[Bug 121487] Re: Gnome-PPP will not dock or minimize
OK, it's nice that we use this trivial bug of gnome-ppp for discussions on how to handle dial-up connections in the future. However, please keep your hats on. This is a trivial bug, which appears to the user a regression of gusty compared to feisty and we have a trivial fix for it. So, I'd suggest, that a release manager steps up and tells us, whether we will see this bug fixed in the near future or not. In the latter case he might give us some reason, why this bug will not be fixed. [Bug 159436] [gutsy] xfce weather applet is not entirely translated into Polish
Public bug reported: There are numerous errors in Polish translation of the weather applet that comes with Xubuntu. Some things are not translated at all, and some translations are wrong. For example 'set' (in the meaning of sun set) is translated into 'Ustaw (which is translation for 'set' in the meaning of 'set something to something'). Re: [Bug 17216] Re: Hard drive spindown should be configurable
Mark Thomas wrote: To Bart Samwel: If the laptop is idling, with no apps doing anything that requires the disk, then I expect the disk to park, then spin down and stay spun down. You are correct that dirty pages will get flushed out within 30s, but the point is that if the user is not doing anything (or is doing something irrelevant to the hard disk like watching a DVD, or reading a cached [clean] document) then there should be no dirty pages to be flushed. These are both of the use cases in https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/power-management-in-ubuntu This works in linux now as long as you don't have things being written - you can try it out by rebooting to single user mode so no processes other than sh are running. ACPID on certain laptops was an extreme example, as it was logging at a particularly high rate, but there are other daemons and applications that needlessly read from or write to the hard disk. Thunderbird, for example, should be using inotify, not polling the mail file (I assume that's what it's doing). Unfortunately, there are many cases where the accesses are desired, unavoidable behaviour. For instance, I have Thunderbird set to retrieve mail from imap as it arrives. I get a new e-mail about every minute. So here's at least one user for which this will never work. If, at some point, Ubuntu will assume that no apps access the disk unnecessarily (because they changed them to work like that), and then enables power management to the drive using that assumption, it will start destroying my hard drive yet again because of the way I use the laptop. Avoiding disk I/O in the default install, while a noble thing to do, can _never_ be used to justify enabling aggressive power management on drives by default. We should find these daemons and applications (at least the ones in the standard ubuntu install) and fix them so they don't access the disk unnecessarily. Starter for ten: ACPID. I vote for enabling noatime first. :-) -- Hard drive spindown should be configurable https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/17216 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I have had a similar problem during a Feisty to Gutsy upgrade using apt- cacher as proxy (see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/update- manager/+bug/113658 ), but it's a generic proxy problem. If Canonical are serious about the corporate market, where proxy servers are very common, they need to fix this sort of bug... [Bug 34144] Re: sis 760 AGP broken on amd64
I had a chance to experiment with things some, and I think I made a little progress. I was doing this on a Gentoo system with a 2.6.22 kernel compiled from gentoo-sources, but I don't think that makes a difference. Although this is amd64 hardware, I'm using an x86 kernel/OS. As I mentioned in the a href=https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=8840freedesktop bug/a, it seems to me that incorrect identification of the AGP aperture size as 4M no matter what the BIOS setting is related to the SIS 760 device IDs in the sis-agp module of the kernel. If that is the case, then it should be possible to comment out the device IDs and recompile the module in order to see how the aperture size is identified. I had tried to do this before and apparently made some mistakes, but this time I did things correctly. Because, when I booted using the modified sis-agp module, I saw the following in the syslog: Oct 31 10:00:31 menagerie agpgart: Detected AGP bridge 0 Oct 31 10:00:31 menagerie agpgart: AGP aperture is 128M @ 0xf000 Compare this with the unaltered kernel module: [ 102.351910] agpgart: Detected SiS 760 chipset [ 102.352228] agpgart: AGP aperture is 4M @ 0xf000 128M is the BIOS setting. I've attached a patch to show what I changed in the sis-agp module to get the above result. Unfortunately, however, using this altered module did not solve the APIC error problem. That is, with the altered sis-agp module and amd64-agp loaded, the AGP aperture size was identified correctly during boot, DRI was enabled, but the stream of APIC errors began once the drm module was loaded. So it's not really a patch that solves things for me, just some more information that I thought might be useful. @Neil Wilson, I'm using the most recent beta BIOS for my motherboard (asus k8s-mx). I've upgraded the BIOS twice since opening this bug, with no effect on the problem. Regarding the noapic boot option, I've used that too but found it a problematic workaround. For me, it leads to IRQ problems such as: Oct 31 06:04:20 menagerie irq 7: nobody cared (try booting with the irqpoll option) Oct 31 06:04:20 menagerie [c0148be4] __report_bad_irq+0x24/0x80 Oct 31 06:04:20 menagerie [c0148e91] note_interrupt+0x251/0x280 Oct 31 06:04:20 menagerie [c0148115] handle_IRQ_event+0x25/0x50 Oct 31 06:04:20 menagerie [c014987d] handle_level_irq+0xcd/0x110 Oct 31 06:04:20 menagerie [c010672e] do_IRQ+0x3e/0x80 Oct 31 06:04:20 