuntu 6.x or *BSD.