menagerie [c010498f] common_interrupt+0x23/0x28 Oct 31 06:04:20 menagerie [c0102b3a] default_idle+0x2a/0x40 Oct 31 06:04:20 menagerie [c01023e3] cpu_idle+0x43/0x80 Oct 31 06:04:20 menagerie [c0462b2f] start_kernel+0x21f/0x2b0 Oct 31 06:04:20 menagerie [c0462450] unknown_bootoption+0x0/0x260 Oct 31 06:04:20 menagerie === Oct 31 06:04:20 menagerie handlers: Oct 31 06:04:20 menagerie [c02ddf50] (usb_hcd_irq+0x0/0x60) Oct 31 06:04:20 menagerie Disabling IRQ #7 And that is accompanied by the whole system freezing. Again, this is only when using noapic at boot. The mother board I'm using is kind of strange because it has both an AGP slot and a PCI Express slot (1x), maybe that's part of the issue. I don't have anything plugged into the PCIe slot, though. In any case, I believe that my experiment with the device IDs suggests that the issue is with the kernel module. And I notice that the AGP kernel maintainer, Dave Airlie, has already responded to this bug, so... In any case, there is now some evidence that there is a regression here as far as the SIS AGP driver is concerned and that it is not a matter of BIOS setting or updates. Thanks. ** Attachment added: sis-agp module minus the SIS 760 device ID info http://launchpadlibrarian.net/10250120/sis-agp.c.patch -- sis 760 AGP broken on amd64 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/34144 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 159454] Re: Using multimedia buttons in Rhythmbox 0.11.2 freezes it.
I don't know if I am going to do that because I switched to a better program - Miro ;-) Miro has one advantage over Rhythmbox - it can resume playback of a media file from the point where it was stopped. But email me when you correct all the bugs, especially https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/rhythmbox/+bug/148646, and implement this feature so maybe I will switch back to Rhythmbox. -- Using multimedia buttons in Rhythmbox 0.11.2 freezes it. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/159454 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 49508] Re: init script does not create requirred /var/run/sympa directory
I'm currently running Gutsy IA32 on a machine that got a clean Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty install, then Kubuntu desktop installed on top, then upgraded to Gutsy using Kubuntu's adept_manager (plus finished by hand as the thing fails finishing the upgrade by itself). My /var/run in such mounted : varrun on /var/run type tmpfs (rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev,mode=0755) ...after boot, although it is not specifically mentioned in fstab, but the result of /etc/init.d/mountkernfs.sh Being tempfs in RAM, it's obviously empty once mounted after boot. Package sympa-5.2.4-1.1ubuntu1 creates at install time a /var/run/sympa directory that thus, will be removed (forgotten) at next machine reboot. The /etc/init.d/sympa script needs this /var/run/sympa directory to exist (and doesn't create it) for putting sympa PIDfiles into it, if the directory doesn't exist sympa dies. The easy fix if just to add the line : [ -d /var/run/sympa ] || { mkdir /var/run/sympa; chown sympa: /var/run/sympa; } In /etc/init.d/sympa . I personally put it just after the parameters and functions declarations, and then it works. I hope this bug report is now complete and clear enough not to be invalid-ated again... I would insist that several other daemons that need their /var/run/sympa directory to exist suffer from the exact same problem (among which dspam, bug report already submitted), so the issue is general and not sympa-only, but I believe the easier fix is to fix every initscript that needs such /var/run/somedaemon directories to exist, unless there is a config file somewhere that would be supposed to create all the bunch of dirs at each boot ? Thanks for your help. -- init script does not create requirred /var/run/sympa directory https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/49508 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 130444] Re: Characters incorrectly echoed to virtual terminal screens
UPDATE Another possible clue? -- Context is Ubuntu Feisty Fawn. This was discovered accidentally. When the grub boot starts, just after the Ubuntu logo appears on the screen but before the sign-in box comes up, I do ctrl-alt-F1 and switch to TTY display (with all the messages that are usually hidden at boot time). After a few seconds the normal character set changes to a slightly uglier one -- looking like something circa 1980 -- and a little while later the display returns by itself to gui mode and I can sign in as usual, as if I had never left the gui terminal. Now I return to a TTY virtual terminal with the slightly primitive character set, and lo! *all the accents appear in their proper places*. There are a few minor discrepancies, the only major one being that é appears as £, but believe me I am much, much happier with the new arrangement; and Midnight Commander now shows up with proper borders. If I write a file in TTY and then read it in gui, the £ will show as é. Three more points: (1) all virtual terminals are affected the same way; (2) the caps lock now works; (3) the output of stty -a is the same with this new arrangement as it was with the standard arrangement. I must add I am somewhat disconcerted that the importance of this bug has not yet been determined. Even if VTs are used only for writing code, there are some people who might occasionally write comments in languages other than English (a peculiar Indo-European dialect which tries to dispense with accents). Also any display that requires borders, such as Midnight Commander, looked terrible on the standard VT arrangement; with my accidentally found fix I can now enjoy it in its former beauty. -- Characters incorrectly echoed to virtual terminal screens https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/130444 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
